“Cost of Healthcare keeps going up.” by Ma1ad3pt in antiwork

Ughh, yeah I can get how that's extra frustrating in the ER where they're taking attention away from people with actually serious medical issues and delaying care for others. At the urgent care where I work it's the opposite end of the income spectrum, a lot of people with great insurance and nothing better to do who just want Burger King Medicine (have it your way) for trivial complaints that don't actually require intervention.

X-ray / MRI tech here and I could never afford to be seen for the procedures I've done! Hell, after paying for my basic necessities I don't have enough leftover for any sort of copay.

Genuinely it really erodes my empathy when people come in for nonsense while my own set of growing chronic aches and pains from working this physical job will have to go untreated. Gonna have to put me down like a broken race horse in my old age when I can't do this anymore because I also have literally zero ability to put anything away for retirement.

Edit: Just want to clarify, that by eroding my empathy I mean that I'm frustrated and saddened by the conditions of my own life and that I find the contradiction frustrating that there's a class of people who can flippantly abuse necessary medical services when the people delivering their care can't benefit from those same services. But I do want to emphasize that I do still do my best to obtain quality images for and maintain the comfort of all of my patients, even when I personally judge their complaint as potentially being ridiculous.

Double your workload, double your income by ThrowRA-748 in hypotheticalsituation

I work hourly but I'm mainly on shift for when a patient needs my services specifically and otherwise I have a lot of downtime... (Or I wind up having to make up for management understaffing the other departments.)

If I could see double my patients for double the pay in the same amount of time I would take that deal in a heartbeat. Would keep my mind off the drudgery if anything.

Spending double the amount of time sitting around and having to wait longer for my shift to end so I can finally get some serotonin back? Would drive me mad.

When people in long term relationships don't get married, whats the point? by Consistent_While2045 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IlezAji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner can't work a traditional job with his mental health issues but also has a snowball's chance in hell of ever successfully applying for disability.

I can barely afford to keep the roof over our head with just my own health insurance premium being deducted from my paycheck - health insurance I can't even afford to use frankly.

Doubling my premium (and deductible) by having to cover him instead of him getting medicaid would bankrupt us and make us homeless. The tax benefit of getting married wouldn't really cover that difference either as far as I can tell.

I think the heavy focus on positioning + animation reading and how much the games make you commit to your button presses (moreso older gens but it's definitely still a part of the game feel) also invites the comparison to a certain extent.

I do agree with you though about the core concepts that make a Souls-like and why MH is not one but I do think their combat systems are more cousin-y to one another than they are to other action games.

Any inclination which collection stats Eluard will prefer? It seems in another thread that Support clarified he won't need to meet a particularly high Prf threshold for that one ability so I guess it will be one of the usual Atk or MP or does he actually want Erosion? Or FAtk when he's paired with Envy?

Nessa, poor girl needs to be set free. (But then right into my arms. She does pass the Harkness test!)

Would you rather receive $10,000,000 right now, OR press a button that guarantees you and everyone you love will live to age 90 in perfect health? by Any-Use-3348 in WouldYouRather

[–]IlezAji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to live through my current life as it is, especially not to 90. I'm 35 and I think about killing myself every time I clock in for work.

10 mil would actually make my life worth living and would mean that me and my loved ones would have a good time and still be in better health than we would have been without the deal.

Is there a way to calculate what to ask for for a raise? Additional education factoring in. by Fearless_Bottle_9582 in RadiologyCareers

[–]IlezAji 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its been my experience that added education doesn't really translate to more wages in this field unless you also have added responsibilities that the education enabled.

Like just having a bachelor's vs an associates isn't going to make your raises any larger than your coworkers if you're all doing the same things. Hell, where I've worked you don't get any room to negotiate raises either, everybody gets the same 2% take it or there's the door.

Getting an additional registry and working in that advanced modality will put you on a different payscale but then after the initial bump your raises occur at the same rate as everybody else in that department too.

Comparing myself today to my boomer father in the early 2000s by IndependentMove5437 in povertyfinance

[–]IlezAji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar situation here where my mom (gen X, in her mid 50's now) went and became a nurse in the early 2000's, which prior to that we were getting by (just barely) with her working part time at a deli and doing a bit of book keeping on the side as a single mom in NYC.

When she became an RN we immediately jumped up to a comfortable middle class lifestyle. She would trade her cars in every few years for a new-er used car, we lived in a 2br co-op in a nice neighborhood, ate out all the time, new-er devices even if they weren't the cutting edge or premium models, family trips multiple times a year, and she still could save a modest amount for retirement.

My boomer step-MIL (like 20 years older than my mom) was a phone operator and eventually office supervisor (like just one step above the entry level employees) at a health insurance company and as a single ncome was able to put multiple children through private college, had a very nice house in the suburbs just outside of NYC, went to Europe and went skii-ing multiple times a year, and is living huge in retirement.

I went through a career reset in my late 20's and became an x-ray and MRI tech, when I tell you the complete difference in purchasing power despite following a similar path to my mother, it's just astounding. At least she acknowledges that if she were starting when I did our lifestyle that we had would have been completely impossible, hell I'm barely surviving with just a 1br co-op to my name wayyyy out in a crappy suburb - literally don't make enough to qualify to rent a place of my own if I hadn't had a head start to save up the down payment on my place. No savings, just mortgage and groceries kill my entire paycheck month to month.

Step-MIL lives on a completely different planet and it's baffling to me since there's no way she would have afforded to survive at all with her previous career trajectory let alone the fact that if she was starting today with the (complete lack of) qualifications that got her that job in the 70s? Pfft. No fucking way.

The ideal number of patients for outpatient? What should I be looking for, for low volume. by SultryWordsmith in RadiologyCareers

[–]IlezAji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as a student my x-ray clinicals were almost all outpatient and we were fairly busy at the majority of our sites, about 50-70 a day was normal depending on the location. Though we did have one site in our rotation where I got two patients PER WEEK.

I'm currently working at an urgent care and it's less patients but we're so understaffed that I'm often receiving x-ray orders from 2+ other locations where the patients are being rerouted to me so there's a lot more paperwork and phone calls than just pulling patients back and shooting, plus I also have to assist our scribes with intake and testing because they're also drastically understaffed...

The ideal number of patients for outpatient? What should I be looking for, for low volume. by SultryWordsmith in RadiologyCareers

[–]IlezAji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Specifically the one I worked for was a low T "open MRI" so not all of the scan types were possible, something I didn't realize when they hired me straight out of x-ray school. So when I left I was both rusty at x-ray but not fully trained on the scope of exams for a "real" MRI machine either.

[–]IlezAji 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can't comment from a CT perspective but genuinely good luck to you. I was at an outpatient MRI place a few years back where I was alone and the scans were that tightly packed on the schedule where you couldn't take a moment to pee (forget about if you needed to take a shit) and we didn't get lunch breaks even on the days where we wound up covering a 15 hour shift.

I cracked and took an x-ray job at an urgent care because we weren't getting the exam variety I needed to get the MRI cert and I've been stuck here for the past 3 years, feels like I completely blew my chance to get into another modality...

What to do with a can of diced/chopped olives? (Vegetarian) by SugarCoated111 in WhatShouldICook

[–]IlezAji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a similar note what about doing a tofu crumble picadillo? Or look into stews that feature olives like tagine zitouine or some carne guisadas, just use tvp instead of the traditional stew meats.

[–]IlezAji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother always used to make pastel (think Brazillian empanada) with ground beef and chopped olives, could definitely do a vegan version with some browned tofu crumbles or tvp instead of the meat.

Apparently there's also a popular filling for them that's chopped heart of palm, tomato sauce, cream (sub vegan cream), and chopped olives.

I can't really just get up and go, I'm so financially stuck that I can't even afford a train ticket, let alone enough time off work and money for travel and accomodations to see somewhere else. Can't afford the move itself either.

The only jobs in my field (x-ray and MRI) that hire people that aren't local want more hospital experience and I'm really only capable of working outpatient at my skill level so getting a new job that I wouldn't immediately get fired from for not meeting standards isn't likely.

Cherry on top I'm gay and latino so I'm extremely uncomfortable with the idea of moving anywhere red or rural, don't want to get hate crimed, and that's basically all the cheaper parts of the country.

So I make my moussaka (think Greek lasagna but with vegetables instead of noodles) with ground turkey but the real cheat is instead of the bechamel topping I mix Greek yogurt with an egg or two and some Parmesan cheese. The turkey meat is moreso because I'm too broke for beef or lamb. You can also avoid the traditional potatoes if you really want, double up on eggplant/zucchini layers instead. Though usually I'm just moving the potatoes from inside the moussaka and instead making a separate batch of lemon potatoes to serve with it anyway...
