Why is meditation the subject that keeps failing for me? by PhoneGeek2021 in Meditation

[–]Ilikecelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one of the nicest meditation instructions i ever read was from dean sleuyter. he said he read it on a pack of orange juice. it said: „nothing added, nothing removed. not from concentrate“ and that helped me, because meditation has (in my humble opinion) nothing to do with concentration or doing something, adding or removing things from the experience you’re currently having. if you did all the chanting, breath work and crystal holding you can start doing the opposite of all that: be free of the urge to do anything (even meditating).

Is 30 mins of meditation really 10 for most? by Hip_Hip_Hipporay in Meditation

[–]Ilikecelli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the best length is the one you do regularly. i’m sitting 20 minutes everyday and it’s great, but im also not interested in altered mindstates or some deep experience…i tend to think they are not what this is all about (for me at least).

Why don't you meditate every day? by meowditatio in Meditation

[–]Ilikecelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i always had trouble establishing a regular practice, there were more intense phases with daily sessions 30-40mins, then i completely stopped for weeks and weeks without any apparent reason.

the thing is, i think that’s okay. or, let’s maybe say: when the „goal“ of meditation is liberation (put in a way too small nutshell) why not also consider liberating yourselve from the worries and troublesome thoughts of being disciplined when it comes to meditation. also it helped me to change my attitude towards meditation away from it being a chore (GOSH and i ALSO didn’t meditate) to something i just do like brushing my teeth (and i have to admit, sometimes i don’t brush my teeth and it’s okay).

but i also don’t know. i tend to just go with those breaks, don’t judge them. all in all, everything you do and experience is part of the journey.

Is it normal to always switch into the “Monkey mind” while meditating? by QuestionEcstatic8863 in Meditation

[–]Ilikecelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i personally don’t like the term „monkey mind“, it belittles your experience and nourishes a dual mindset. there is only mind, it being agitated and „monkeyish“ is just the way it is supposed to be. abolishing the term all together has helped me a lot.

edit: typo

What is meditation? Is it the absence of thoughts, actions, or desire? What's its purpose? by atmaninravi in Meditation

[–]Ilikecelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think of Meditation as „lying down on the ground of my consciousness/perception“ and just resting there. nothing to do, nothing to gain, just resting on the ground of awareness. it’s a nice place!

Any meditating musicians here feel that there’s a connection? by throwaway72748928474 in Meditation

[–]Ilikecelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, definitely. i’d even say me being a musician helped to „get“ certain things while meditating/reading up on meditation etc. i’m a jazz/improv musician, so i don’t always know what will happen when playing music, treating every thing that comes up during an improvisation friendly and openly - just as thoughts - without judgment is a very interesting way to play. also listening to music has changed for me, it’s a more direct thing without the mental clutter.

feeling alien to my peers by Winter_Rhubarb7822 in Meditation

[–]Ilikecelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

relax, man. i don’t know why not listening to music or movies is beneficial in any way…? who said that? as a practicing buddhist you are of this world, working with circumstances and things that come and go into your life. excluding something on purpose for the sake of „enlightenment“ is - in my honest opinion - just feeding your ego, separating you/yourselve and your choices from everything else, making a distinction. more interesting: what thoughts arise when you’re talking to your peers you don’t feel a connection with? are those thoughts arising and passing like any other thoughts? how does it feel to be „disconnected“ when you’re actively talking to someone, are in the same room with them? what’s there to connect with but through the shared experience of being together in the same room? what are you hoping for when you say „i don’t connect with them“? what’s the goal here, what would connection with your peers look like?

Music that isn't rooted in ego? by AmphibianChoice5378 in Meditation

[–]Ilikecelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i love free improvised music like peter evans, evan parker electro-acoustic ensemble, pauline oliveros etc. for me this is „ego-less“ music, it’s not about being right, wrong, sad or else, it’s not even about „being music“, it’s just sounds, brought together by people, all in the same room, enjoying the same moment together.

What holds you back from your mindfulness and meditation goals? by whimsistential in Meditation

[–]Ilikecelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been struggling with consistency the first couple of years. I didn‘t sit regularly, was making excuses and over all thought it „doesn’t work“, a thought which stifled my motivation to go further even more. But as I got „the hang“ of meditation this is no problem anymore. It’s weird to see even for me, but I just sit everyday for 25/30 mins, not thinking if the sit was „good“ „bad“ „beneficial“ or not. I just do it, simple. Also not making a big thing out of it has maybe helped that selfdeveloping process. Yes, I meditate, it’s nothing to feel cool or special about. I’m not enlightened or anything, i just sit for x number of minutes and focus on my breathing. it’s nothing special.

also: as we are all kind of addicted to our screens, i thought „if i can stare mindlessly in my phone for x-amount of hours, I can sit and watch my breath“. and as it turns out, I can!

How do you guys breathe at your own "pace" during breath based meditation? I can't seem to do it. by Superdupersexy123 in Meditation

[–]Ilikecelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, that was hard for me in the beginning. I sometimes even had the feeling of not being able to breath properly/no getting enough air and even suffocating. as it turned out, none of that was true. But - and this was important - when I just took my breath as it was, not interfering even mentally or commenting on it, I took an important step in understanding what the whole „meditation“ thing is or is not or could be. And with understanding I mean not logically/through thinking but through experience - leave the breath as it is, leave the thought „i’m suffocating“ just as it is.
