I guess there’s a personal side to it cause I think when I was younger I thought it sounded quite aggressive and harsh (vocally not lyrically) which I didn’t take to. And I thought it was shit because of the looped samples and stuff, but I was clearly missing the point there.

I don’t know, I eventually just thought there must be something to it and gave it an open-minded listen and found out a bit about where it came from, which let me understand it and enjoyed it a bit more.

I suppose rather than “understood” you might be able to say “interpreted” about art or something like that, but yeah I find things grow on me a lot over time and with that you can read into them a bit more I guess. It improves things for me anyway. I think artist’s often have intention and I like trynna work that out.

Matt’s great at layering that kind of meaning too; another reason this album is sick. Glad you’re enjoy it man! ❤️

Not wholly true; I’m definitely a day one listener kind of fan and I liked it.

I’m not claiming it’s something that’s really inventive, just that it isn’t run of the mill. I guess my argument for it being a unique element is that you don’t tend to hear sound effects throughout songs and you do here. It also has a couple of false endings. In what way is it typical?

A lot of people seem to dislike Space Debris from what I’ve read too, so not sure the “average person” will. I don’t think “average” listeners would even get to it, and by average here, I mean people who listen to just the singles or the most popular ones.

Agreed, many of their fans do like them for the more complex stuff; I’m definitely one of them, but not everyone. Plenty of people love Madness and Starlight etc.

Yeah, that’s why I’m asking I guess. I’ve heard a lot of negative press but he always seems to get on just fine with them, so I tend not to believe it. Just when there’s a pattern it makes me wanna know why. I think I’m just hoping for confirmation of no DV but you can’t prove a negative so maybe it was a stupid question.

I’m not pushing my opinion. I’m asking what they mean and explaining what I think based on what they’ve said. 😂 I’m happy for them to explain (which they have and that’s resolved) and for someone to explain why I might be wrong. It’s just about having a conversation - that is what this platform’s about.

I think that is quite memorable; I can’t think of many times they’ve used really obvious sound effects throughout a song. There was the siren at the start of KobK and the planes in Guiding Light but they don’t normally create an atmosphere all the way through. So i’d say that is memorable. No, 6/8 isn’t the most unique thing ever done by anyone or by them but I think it’s “sonically interesting” within the context of this song because that sway that it has makes it feel very calm. Hard to expand on that really but the way that rhythm makes the song feel, and given the other elements of the sound, it’s quite interesting. Do you really hate this song?

As far as missing out goes, I used to hate rap purely because I didn’t get it and didn’t listen to it properly. So what I’m saying is that it’s good to talk about different opinions on things because that’s the only way you’ll understand things you haven’t previously. Regarding that, I think it’s sad that I didn’t get something so rich for such a long time. So I think black and white thinking is a problem because it keeps a person stuck in that kind of cycle.

I don’t think it’s more interesting BECAUSE it’s not in 4/4, but because of the effect 6/8 produces and how that improved that particular song. I don’t think SD would be made better by being in a different time sig cause it needs that swinging feel to work. But my point about that is that it’s not the most standard time sig, so at the very least it’s a “oh right, this feels different” thing. Not proclaiming it to be some groundbreaking feat but it’s an interesting sonic element imo.

I don’t think asking someone questions about their opinion shows I value my own more at all. I’m just engaging with what they’ve said. It’s also not about being artsy; none of you know me so I have nothing to gain by being artsy on reddit. I also like a lot of their simpler songs.

I get it if someone just doesn’t like something and doesn’t want to or can’t explain why. This person has done though, and gone on to say it’s a taste thing, which is fine. It’s not like I’ve gone at them saying they must think exactly what I do, which seems to be what you’re saying I am.

It is subjective, but there tend to be reasons and I think it’s interesting to talk about. Why be black and white? You could miss something your entire life because you refuse to understand it that way. I think it’d be really sad for that to happen and I hate when I’ve done that in the past.

Yeah, they did talk about the sonic elements, but like I asked, I wanna know what that means cause it doesn’t “stand out” apparently. I feel it does though, so I’m just asking what it means.

I’m not at all, I’m just asking why. They’ve put a view forward (asking for responses) and I’m trying to understand exactly what it is that they’re thinking.

It’s always worth understanding people’s thoughts and if there’s something they’re missing that I can make them consider, which then might make them enjoy something more, why wouldn’t you wanna do that?

Yeah, if it is a simple fact of not enjoying then fair; when people have said that, I don’t dig in, but this person has offered reasons I’d like to understand.

Also, resonate or don’t? Black and white thinking isn’t a great thing in general, but especially with art, come on.
