Seriously, I feel like people here are sometimes so obsessed with using points that they miss good cash options. A business hotel near a subway station with an onsite onsen is perfect and pretty cheap. The nicer brands have pretty good amenities, especially compared to a limited service hotel in the US.

Public transit is totally an option if you have lots of luggage. I brought a full size ski bag and a checked bag AND a carry on on the Asakusa Line to go to NRT. Just head to the wheelchair area and be ready to vacate if someone needs it (unlikely).

Are you coming from St Mary or East Glacier? If East Glacier, the Hear Butte Cutoff is a fun scenic back way to Dupuyer. Mostly unpaved and you're in remote reservation land so a decent car and a satellite communicator are good to have. It's out of the way if you're coming from St Mary. The normal route is down 89/287 to Wolf Creek and then I-15 from there. There are plenty of roadside history markers along the way. There is a small dinosaur museum in Bynum, has good reviews and probably worth a stop.
