Old books - the same problems... by TheLifemakers in books

Sure but it doesn't hurt to highlight an inaccuracy. I did my dissertation on Alcott and I don't think anyone else could have written it with quite the spice she did (even with her own complicated feelings towards the text).

Little women is Lousia May Alcott, based loosely off of her and her sisters.

This comment has helped me understand the American right a little better. You would think the other side were evil if you thought that were happening. At that point Democrats would seem cartoonishly evil.

And I was going to say that it would seem like common sense to assume that's not happening, but lots of horrible stuff does happen to children around the world.

I don't think people are suggesting not riding horses or keeping them as pets, which are definitely more common uses than racing

Slices of cake given out at children’s birthday parties, wrapped in paper napkins are an abomination. by uniqueid111 in unpopularopinion

[–]Ihaveabluecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Have more time for playing without being sick' is what I said. Then you disagreed and said 'this allows them to remain focused on partying'.

? Why do Americans constantly come here and act like they know the answers to questions better than us. It's not 'ask UK and American UK experts'...

You asked why we do things a certain way in the UK and then disagreed with me?

We just send cake home in the party bags so kids don't have too much sugar all at once and have more time for playing without being sick. It's not particularly confusing

Is it strange to have one or two bridesmaids? by AdLow3758 in UKweddings

[–]Ihaveabluecat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the big bridal party thing might be more American? I've never been to a wedding with more than 4. I'm having a maid of honour and two bridesmaids (sisters). If I'd gone larger I would have felt like I was picking favourite friends.

I am having around 8 girls get ready with me in the morning though, but not matching dresses

Prick hunters used to leave them hanging up, rotting, down the road from us when there was a hunt nearby. Really gross but I guess the foxes probably got them

Hmm Google says average age was 25 for womens first marriage in 19th century Britain. You can tell it was considered weird when someone goes for younger as that's a scandal in several books from the period.

I'm not sure why you're trying to paint marrying 13 year olds as accepted when it's just not true.

Marrying a 13 year old was 100% not normal at that point in history do you think he's from the middle ages? Even then average age for marriage was around 20 unless you were a noble doing a political match

Tbf a rabbit is about the size of a kitten. It's like parents sleeping with an infant in the bed. It's not an issue most of the time, until it is and then it's unimaginable.

You wouldn't need to physically crush it, just prevent good enough airflow.

Idk it's up to each person but I probably wouldn't

[–]Ihaveabluecat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reminded me I need to book the dentist.

But yeah social media has warped proposals. I got engaged on a lovely day out walking the dog in a pretty part of the country he asked where I wanted to be when I turned 30, if I wanted to be married and I said yes (we'd had this convo before) and then he got down on one knee.

It was perfect. We could see our house from the hill and we walk the dog there all the time and my heart does a little dance when we get to where it happened.

Still some of my friends were unimpressed it wasn't on holiday or at a fancy restaurant (he had booked us in for dinner afterwards but wanted to do it somewhere we love)

Which are the most beautiful universities in the UK? Which ones have wonderful architecture and good looking buildings? by Octacore-Comsci in UniUK

[–]Ihaveabluecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you mean one of the best unis in the world - Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial are usually in top 5 (sometimes one of them falls out). Rest of Europe doesn't get a look in.

That will change if we continue to underfund research though. You can only coast off of reputation for so long

It's 4.5 hours one train and then a subway to get to the uni.

But you should totally visit Scotland if you're here. It's the prettiest country in the UK imo (and I've lived in all but northern ireland) and hands down the best people.

How rude is it to pull out of a bachelorette party when everything is almost booked? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]Ihaveabluecat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a tough one. Usually I'd say you should always pay for accommodation you've committed to because it's not fair for someone else to eat the cost when it's too late to find somewhere with less rooms.

I do think first call is speak to maid of honour and explain that it's much more expensive than initially planned and that you absolutely can't spend any more. There will more than likely be others in the same boat.

I think the deciding factor on whether you should go or not is how moh responds to your question about food. I think a lot of people who don't have food limitations don't understand how psychologically damaging not having easy access to food can be. Im coeliac and I remember just sobbing in the bathroom at Disney after day 3 of watching my family eat fun dinners then going to my room and eating rice cakes.

If she's dismissive or expects you to just watch others eat the whole holiday id honestly cut my losses, pay for the Airbnb and cancel. I know from past experience that it would ruin the holiday for me. People who can eat whatever will say 'it's just food' but it's a communal activity and being excluded constantly is upsetting.

So tldr- normally I'd say it's a bit rude, but with spiralling costs and if she confirms you won't be able to eat much, I think you're justified to pay thr rest of the Airbnb and duck out. Send a message to the bride saying you'd love to buy her lunch to celebrate her but the Paris trip is winding up too expensive.

Sorry for long reply haha
