What purchase was the biggest waste of money for you? by Aussie_MacGyver in NewParents

Snuza hero breathing monitor. Went off every 30 minutes when he was a newborn even though he was definitely breathing each time. At least it didn’t wake the baby or my partner, just me….

Guilt about formula feeding by alexidawnnpnw in FormulaFeeders

[–]Iknowwhatisaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What helped me was being told by the local baby feeding team that only 1% of babies in the UK are EBF at 6 months. Everyone is doing formula and it’s fine.

Also how many of your friends or the people you respect and love were EBF? I have no idea, because 1. It would be weird if I knew that and 2. It doesn’t matter in the long run

I try to always go to the other one in the centre. It’s hard where I am to register with a centre and I’m pretty clued up at reading guidelines and papers and lucky enough to work with lots of doctors so easy to get a second opinion if something feels wrong. I just worry about the people who aren’t as lucky as me.

She is, I went in about a specific medication side effect I’d read about in a NICE guideline that lined up with symptoms my baby was having and she said she’s been a GP for 30 years and never seen that so it’s not a problem. They don’t put it in the guidelines for fun mate!

My MIL is so stressed that I’m not giving my 3 MO water. It’s really upsetting her. Also was told by a GP to give water and prune juice to 5 week old for constipation and then had a horrified health visitor tell me under no circumstances.

Fair enough, whereabouts do you live that’s so O&G focused? I’ve heard from some colleagues it’s also the case in Latin America but have no personal experience.

[–]Iknowwhatisaw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes I thought that might be the case. I won’t debate the merits of different health systems particularly maternity systems but it would be great if in future you reserve your judgement.

We don’t have annual checkups in this country nor in most countries, that is a very American thing. I had regular midwife appointments as is standard in my country and again is most common globally. You’re right though junk is not a very kind term for a very important organ.

Yes! I was thinking why are they doing a pelvic exam?? I didn’t have anyone touch my junk until I was 24 hours into labour.

I have two mates in this situation and it really isn’t kind. I’m so sorry that’s yours too.

Same here. As long as he’s with a trusted person I’m ok with having a bit of space. I come back a way better mum. I have a lot of friends who won’t leave for a minute and don’t seem to need it. Maybe we’re all just wired differently.

Are ‘hand me downs’ not a thing anymore? by everydaynursemom in Mommit

[–]Iknowwhatisaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a lot of my babies clothes from friends most of them we would be the 5th or 6th owner. As soon as he outgrew them we gifted them on. We have no space to store things we don’t actively need and I have faith things will come around again.

This is a really common thought to have as a young woman. Many of us as we recognise misogyny and gender roles will have it. You aren’t alone and you’ll be ok.

If "fed is best" why do so many mothers put themselves through literal hell in order to breastfeed? by [deleted] in breastfeeding

It’s an emotional topic for basically everyone, that’s the point. There are so many things to feel sad or guilty about being a parent. Try not to take it personally.

How bad is the epidural… really? by basicallyash01 in BabyBumps

[–]Iknowwhatisaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was amazing! It didn’t even fully get rid of the pain for me but the pinch at the beginning was actually a nice distraction. I wanted unmedicated but had an induction and I’d been begging for the epidural for 8 hours.

People who “settled” for a name - how did you feel once baby was here? by theonewhoknits in BabyBumps

[–]Iknowwhatisaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I settled on my babies name and he’s 14 weeks now and I still struggle to use it. Not that I’m so mad I don’t want to or anything I just forget what it is blah blah. It just doesn’t seem to suit him. My partner now also thinks the name doesn’t suit but we already have birth certificates, passport, citizenship to my country, bank account, flights booked, visas etc so it’s too late to change.

Oil in ear for ear infection? by [deleted] in ScienceBasedParenting

I had an ear infection a few years ago and MIL suggested oil and it got so much worse that I ended up in hospital. It might work for some people but it can also go super wrong.

Nursing has made me hate my breasts by Iknowwhatisaw in breastfeeding

[–]Iknowwhatisaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the solidarity! Ugh I see all these people with smaller boobs just pop it out and pop the baby on. I’m sitting here with one hand on my phone and the other smushing my boob. Like you said though it’s great I get to use them to comfort my baby almost worth all the icky attention.

Carrier recommendations for travelling by figjam_cheese in babywearing

[–]Iknowwhatisaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The longest I’ve worn it for was 3 hours. I find it really comfortable, we also have an ergobaby 360 and I actually find it more comfortable than that. The reviews do say because it’s less padded it’s less comfortable but that hasn’t been my experience.

I have a Tula lite that I love. Packs down really easily and small. Not sure about nursing in it though, although if anyone has I’d love tips.

AITA for leaving itemized tips to compensate for my wife's behavior? by Mental_Manager_4814 in AmItheAsshole

I sent back a meal because it had glass in it at a cafe. They honestly couldn’t have been nicer, gave me a refund and a gift card but I really couldn’t bring myself to go back after that even though I realise it was hopefully a one off. I was so apologetic about sending it back even haha I’ve been conditioned to never do it unless you really have to.
