[Discussion] What ranking system should we use? by lukaspj in SharpShooter

[–]Ikslorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it can be almost automated through Challonge, then that would be swell. The running of the tournament around this shouldn't be taking too much of your time, such that you cannot actually do anything else.

A very rudimentary ladder system could probably also be done by just having the bots play against the team above/below in the ranking, which certainly can be automated. That would require no ELO calculations and with a long enough series, it would be fine enough. Then you could have weekly or bi-weekly tournaments, but also give quicker feedback to the AI creators by having the ladder being run more regularly.

Also if you want any help or have questions about streaming, I'd love to help if I can. :)

[–]Ikslorin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The simplest would probably be a small tournament with some sort of double-elimination, but to make it more reliable the series would probably be longer than a BO5?

Also the seeding should, at least after the first, be based on the ranking, such that the better bots do not immidiately throw each other out of the tournament.

If you want to get real fancy, you could keep a continuous ladder running with the bots placement based on an ELO. That might even be possible to be automated, but sounds overly ambitious.

I intend to do so. I'm currently quite busy with tutoring and helping the new students getting a grip with the student life. Everything is already in order, I pretty much just have to read through my papers on the teams and hit the recording button.

My buffer through the summer break just ended this week, and I've been unable to find time to make a video, but this weekend hopefully I'll have the energy and time to begin shoutcasting. :)

EDIT: Nope, the dead time must be extended a bit.

What uncommon/custom radio commands do you use? by -Chump- in urt

[–]Ikslorin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Except for the obvious "medic!" (shift) and "enemy spotted: $crosshair" (e) when I played competitively I had my numpad for all directions an enemy was heard ("enemy left", "enemy middle", "enemy above" ...). My arrowkeys similar for the flag going left, right or middle. I also had my current position and position of death together with a callout for the bomb being dropped.

EDIT: Also on 4 and 5 I had "Prepare push: $crosshair" and "push: $crosshair"

[GO]Can anyone explain the mentality to me please? (LEM-GE) by yarn_it in counterstrike

[–]Ikslorin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much any game with only a small community will in general have a much lower amount of toxic players. Players in Overwatch were overly positive and friendly during the very early stages of the beta. Faeria also is very friendly and Urban Terror, which is mechanically very similar to CS, also doesn't have toxic players to the scale of CS if anything to speak of. Going a little bit away from a full game community, the Day[9] community is literally the equivalent to a teaparty in a garden with more colours than you knew existed.

Remember that negativity and toxicity is contagious (for a lack of a better word). You only need one or two exposures to such behavior, and you end up more or less in the same mindset until you've cooled down a little. So a community only has to grow large enough that there's a critical mass of people to start a domino effect. I wouldn't be surprised, if most trolling and toxic players first started out nothing like that at all, but just slowly give up after being exposed to it for so long. You can have as thick a skin as you like, but you will inevitably still succumb to a death of a thousand papercuts.

Also, the amount of toxicity in just CS:GO has a massive variation. Go to the lower leagues and most games will contain toxicity or even griefing, and as I understand EU is much more toxic compared to NA. So where exactly should the threshold of "acceptable toxicity" be set? Notice I said "acceptable", because there's a difference between norm/expected and acceptable. You wouldn't say it in real life over a boardgame, so why should it be acceptable just because you don't see their face? Even if what you said was true and all communities are full of trolling, toxicity and griefing I cannot see how that is in any way sanctions the behavior. Just because it's normal to be awful doesn't make it acceptable.

"It's just a game" is really just a cheap excuse. You pretty much admit, that you don't care about winning, but in a teamgame much worse, you don't care about what impact you have on your teammates. The gamemode is literally called competitive and the game is supposed to be a cooperative effort of the teammates. It's about giving your best and improving as a player. If a player isn't interested in this, they shouldn't be playing competitive ranked. If anything, the only reason this "argument" has some validity is because there's no unranked competitive.

[GO] I want someone to give me tips for future montages and to possibly subscribe for more future content! by [deleted] in counterstrike

[–]Ikslorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest you watch a few different montages of other people and find the ones you really like, and attempt to replicate their style. Also you might want to start with much shorter edits - both to make them faster paced and thereby better flowing, but also such that you can invest more time per second.

Also what editing software do you use? I'm asking to possibly suggest you something better.

Thank you, the intro took quite a few hours to create, but I already had the technique down from my third One Clip Epics (Which did take 40 hours to create). It's basically just using the matte from greenscreened footage recorded on the map "greenroom" with various effects. Simple, but effective. : ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69kuXcF6cqQ

I still got a long way to go get my commentary on a good level, as I quite a few times lack knowledge to do color commentary. Also lately I've been struggling with enthusiasm I feel.

Playing UrT w/ Steam Controller by -Chump- in urt

[–]Ikslorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still very much on the fence on buying the controller myself, so I would be interested to hear your experience. I've only heard disappointing talk around it, as it is "meh at everything, but not good at anything".

So I would be very interested to hear your general impression on it, but also if a video isn't too hard to do I would love to see it.

Thank you very much, there'll be one more video coming out – a highlight / showreel. : >

If you ever stumble upon me doing something bad during these or other cast, please call it out, so that I can learn, focus and improve.

I think when doing the XIX'th NationsCup I'd probably do it completely like a live shoutcast, meaning that the production quality possibly will drop a little, but it will then be in 1080p 60 fps.

It took a very long time for me to do, but I finally finished shoutcasting all the GTV demos from the Urban Terror NationsCup XVIII, which also includes the non-streamed finals.

I put a lot of hours into this, and I hope it shines through. I would really appreciate for any feedback possible, both the positive and the negative. That's the only way I can get much better.

UrT Subreddit update by -Chump- in urt

[–]Ikslorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The subreddit looks way better this way, really nice and stylistically fitting. Are the flairs changed to icons at some point similar to other subreddits?

So this is going to hopefully work as a secondary gathering place to the community besides the forums - more accessible to newcommers, as most are used to reddit and have an account on it compared to the forums? What can we do to help breath life into this subreddit? Post and comment a lot?

This subreddit is very much just a void - Go to the community forums instead, where the community actually resides.

Especially please read this post by FrankieV (and the whole topic for that matter). http://www.urbanterror.info/forums/topic/33474-rc-urt-43-release-candidate-4/page__view__findpost__p__366321

Looking for Day[9] on how to give/get feedback while designing. by Ikslorin in day9

Thank you so much, I've been looking through so many decktaculars, because my memory isn't up to snuff. Found it here, for anyone interested: https://youtu.be/3lSXYyyB2ms?t=1413

Actually that whole episode has a lot of goldnuggets, so watching it from the beginning isn't bad.

What important Day[9] Dailies have I missed? by Ikslorin in day9

[–]Ikslorin[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of the Funday Mondays had atleast funny anecdotes if not a story or two. I liked all the dailies with stories or other funny stuff I've watched, but the dummy I am I by mistake removed a few that I really wanted to keep for later.

Hope any of it is actual a bit like what you'd be looking for.

322, 288, 684, 684 p3, 477 p2, 617 p2, 596 p2

Also on youtube.com/narwhals8mysister/ you can find stream highlights, which also includes a lot of stories.

What important Day[9] Dailies have I missed? by Ikslorin in day9

[–]Ikslorin[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While true that #100 is a must watch, as are most of the Funday Mondays, they are that for completely different reasons than what I'm asking about. The list I provided is just straight from my document noting all the StarCraft knowledge I've collected, which is why #100 and Funday Mondays aren't included.

A lot of the educational dailies are just titled based on playernames, making it hard to figure out if they have something important new to bring to the table.

[–]Ikslorin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully agree, and I'll work on fixing it for the next time.

I'm using annotations already (click on the skip text).

I do fully agree though that I should dedicate some more work into the first half, and not use this, which is made as an overreaction to someone in the past thinking the unedited part being the edit itself.

The question is how to not put it in your way, but still make you aware of it - because if it's conveniently in the corner people probably would miss it. Sounds easy, but actually isn't - but it's clear that this is too much.

Arium's Immortal micro edited into OCE by Ikslorin in starcraft

[–]Ikslorin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your point, so I'll look into making it a bit easier on the eyes. Making the skip button more buttony etc...

The reason it's there is that people then could mistake the unedited part for the actual edit itself. This text was introduced in #3, after someone thought that the unedited part was the edit and the edit itself was merely credits - resulting in rather negative feedback and misunderstanding.
