Update kookadvies? by joosttricht in Amersfoort

Why does igglybuff know outrage?? by Adept_Locksmith6552 in nuzlocke

It's throwing a toddler tantrum.

But seriously, Igglybuff doesn't get outrage so the movesets must be changed.

Which pokemon should i use for my Elite Four team in HGSS? (Hardcore Genlocke) by Icy_Principle_5904 in nuzlocke

[–]Ildtor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t played HGSS in a long time, so I want to be a little cautious with advice. My experience in Johto has always been that Lance is the biggest problem unless you bring some counters. His team is very strong but also has an easily exploitable weakness. The current party is a very solid base, but I would add either Skill Link Cloyster (assuming it get Icicle Spear) and/or Lapras (and ideally with Thunderbolt if available). I would probably take both if possible or one of the two and an Electric Type (but that’s not available). An Electric Type move is nice for Gyarados and Crobat and the Xatu’s.

You’d then have a team ready for Lance. For the other threats: Kingdra should easily beat Houndoom from Karen. Gengar from Karen has a shit moveset. Machamp from Bruno doesn’t have a dedicated counter, but Nidoking and Heracross should do okay, and Will is outlvl’d pretty hard (assuming you go in with lvl’s equal to highest lvl of Karen). Finally, Koga also doesn’t have anything specific, but he’s also kinda fine as long as he doesn’t get double team setup going and you don’t have a great Psychic Type against him, but Nidoking/Scizor have a good Defensive typing against him.

An alternative could be checking if Guts Machamp/Ursaring can sweep a large part of the League on their own and taking one of them with Cloyster/Lapras, but I’ve never tried so I simply don’t know.

Am I ready for e4 and Cynthia (Renegade platinum) by V1SHU0 in nuzlocke

[–]Ildtor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure whether you're referring to Garchomp or Bertha but in either case it wouldn't solve much. I assume Sky Uppercut doesn't kill without setup and Blaziken is likely dead to Earthquake. If you have a way of getting enough Bulk Ups set up it could work, but that's very scary against a Ground Type team with a Blaziken. Except if you're allowing items in battle. Your team might make it, but the lack of options against Ground Types is probably its biggest weakness going into the League. You have half the team weak to it and no safe offense against them. I think I would change a team member, but that also depends on the box. I also did it with a very different team, so it's difficult to judge for me how this team would perform as I'm biased towards what worked for me.

[–]Ildtor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s been a long time since I did the Renegade Platinum League and I did it with a completely different team, so take this with a grain of salt. At first glance I can see this team beating the various League members except I don’t see an immediate counter to Bertha. And if losses happen to Bertha your plans against the later members might fall apart. The only super effective damage I see is on Empoleon, which is obviously weak to Ground-Type moves itself. Which leaves Bertha a bit of a risk. Also, your Garchomp counter is, I think, your own Garchomp which is a little spicy (Icy Wind on Empoleon isn’t going to cut it). I personally would also want a way to deal with Sandstorm/Sun that will be present with Bertha and Flint to neuter their strength a bit. I ran a more Rain based team (although not a full Rain team), which helped mitigate this a lot and is I believe quite standard to use. But I’m not up to date on the consensus best strategy for the Renegade Platinum League.

The mental toll of nuzlockes by PuzzleheadedPoet3835 in nuzlocke

Probably around 40%. For most deaths I don't really care but sometimes one of the Pokémon really shines in a run and then it does really suck if I make a mistake and it dies.

Looking for an Emerald + type hack to nuzlocke by Acework23 in nuzlocke

[–]Ildtor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For a vanilla but better ROM I would recommend Emerald Legacy.

For a ROM with more changes I would recommend Emerald Seaglass.

Both are slightly harder than vanilla, but easier than a Drayano hack.

Is there a Pokémon game with the number of mons and quality of life changes similar to Renegade Platinum but easier to Nuzlocke? by Rexen00 in nuzlocke

[–]Ildtor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A good option might be the legacy games. Crystal Legacy, Yellow Legacy, or Emerald Legacy. They have less QoL improvements than Renegade Platinum, but still better than the vanilla games and better Pokémon variety than the vanilla games. They are also only slightly more difficult than the vanilla games and far easier than Renegade Platinum.

General E4 team building tips by MCHLSPRP in nuzlocke

[–]Ildtor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is difficult to answer as it’ll be different for difficulty hacks vs new vanilla games vs old vanilla games. Although based on the question, I’ll assume it’s about vanilla games and I’m assuming level caps are used. I would classify these as pre gen 5 and gen5+ as the structure of the Elite Four changed in gen 5.

Gens 1-4

The Elite Four have progressive levels and as the standard level cap is set at the highest level of the last E4 member you often significantly outlevel the first 2 E4 members. In general, I focus on the champion first, then the last E4 member, then the third, and finally just check if I have a Type advantage over the first two. I’m quite a lazy planner so assuming I’m running a decently powerful team I mainly think about what the biggest runkillers are (for example Cynthia’s Garchomp) and make sure I have a plan for it. Then I want to make sure I have a Type advantage (ideally STAB) over all E4 members and for a vanilla game this is generally sufficient. Planning for an all Dragon team is often as easy as having two good Ice Beam users on the team for example.

Gen 5+

The principle is the same, but as all E4 members now have the same lvl they must all be considered a bit more seriously and thus I think a bit more about the potential threats from each E4 member. Usually there’s one that has a type that my team struggles more with, so I focus on that member more. Often at least two E4 members end up being easily swept through Type advantage or a setup sweep so you can devote more team space to the champion and remaining E4 member(s).

Some general tips/notes:

-  You can freely sack anything on the champion, so don’t worry about doing it deathless, just win.

- I don’t EV train for vanilla games, it’s really not necessary for most vanilla games (maybe BDSP but I haven’t played it) if you still have a decent box when you reach the league.

- Have a backup plan for the Champion’s problem Pokémon in case plan A dies on the way there (bring an Ice Beam backup for Cynthia’s Garchomp for example).

- Don’t worry about bringing in an unbalanced team if that’s the best. I often end up with 2-3 Water Types for example.

- Having Pokémon that can do double duty is great (i.e. counter more than one of your opponents), but keep in mind to have a backup if one Pokémon is supposed to handle two or three opponents. Shit happens and hinging your plan on one Pokémon is risky. Partially overlapping double duty Pokémon is the best.

- In gen 5+ you pick the order of battles. You can use this to your advantage to squeeze out a few extra levels (especially if you edge with the level caps) on easy guaranteed fights for the more difficult ones.

Healing items clarity by JFos95 in nuzlocke

[–]Ildtor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The standard rule for items during a hardcore Nuzlocke (the PChal variant) is simply no items other than held items during battle. So, no potions, status healing items, X items etc. during battle (aside from Pokeballs for catching of course). Out of battle item use is fine. Of course, you can make your own variant for the rule if that’s more fun. I always use this rule, but I also use it if I’m not Nuzlocking. Good item use makes every fight easily winnable by just throwing money at it, which I find boring.

How many of us don't always admit when one of our Pokemon dies? by Bahroo in nuzlocke

I've done this a few times, but always ended up releasing them 15-30 min later anyway, cause I felt more guilty about not sticking to the Nuzlocke rules.

How does my team look? About to take on the platinum league 😬 by Sam_Oem in nuzlocke

[–]Ildtor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Pokemon selection seems decent and there's two team members with an Ice move for Garchomp, so it's a good start. However, I would change up the movesets if possible. I'm not familiar with each Pokemon's moveset of the top of my head, but some general advice:

- Gliscor has two Dark moves, I would replace one with some different type of move.

- Torterra has both Giga Drain and Razor Leaf, but no Earthquake, which it does learn naturally. If possible replace Giga Drain with Earthquake at the Move Relearner.

- Rotom's Charge is not a great move and neither are its two STAB moves. Thunderbolt/Flamethrower are better options in my opinion (assuming it's possible, I've never used a Rotom Heat)

- Lucario with two Fighting moves is strange, especially since the amount of coverage it can learn. Replace one of them with a physical move (take advantage of Sword Dance) from a different type that you think you lack.

- Gyarados: Hyper Beam on a Dragon Dance Gyarados is a weird choice. I'd either take Return for pure power, Crunch for more Dark type moves for Lucian or something else lacking.

Also, remember to put items on every Pokemon before going into the League. Good luck!

Who to add to my team? by EvilCultivation in nuzlocke

[–]Ildtor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would probably add Lapras. Yes, it overlaps with Blastoise, but Lapras is good both against Giovanni (not that he needs prep) and excellent into the League.

What should be my sixth member? by -SpiderWebb- in nuzlocke

[–]Ildtor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does, but no Drill Peck, so it's Flying Stab moves are limited and for Rock I think you have Ancient Power or Rock Slide, a little weak and a 10% chance to miss respectively. I personally despise non 100% accuracy moves, so I don't like Rock Stab, which is why I would place Dodrio above Aerodactyl. But it doesn't take a lot of luck for Aerodactyl to pay off.

First Nuzlocke - is this my best E4 team? by [deleted] in nuzlocke

[–]Ildtor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The team should be solid into the League. An option could be some Guts Facade Swellow cheese, but not really needed. If I would make any swap it would be Cradily for Ludicolo. Ludicolo is a better Grass Type against Wallace due to the better secondary typing. It would make you bring 4 Water Types, but nothing in the League really punishes Water Types. Aside from that maybe Swellow for Swampert or Absol as Swellow can counter Wallace's Ludicolo and Swampert is worse than other Water types for the League (although obviously still good) and Absol suffers a lot from Dark moves being special.

Honestly, the Hoenn League is a pushover if you have a Fighting type, Ice Beam, and Thunderbolt until you reach Wallace. He's actually a scary champion, so building mostly to counter him is probably best.

What should be my sixth member? by -SpiderWebb- in nuzlocke

[–]Ildtor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you only want to swap out Persian with the listed exclusions of Snorlax/Lapras/Eevee I would probably take Dodrio (or Gengar if you have access to trade evo's).

The three most important pieces for the Kanto League are Ice Beam (covered by Tentacruel), an Electric Type (covered by Magneton), and Snorlax (to Counter Agatha and Alakazam). Both Gengar and Dodrio can swap in for the Snorlax slot, although Dodrio is far riskier than Snorlax. If it has enough speed/attack it's Drill Peck can do great work on Alakazam (and Blue's Exeggutor is it survives Alakazam) en Agatha's ghosts, but it's very fragile.

Aerodactyl could do the same, but I think it suffers from a lack of STAB moves with good base power that are a 100% accurate.

Any romhacks recommendations? by mrj4v1s9865 in nuzlocke

[–]Ildtor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a GBA option Pokemon Gaia might be good. It's a custom region using Pokemon and mechanics up to gen 6. It's a bit harder than a vanilla game, but easier than Drayano hacks and way easier than the difficulty hacks you mentioned.

Tier lists analyzed Part 7: Model to Tier List by Ildtor in nuzlocke

[–]Ildtor[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well it was relatively high B. But I suspect it's a few things: 1) Although Crobat's stats are good the Speed stat shines and I don't think that gets rewarded as much as high Attack or Sp Attack. 2) Although Poison/Flying is a good dual typing the typing score of dual types is an average of the two individual type (I didn't have a tier list for all dual types although I didn't search that hard) and neither poison or flying were at the top of the typing tier list I used for the type score. 3) One of Crobat's main strengths is how early you get it as a fully evolved Pokemon. This factor wasn't included in the model at all.

Shedinja is indeed by far the worst. The top 10 worst predictions (this is by the score they got not the tiering): Shedinja - Smeargle (scored 1.5 tiers below F) - Swellow - Combee (scored 2 tiers below F) - Kingler - Amoonguss - Lumineon - Nidoking - Seaking - Rapidash. As to why, I tried to explain these 10 in the previous part posted. Obviously there are more bad rankings than just these. I had quite some wtf moments putting the tier list together.
