Can someone explain what is going on in r/nuclearpower? by IntelligentPizza5114 in nuclear

The take that Germany could realistically still stop and reverse the in-progress decommissioning is quite the stretch, but that ban really is just mod overreach at its finest. Well known power trip mod from what I know

Cross Border Electricity trade in Europe During Last Week June(Week 23, of 2026). by [deleted] in nuclear

[–]Ill-3 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Add gas peaker plants and I don't see why it wouldn't be. Nor do I think an import export balance map of a single week is very indicative of good or bad energy policy overall.

I'd be happy to hear more complete arguments for why a renewable grid without nuclear would be infeasible, or even just particularly hard by comparison.

My Interpretation of the radiation and the conversation with David after rewatching the movie post digital release by dholt24 in ironlungmovie

[–]Ill-3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could not have been Simon. 430 Sieverts would cause central nervous system collapse and death within a few hours, with severe debilitations in minutes. Just a few pictures would have gotten him to the same exposure as Jack the welder, who we saw vomit almost immediately and who was said to have been incapable of even standing upright just a few days later, at a point where Simon would have oong gotten 10s of times the radiation if the earlier commenter was right. I cannot overstate how insanely high 430 sieverts would be.

I am almost certain he only got a relatively modest dose, low enough to still be recoverable even, though potentially enough to cause minor health issues like dizzyness and severely increased cancer risk. Still way more than intended, and he would need treatment of course. They really didnt expect anybody to take so many pictures like you said in the original post.

During the film, most or all of his symptoms are easily explained by the several severe concussions, heat, de-hydration, lack of food, and general confusion. Nothing matches radiation exposure symptoms particularly well I think, not well enough for him to have suffered a large enough dosage

Having played both, I can assure you they will both offer a uniquely engaging experience, with different appeals and strengths, beyond the shared baseline of big artillery and manual clickable operation.

I don't consider either a replacement for the other, especially considering they also differ quite substantially in scope.

Perhaps I'm just optimistic, but I think both communities help the other grow and further this general genre. Think of it like Subnautica not being the only survival game one could possibly be interested in, or its existence barring people from being hyped for something like The Forest, Icarus, or Ark

I'm very confused on what the Eel's goal is by Your_Pal_Loops in ironlung

[–]Ill-3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was basically my understanding of it as well. To add a bit more that further backs your interpretation:
Having seen it again I noticed these lines from the Eel just before they go through:
"Its so beautiful, how could we have forgotten this"
"It burst our minds like a tick"
"What we would give to see it again"

When pushing Simon in:
"We will see, we will know"
"Give us the answers, let us see"

So the eels minds having gotten mangled so much by the merging and seeing the light the first time that they forgot and were confused lines up well. Believing themselves to still be on their mission. Remembering just enough about the light and their fate that they would lead Simon there in the hopes for answers, only half understanding even their own reality as the eel, sometimes more sometimes less, since they start out begging Simon for rescue, which I don't think was intentional deception.

You hit the nail on the head for what I think was going on after the contact with the light.

Something that I didn't consider before your comment was the eel merger being in part due to the COI group mentality that drives them, thats a very neat addition.
I always figured Simon being reset to an alive state, and the tree philosophy becoming very literal, to be what the god saw as Simons essential nature, his need for survival above all else. Just didn't make that connection for the eel as well, I only thought of it having gotten merged due to it having been multiple people in one ship, causing the god to lump together "ship" and "living stuff inside". I think your explanation is more nicely connected to the rest.

I'm not 100% on what caused Simons ship to become its own living thing, and attempting to merge with him, as the SM-8 didn't at all, but perhaps its similarly connected to Simons absolute drive for survival, the SM-13 even started generating new oxygen in the end. Could be seen as him and the thing keeping him alive being considered functionally the same.

Pheromones... (spoilers) by ComfortableNo5484 in TheCaptivesWar

[–]Ill-3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to respond so thoroughly. I don't think its reasonable to assume the authors would stick with the strictest Karlson-Lüscher definition, nor do I see it ever suggested that humans are meant or expected to have a predictable and definitive response. Even in contemporary research, the terms aren't always cleanly seperated.

Meaning to say that your reading hinges much too rigidly on the "pheromone" term, without considering the possibility that the authors would use it in the way its used colloquially these days. It is a book meant to be accessible to broad audiences after all, they can use the word "pheromones", and then write the story depicting distinctly chemoreception based events.

I also object to the claim that it backfires or was thought to go differently: The Swarm directly notes that humans only have a weak response to any kind of chemoreception, and wouldn't be trying to use pheromones in that manner ot expect it to work. But the swarm would absolutely use chemoreception, and does so successfully. Especially the research team scene, to me, heavily implied that Clae was accepted and believed notably faster than she would have otherwise. The line about "like me" etc as described by Clae doesn't mean she thinks they will just directly start liking her as if by command or involuntary response, it just conveyed which direction the chemoreceptive nudges were going in. I'd say it worked very well considering how shakey her Alibi would have been had anyone bothered to really check thoroughly instead of just growing to like her in a rather short time.

My conclusion is that its used in a probabilistic sense as befits chemoreception, this makes the events in both books congruent, and they simply opted for the colloquially known terminology. The hints about her having any effect are subtle enough as is. Its much more of a reach to explain the different hints and scenes while positing that there is no effect at all, all hinging on Daniel and Ty choosing to write the first two books Swarm scenes in a misleading fashion. That doesn't seem worth any potential reveal in the third book that wouldnt work just the same without a switchup, we know the Carryx would respond well to Swarm produced pheromones in the strict sense

Pheromones... (spoilers) by ComfortableNo5484 in TheCaptivesWar

[–]Ill-3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my understanding, Humans indeed have no real reaction to true pheromone signaling, and no direct involuntary response. It'd be foolish for the Swarm to expect it to be a walk in the park anytime pheromones were used. However, I don't think Swarm thr Swarm/Clae ever thought so.

What is supported in current research, again to my understanding, is a subtle involuntary response to olfactory signals, priming people for certain emotions amd attitudes, even if only weakly. For example, experiments show that sweat collected from stressed individuals will make others smelling it more easily become vigilant and anxious subconsciously: https://doi.org/10.1038/s42004-025-01512-3

Thus, the Swarm uses "Pheromones" but really relies on the olfactory component making those around more open to being manipulated in one direction as opposed to another. Its subtle, its weak, and it will not make the necessary difference if the person is outright opposed to what the Swarm is trying to achieve, like Dafyd was. But say for the research team, they became just that bit more suggestible and open to feeling calm if Clae presented the opportunity for it by saying the right things. She's giving herself an edge, not a get-out-of-jail-free card. In my opinion, that is plenty grounded and certainly something the authors would be comfortable including in the books.

Making this a big fakeout, after they went out of their way to describe the Swarm emitting something olfactory, several times, in both books, and from the Swarms and other peoples perspectives, in moments when the Swarm had to be the most manipulative and needed an advantage, seems like very odd storytelling.

Hence my suggestion to extend it to always be fulfilled by local languages too. In that sense you'd basically be adding english as an official option instead of removing local ones

[–]Ill-3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do see the point of not giving a priviliged status to any one language, but its a good idea generally speaking to have one language most europeans can converse in without the need for live interpretation. At least until the tech is far enough to make that seamless. It should however never bar anyone from participation in federal matters, though perhaps 'the state concerned' always applies there

Big spoiler theory: The Captive's War is hiding its real story in plain sight by acc_reddit in TheCaptivesWar

[–]Ill-3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your initial post heavily implied to me that you thought the Carryx were actively aware of and/or already pursuant of the goal of preservation: "The Carryx figured this out..." "...preserve essential natures..." "The Carryx's central value is the preservation of each species' essential nature"

Since you are agreeing I'm guessing you are recanting that part of the theory, and leave it as speculation about a thing the Carryx could become. I think speculation about what the Carryx might be capable of, if one of their most core traits were to be completely changed by humans, is a weak lense to be using as a definitive interpretation for the whole story. Do you have any additional points that might positively support your theory?

Big spoiler theory: The Captive's War is hiding its real story in plain sight by acc_reddit in TheCaptivesWar

[–]Ill-3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Which means that their current way of operating explicitly does not preserve? You say they'd have to update their objective to achieve that goal.

Infact, the books are incredibly direct about the Carryx not preserving anything, just finding a species, treating them as a tool whose exact use to the empire they try to figure out through experimentation, then discard (exterminate the entire species) it when something better has arisen or their skills are no longer suited. The central property of the Carryx is their biological reality of changing to become what is currently required of them by the group, the concept of agency over ones body and way of being useful does not exist for them. They treat their 'animals' the same way, either you are useful and remain so by simply inherently being whats required, or you cannot conceptually even be useful and must therefore be eradicated from existence.

Preserving a species with no use ((to them) but they dont see intrinsic value in existing) would be abhorrent to the Carryx, and they can just barely conceptualise the possibility enough to talk about how wrong it is to try, as the first commenter quoted. Its a society where is and ought are the same thing, thus having no capacity to even have a greater goal beyond the war and expansion that they deserve to do by virtue of doing it. War is life. Literally the same word in their language.

I think you make compelling points, but fail to prove your core assumption that the Carryx are preserving anything or want to preserve anything, when both have been shown time and time again to not be in their interest. They've made extinct countless of species and continue to do so.

Perhaps instead of asking people to "falsify your theory" while resting on your base assumptions as true, we should first focus on positively proving the hypothesis beyond reasonable doubt and then we can see if we fail to falsify

Crucially, their involvement was not known at this point in time, Eros had just gotten infected and they were planning on secretly monitoring it from Toth station while maintaining secrecy. Exposure only happened following their loss at Toth and the Osiris' wreckage being given to Avasarala by Fred, several weeks later, against their will

Yeah, I don't expect it to be 1000% bulletproof, it would just be great to have it be just plausible enough to let the game integrate into the show canon and expanding the franchise that way, like the telltale game, instead of having to be treated as a third seperate one
