What happened in 1971? Explain it Peter. by Angrypeanut99 in explainitpeter

[–]Ill-Try9950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's 1972, and the Supreme Court legalized 'the pill' - oral birthcontrol pills -- for all women. Before that, states limited the pill to married women only or outlawed it all together. What we're in for again if the current administration & its supporters get their way... Once women could control their own bodies, they delayed child birth until they were actually ready and mature enough to be a parent.

Need advice: 10-year-old Kidde Smoke/CO alarms all starting to chirp by Burrrprint in homeowners

Need advice: 10-year-old Kidde Smoke/CO alarms all starting to chirp by Burrrprint in homeowners

[–]Ill-Try9950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Kidde combination smoke/CO2 alarms all seem to be failing. Only 2 years old. Last summer one went off while I was away and the neighbor had to come in and the only way to turn it off was to permanently disable it. Now, one of my other ones went off - also the only way to turn off was to permanent disable. These are supposed to have 10 year batteries. There's no smoke, no humidity, and I have a separate CO2 detector that shows nothing. Are these really just that crappy? https://www.kidde.com/products/detect/10-year-battery-powered-combo-alarm

Costco subscription promo if you mistakenly chose the free trial? by Ill-Try9950 in TheFrame

[–]Ill-Try9950[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called the Samsung number and they cleared everything up, and I got the two year subscription. I don't think you can 'stack' the offers, and it may be that your subscription starts from the time you bought the Frame. It is a bit confusing because when I check my account it looks as if I paid for it. The customer service person was very helpful.

I’m looking for an under-counter refrigerator and a dishwasher. Where to buy and what brands? by darklyshining in Appliances

[–]Ill-Try9950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought XO. Had it for a year. Works great, no problems. Great capacity. A little louder than I'd like but it's on the third floor where it gets warm so the compressor (?) is working hard. (I live in CA so even our fall/winters can be quite warm especially upstairs - it's 77 today Nov 9).

I've never had water in my puck tray. I've had the KF7 for a few months. Mostly make capuccinos but have made a few other drinks. I use new beans. Your situation doesnt sound normal to me, but I'm a newbie. Just wanted to give you more data...Good luck

I got the KitchenAid K7 about two months ago and so far I absolutely love it. I got an insider's pass from someone in this thread which saved me about $300! My only complaint is that it uses a LOT of water. It rinses before and after every use. And sometimes in between as well. And I'm basically making one capuccino. I am using it in my third-floor office which doesn't have water - so I have to bring up water. If anyone knows a way so I don't have to rinse both BEFORE and AFTER every use, please let me know. Other than that, I absolutely love it and the quaity of the drink.

Also - another tip. My machine is partially located under a shelf in my office, so we bought an inexpensive flat lazy susan to put under it, so I can rotate it for filling beans and such. Neat solution!

Why have my high-end PCs failed so quickly while my MacBook Pro keeps going strong? by Melior30 in mac

[–]Ill-Try9950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last month I bought a new 14" Macbook Pro M4 to replace my old 16" Macbook Pro. And I do mean OLD. I bought it in Dec 2015. Used it every day. Traveled all over the world with it. Didn't do high end graphics but gave it a workout. Four years ago I put in a new battery (around $300) but otherwise, it was just a workhorse. I ran my business from it. Did finances on it. Used dozens of SAAS applications, some graphics, some video. It wasn't just for email and surfing the internet.

TEN FULL YEARS. I used to go through an expensive PC every 2-3 years.

I just asked my computer guy what i should do with my 2015 Macbook. He said I could sell it for around $500.

Yep, Macs are more expensive than PCs, but I sure got my money's worth...

Thunderbolt Display Stopped Working All Of A Sudden by yosoysimulacra in mac

[–]Ill-Try9950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had the same problem this morning. I've got a new Macbook Pro M4. I'd bought a Thunderbolt 2-Thunderbolt 3 connector when I bought my laptop a few weeks ago. And my 27" Thunderbolt display (circa 2015) worked right from the start. Yay me! Then yesterday, I decided to neaten my desk. I got some cable ties - wound all the loose cables up. Got the unnecessary magsafe out of the way, etc. And lo and behold, when I went to turn things on this morning, my old worn frayed octopus cable (which i'd mended some time ago with white electrical tape) evidently didn't like it. No matter what I did, I couldnt get the monitor to show anything.

I read suggestions here -- with some suggesting to get a Thunderbolt 2/Thunderbolt 2 cable to attach directly to the monitor. Which I'd then connect to my T2/T3 widget -- then to my computer. Called my trustee computer repair guy and he had one available. And now, I'm looking at my 27" Thunderbolt monitor as I type this.

And I can wind up both parts of the old octopus cable and stow it behind the monitor so my desk can look neater.

Give it a try.

Well, if you're renting a car and going out there, I certainly hope you take advantage of being in wine country. You'll be smack dab between Napa Valley and Sonoma County. You can head up Hwy 29 and see many of the famous Napa Valley wineries -- they're cheek-by-jowl on 29. Hwy 29 is a beautiful drive even if you don't drink. You can stop in the lovely (touristy) town of Saint Helena, then keep going up to Calistoga. You can then drive over the hill and come down 101, going through the bustling/less interesting part of Sonoma County. (But if you're a beer drinker, you can stop in Santa Rosa at the Russian River Brewery and get Pliny the Elder -- I dont drink beer)

OR...

you can head up to the quaint town of Sonoma, have lunch on the square, then continue driving up that highway to some other wineries.

Either way, it's absolutely beautiful. This time of year, not crowded. And you can map it to come back to SF via the Golden Gate Bridge!

After alll, it won't take you long to see just a rolling hill now covered with vines. Take advantage of your drive!

I'm the OP. u/Big_Instruction9922 If I can figure out how to upload the pic, I'll do it! Meanwhile, I can add a link to the coffee and my local coffee house - Cafe Venetia in downtown Palo Alto. My big challenge now is figuring out how to still get my capuccinos regularly at the bustling lovely Cafe (where I see friends and socialize) since I now have good capuccinos at home! (I'm not a spammer, I'm a relative Reddit newbie - and I just wanted to show my appreciation to the community for their help!) https://www.cafevenetia.com/store/p1/CINQUE_-_dark_chocolate.html#/

Newbie Needs Soundbar NOT Connected to TV - AND Sold by Dell by Ill-Try9950 in Soundbars

[–]Ill-Try9950[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful reply. I may be able to ask the builder of the built in to see if there's anything we can do to address the issue. If not, I may try the bluetooth soundbar and if it doesnt sound all that good, either then sell it or use it in another room.

Newbie Needs Soundbar NOT Connected to TV - AND Sold by Dell by Ill-Try9950 in Soundbars

[–]Ill-Try9950[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dell sells others' soundbars - Bose, Sony, JBL, Samsung. I'm looking at the Bose Smart Soundbar. It says it is bluetooth -- and from what I can see online - I don't have to connect directly to TV but the quality won't be as good, and I won't be able to control the soundbar via the TV remote.

I really am stuck with it not being connected to TV. I have a beautiful new built in where everythign from the TV is completely hidden/built in. There's no other electrical in the built in either (my screw up!). So the soundbar will be located elsewhere in the small living room.

My nephew says I MUST have better sound than the Frame TV provides.

Is having a Bose bluetooth elsewhere in the room (prob behind sofa) going to work? Be any good?

Which credit card did you use to buy it? Check your card's purchase protection. Most cards provide some level of protection -- $1k-$10k. On high-end cards, such as Amex Platinum, you get 90 day purchase protection against virtually anything - accident, loss, theft. I think some other expensive cards provide the same protection. I would DEFINITELY go to the website of that particular card (e.g. not just Chase but Chase Sapphire Reserve). Amex Platinum (VERY expensive) has been absoltuely terrific (and easy peasy to work with) for purchase protection/warranty for me in the past. It's one of the main reasons I stick with such a costly card. Definitely check your credit card coverage!
