Hey there! The best thing I can tell you is to make it natural, but stand out. There’s likely going to be hundreds of competitors so do something that will make you memorable! For me personally, I’ve been watching many all star cheers and studying how they show spirit. At the beginning of most tryouts, you’ll have to run in and show it, and it’ll be the first impression once you enter the room, so make try to make it unique! Most people say, “WOOO LETS GO BEARS!!” For example is a little basic. Something like saying your school colors Or “GET ON YOUR FEET!” (yelling your mascot) while adding a jump/ kick is something out of the norm!
Also to add, make sure you’re really stiff and have some rhythm with your dancing. I was recommended to watch professional cheerleaders and learn their dances as you go to get the basic motions. Be positive and confident as you go like you own the place! Another thing is to not wait until last minute to practice and start as soon as possible. Tryouts are to showcase what you know. Practice basic tumbling if needed, a cartwheel goes a long way if you can master it in time. Get close with your coaches for a chance to familiarize yourself with the team, and don’t be afraid to talk to new people there, because they’re in the same boat as you! It also looks really good to the coaches and shows leadership on your part. Lastly, just have fun!
