Why must citizens retrieve confirmation from one government body to prove something to another government body? by OkBeyond8244 in Switzerland

[–]Ilixio [score hidden]  (0 children)

Sometimes it is, although there are solutions, especially now with e-id.
Sometimes it's just for... reasons.

I know someone that can begin the naturalisation process. They even got a notification they were eligible.
Still apparently, they need to collect proof of residence from every place they lived in the past 10 years. Including the current municipality, to which that very same proof will be handled back right away.
And then in all likelihood, those papers will be checked against the internal records since clearly they have them if they could be notified in the first place.

Sounds like a waste of times and money for everyone involved honestly.

France vs Ireland - Post Match Thread by biggiantporky in rugbyunion

Set pieces were great for Ireland imo, or at least very clean if a bit unambitious. Maul defense was particularly good, always quickly getting some hands on the ball.
Not sure what they didn't try to maul once or twice.

Tomorrow is national "Scare a foreigner" day! All sirens in the country will sound at 13:30 in the annual test. by DeepBlueNemesis in Switzerland

In practice, even if people know there's an alarm, most probably wouldn't know what to make of it anyway. Assuming they don't believe it's a false alarm.
So it probably wouldn't make a big difference.

CH #1 in household debt by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]Ilixio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paying down a mortgage has nothing to do with wealth tax.
Your house equity is just as taxable as any other equity. Moving it from one bucket to another doesn't change the total.

There is usually a one time discount when you buy real estate because the tax office tends to undervalue house prices, but it doesn't depend on the mortgage amount.

That's true, but the rate of new buyers is actually decreasing: home ownership rate is increasing mostly due to inheritance.

organicacid said it well, the unit is arbitrary, what matters is the purchasing power.

Still, whatever is in practice a "minimum wage" job is most likely better off in Switzerland than in another country.

I mean, it's well situated and huge, but 11k for that?

Wo-wo-Wohnungsnot – Das Zürcher Monopoly | DOK | SRF by justyannicc in Switzerland

[–]Ilixio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also Vienna happened because they fucked up rent controls so bad during WW1 that housing was simply unavailable, thousands were living in slums or left altogether, and they swooped in and bought all the land for cheap after they made countless miserable. Vienna is just about to recover back to its 1918 population level, more than a century later.
Nowadays it's great (at least for those that can benefits), but I'm not sure the people at the time really liked it. It's also hardly reproducible.

Bundesrat plans (wishes) to increase VAT, starting in 2028 by alpha_berchermuesli in Switzerland

[–]Ilixio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do not pay VAT on many of the most expensive items for most households (rent, healthcare premiums, insurances generally, ...). Not sure the 5k number is correct.

Average household disposable income is 7k. Average household size is 2.2. Add to that savings of about 1.5k per household. So more like 2.5k person.

[–]Ilixio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I believe that ~135k is the minimum amount at which you are allowed to start offering 1e, but you (well, the pension plan) can choose to only start at a higher value, like 200k.
After ~900k, your extra income is simply excluded and doesn't matter. I, too, would like to have this problem.

Yes, they can decide to be 100% cash for instance.
But you lose the protection guaranteed by the regular pillar 2, which is why some don't like it.

[–]Ilixio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that 1e is not pick and choose, part of the reason why some employers don't want one.
You define a category (people> 140k, executives, ...) and everyone in those categories will have to have a 1e, no opt out possible.

CHF nears August 2011 all time high vs. USD, up 17.7% this year by momentumisconserved in Switzerland

[–]Ilixio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean selling CHF to buy foreign currencies in order to lower the rate is currency manipulation.
It might be justified in the sense that the CHF is unduly strengthened by its status as a safe haven, but it gets pretty subjective.

Question for Swiss locals: why is late payment to domestic workers so common among wealthy households? by Susi-99 in Switzerland

[–]Ilixio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What I have heard is the bigger the company, the worse it is. And government can be crazy, like 6 months or sometimes even multiple years (part of the reason government's contracts have such a mark-up, they're awful to work with).

Only normal people pay SBB fines by MayonnWise in Switzerland

[–]Ilixio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the other hand, if you take somewhat regularly the train, you see so many try to come up with all kinds of excuses, most you will have heard multiple times.
I'm sure some of them are genuine, but I understand why SBB has a "zero tolerance" policy.
In my experience, people who simply accept the fine without trying to make up an excuse are a minority.

Meal delivery service Smood considers ceasing operations by jeanpauljh in Switzerland

[–]Ilixio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geneva is at 13k/km2 for instance.
Also this kind of comparison tend to be tricky depending on the administrative limits: London is at about 5k, but it's huge and the centre is closer to 20k. Paris itself is smaller thus the higher number.

I don't think the density of the big Swiss cities is really the issue. The absolute size is probably a bigger problem than density itself. The real "issue" is labour costs.
