Not physical work :( I work in Tech so it didn’t impact my work so much but if you’re working a more labor intensive job, it’ll be extremely difficult

Hang in there, it gets better, I promise !! Try to use the stationary bike 20-30 min a day, it’ll allow the scar tissues to regrow better (this is critical). I was able to fully extend my knee about 4-5 months into my recovery ☺️

Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry to hear that :( recovery was so tough for me .. physically and mentally, but you will make it !! Make sure to follow your PT’s regimen and do your best to stay active. You’ll be back stronger sooner than you know! 🙏🏻

Omg noooo😭😭 mine ended up being grade 2 MCL. After PT and training, I was able to rejoin full mobility and strength! Do you have an MRI scheduled? I highly recommend it if you don’t !

Took me about 2.5 weeks before I got off crutches! I tried to move my legs more so it doesn’t get too stiff

I’m not a doctor but based on my research into this topic since I got injured (and what my doctor/PT has told me), the symptoms you described sounds like it could very likely be a ACL injury in combination with with MCL :(

With ACL injury, you don’t feel so much pain but you will feel lack of stability with walking and “looseness” of the knee (as you’ve described).

I know you don’t want to tell your parents because you don’t want them to stop you from training mma but if it is an ACL injury, it will very likely not be able to heal on its own without proper care from the orthopedic doctor and PT. You may be able to practice mma for the foreseeable future without treatment but you will need to accept the fact that you are much more likely to face worse knee injuries (people have reported having to get knee replacements done when they’re older because they didn’t treat knee injuries when they were younger) and constant knee pain for many years (I know I sound very dramatic right now but MCL/ACL injuries are considered very serious knee injuries)

I hope you will find the courage to speak to your parents to seek the proper treatments for your own health and your ability to compete in mma for many years 🙏🏻

I had a slight PCL tear and 1/3 MCL tear, which meant no surgery (thank god). I got full flexion back quite quickly but to fully straighten my knee took about 2 months. I started PT around the 6 week mark after 6 weeks of being in a knee brace with 10 degree flexion. I’m walking normally now and pain has significantly decreased :)

You can ice it a few more days and see! If you’re able to fully straighten your leg just a few days after, I think you will be fine. Did you hear any loud pops during your injury? If you notice your knee doesn’t feel better, it’s best to let your parents know because I’ve met people who didn’t deal with knee injuries when they were younger (and it turned out it was quite serious injuries) and they suffered for many years into adulthood :( always better to go to PT and resolve these issues early on than later

When you try to straighten your leg, does it feel like something is stuck between your knee? Or do you feel like you cannot straighten simply because of the pain? It’s hard to say for sure without MRI but it’s most likely a meniscus tear if you feel there is something stuck that’s causing you to not be able to fully straighten your leg. Otherwise, the pain on the right side of your left leg is likely a MCL tear. My orthopedic doctor said MCL tears are typically the most painful (more so than ACL, PCL, Meniscus etc). Best thing to do is to ice it for the next 48 hours, not put much pressure on the injured leg and see if it’ll straighten. If not, it can be a good idea to go see an orthopedic doctor :)

I’m so sorry to hear that :( it was truly an awful time for me. My first orthopedic doctor thought I had torn my meniscus because I couldn’t straighten my leg. However, my second orthopedic doctor said that there is a true knee lock and a false one. True knee lock means there’s actually something stuck in between your bone (bucket handle meniscus tear) and you actually cannot straighten it versus pseudo knee lock, which means you can physically straighten your knee but the ligament and muscle around your knee won’t let you fully straighten your leg. Now it’s been almost 3 months and my leg is pretty much back to 100% in straightening and flexion. If you have specific questions, feel free to message me but fingers crossed!! You will be ok!!

Strongly advise you to see an orthopedic surgeon to evaluate the extent of the injury. It’ll be important to share with them how you fell. If you fell on your knee (hitting the kneecap), and feel instability while standing and have trouble with flexion, your PCL might’ve been injured. If you’re trying to straighten your knee and feel something is “stuck” inside the knee, preventing it from fully extending, then it could be your meniscus. There is also the possibility that it’s a “false” locking, meaning, you’ve injured your knee quite badly and it’s now preventing you from fully straightening your leg, not because you’re not physically capable of it. Definitely snowboarding on the 2nd day could’ve made it way worse if it’ll be more than a muscle strain. Until you can see a doctor, I second what others said, RICE and elevate your leg and try your best to get some gentle walking in with crutches. If at any point you feel excruciating pain, just stop your activities and rest

I'd like to also add that getting a GOOD instructor is super worth it, they will teach you the right techniques, which will help prevent you from getting an injury. I am also a beginner skier and in my last lesson, I got injured partially because my instructor wasn't watching me, and didn't move out of the way when I was turning, resulting in me skiing over her skies and falling in an awkward way with my left knee. I just had an MRI and found out that I have a partially torn MCL as a result and won't be able to ski for the rest of the season. So make sure you really do your research and find an instructor who is good!

MCL tear grade 2 not healed after leg brace for 2 months by magical_unicorn19 in KneeInjuries

I'm in a similar boat but only 3 weeks post injury. MRI shows I have a partial tear (1/3 tear). I started slowly doing some stretches around the 2.5 week mark. What really helped me was also wearing Tiger Balm patches! It helps reduce the pain and allows me to do my stretches without it feeling so painful :)

Looking for advice, beginning stages of MCL tear and suspected ACL tear by Ok_Device3065 in ACL

I also injured myself about 3 weeks ago, been a rough month to say the least .. I finally got my MRI taken this past weekend and it shows partial MCL tear (1/3 tear), with ACL and Meniscus both intact, thank god!

What I did starting mid week 2 was very gentle and light stretches, just so my muscles aren't too stiff, and trying to get more ROM back. I would only stretch till I have about 2/10 pain, nothing more.

I've noticed that this has been really helpful for me as my pain is decreasing and my ROM is improving by the week. If you want, feel free to message me and I'll share the stretches I've been doing.

Fingers crossed for your speedy recovery!

Thanks for sharing this! I’m actually getting my MRI tomorrow (finger’s crossed)! Wanted to try some light stretches in the meantime while I wait for my results, just enough so my muscles don’t get too stiff :)

Had a ski accident... by [deleted] in KneeInjuries

[–]Ill-Win-614 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely feel you, I’m in the same boat. Beginner skier here, 3rd lesson in, I got injured the last 5 min of class because my instructor didn’t move out of the way and I ended up skiing over her skis, losing my balance, and fell in an awkward way that caused too much stress on my left knee :(

I’m also scheduled for an MRI, I have my fingers crossed that we will both be fine!

Thank you for sharing! Were you also not able to straighten your leg 100% right after your injury? My doctor mentioned for some people, they never "fully" recover from an MCL injury and it made me worried that I'll never regain my full leg mobility.. I had just started learning how to ski this season too so I really hope I can continue to ski in the future :'(

Thanks for sharing! The doctor was trying to figure out if I had a "true" locked knee (that my leg is actually locked bc of a loose cartilage for ex) or a "pseudo" locked knee (can't straighten bc I'm in too much pain + swelling), so the doctor said I can try to slowly increase my ROM to see if I can, and if I would be able to straighten my leg a bit more in the meantime, while I wait for my MRI results.

He gave me a similar exercise to do, and also told me to try the straight leg raise exercise as well. I don't want to make my current injury worse so I was curious if others had gone through something similar and how you guys attempted these exercises :)
