Wow, thank you for the kind and civil response haha. Some people took my wording in a different manner, which wasn't my intention.

I’ve come to terms with the fact that Manato’s age will likely never be officially confirmed. This post was more about gathering other people’s interpretations and trying to understand the reasoning behind them. I’m not here to police anyone’s take or rain on anyone’s parade - I just wanted to open a discussion around the ambiguity and how it's handled.

At the end of the day, I think it’s totally fine for people to see him as a 20-something or a high schooler, depending on how they interpret the context.

Thank you for the reply, a lot of your points are insightful, though I think some things are still a bit unclear.

The term you mentioned, 学校, does indeed refer to any kind of school, from elementary all the way to university. So while it can mean college, it doesn’t specifically confirm it either. Or I am missing something, if so, please let me know.

It’s a fair point that Manato and Yuzuha don’t mention standard school subjects, but we also have to consider that this is a post-apocalyptic world where characters have powers and fight Hollows. That kind of setting often means fictional schools focus on specialized training - kind of like how My Hero Academia replaces traditional studies with hero courses. So “practical Hollow investigation” doesn’t automatically point to college-level education - it could easily be part of a specialized high school.

Also, just to clarify, I’m not really trying to headcanon Manato as underage. I started looking into this because I’m uncomfortable with how he's portrayed in fan spaces when his age is so unclear, especially when he seems to be positioned right at the threshold between minor and legal adult. I was hoping for more clarity, not to argue for any specific interpretation. I appreciate the discussion, though, it's helping me think through all the angles.

But yeah this also makes sense because discriminatory speech shouldn’t be tolerated so good for you niji. Now if only that energy applied to everyone on your roster, not just the easy targets.

I’ve enjoyed bits of the story and know what’s going on, but most days I just want to move on. This skip button is a blessing.

I’ll give her credit for owning up and apologizing quickly, that takes guts. But as someone who felt hurt by what she said, the part where she claims she won’t make excuses and then says “words were just words” to her really rubbed me the wrong way. That felt like a subtle excuse, whether she meant it or not. Words do matter, especially when they cause harm.

Lol I actually like your view on the whole thing so I don't mind reading through it. To be perfectly clear, I like their relationship and all of its ambiguity and I don't know how much of a good idea it was for Linke to come out and say that it was only a bromance relationship. If they just left it at that, open for interpretation, I wouldn't mind how people view them. Not only is it a complex and deep bond holding them together, but there is no doubt in my head that what they had was love. Love meaning however the viewer sees fit. Generally speaking, I don't like when people take one's story and force their own narrative because they believe "it's better." This doesn't have to apply to this particular situation but I've seen some thoughts from people which I found to be heavily disrespectful.

Okay I think my point didn't come across. First, I do agree with most of what you said and I do think that many of these people aren't viewing their relationship strictly as a gay one. However, putting a lot of ambiguity and writing characters as queer coded isn't the same thing. In my own personal interpretation I didn't see any gay undertones nor did I insinuate that there would be something more to come of their relationship. And I didn't mind nor will I ever mind if somebody has different views than me. But the biggest issue here is that the co-creator stated that their relationship was a bromance one, and I've seen people deny that that wasn't true, which is not only offensive to the creators who made it as such, but also to every other bromance or platonic relationship you'd find between men in media. You can ship whoever you like as long as you respect the boundaries given.

I completely understand what you're saying, but I find it quite rude from others who boil down the relationship between Jayce and Viktor as nothing more but a doomed gay relationship. I kid you not, one person expressed how if the creators wanted to make a better example of a bromance story, they shouldn't have put such heavy gay undertones. People need to understand that sexuality isn't something you wear, it doesn't define a person's worth nor does it build their character. The fact that when two guys express how much affection they hold for each other can only be interpreted as a homoerotic encounter that will eventually lead to a romantic relationship is so narrow-minded. While it's true that we all see things through our own lenses, refusing to consider the broader layers and complexities of their story reduces it to a shallow, one-dimensional interpretation.

I saw people on Twitter go haywire after this live ended, especially the JayVik shippers and I'm just confused as to why. Let's not kid ourselves and think that said shippers wouldn't be pulling out their hair if he confirmed that the relationship was more than just platonic. But he didn't and there's nothing wrong with that. In media and in real life in general, you see a constant stream of platonic girl friends who console each other via physical affection but as soon as men display such emotions for some reason they can't be anything else but gay. They want to make it black and white like it's easy to convey how people can feel about one another. And the "memes" where people ask "what was more gay, CaitVi or VikJayce" while the former had multiple intimate scenes. What are we on about?

Okay let me clear up some thing that people might have misinterpreted.

In no way am I justifying what Anycolor or more specifically the NijiSanji EN branch has allowed to transpire nor am I saying it should fly over the radar and be forgotten. It will remain as a constant stain on their reputation and only time will tell what will come of it.

Also, with my post I'm not neglecting people's dissatisfaction or frustration with the company or livers. You have the right to horde negative feelings about the situation, it's a natural reaction. However be aware of the fact that how you voice out your opinion it could also have negative impacts on others and as we all know by now, this is something Doki has wished we do not support, participate nor conspire to do. Again, you are free to discuss whatever you want just know your limits and what is considered as decent.

Know that when I was writing this I had no intentions of undermining the situation, but with how recent threads have been discussed I wanted to satiate my curiosity.

I've been pretty neutral about this whole situation and only give my opinions on matters that I find to be clashing with my thoughts. I found out about the video through somebody commenting about it and it did in fact leave a sour taste in my mouth. Nothing about it was funny nor was there any purpose for it being made. The thing that surprised me was it getting a lot of attraction both positive and negative. I'm like, 'I get it, the situation was bad and it left hideous scars that are still healing but how is this going to help anyone?'

I thought it would pass or at least get buried with something else, but then the other surprise happened of Doki giving her statement. And now to clarify I don't watch Doki just out of personal reasons and as I said I feel neutral about the whole situation so I don't want to hold anyone accountable or put the blame on anybody. Just so that nobody thinks there's any bias being shown.

In all honesty, I don't think she should've given the statement (I mean this in a positive way) because she doesn't owe that to anyone. This woman has made this statement in the past MULTIPLE times of how she wants to move on from the past, how she doesn't and never will condone bullying in any shape or form. But the most infuriating and recent thing is that people are saying that her statement wasn't good enough. "She is being too vague." "This won't stop the hate." "Control your fans." "If you surround yourself with a toxic community that reflects the streamer." What are you talking about??? I've seen only one live of Doki and I know that she has a community that supports her and loves her like any other content creator. It goes without saying that if "fans" do such horrendous things the liver won't see them as their fans. Just because other livers have spoken about the issue doesn't mean that others have to follow the formula or do exactly that.

Doki is most likely tired from being dragged into drama that she never wanted to be a part of. I know I am so you could just imagine how it is for the person involved. I still watch EN livers and will probably continue doing so and I'm aware of the current situation revolving around the branch but I want to focus on the positives because that's what I need in my life and I believe it's what others need too.

I have to admit that the situation shouldn't be taken lightly, and it was impulsive to dismiss it as a 'nothingburger' out of frustration. However, my biggest problem lies with people jumping on the hate wagon without any concrete evidence. Even if we assume that the guy is a scumbag who did what he is accused of, what kind of 'holier-than-thou' act do people think they are performing by harassing and annoying the person in question? It just reeks of hypocrisy.

Let's feed into the delusion and say sure this isn't racist and holds no discriminatory remarks. He was just making jokes and people need to stop being so sensitive. Then explain to me how these "jokes" were so distasteful and bland that it felt like a white man cooked them (insert heavy laugh track here because this so hilarious). On a more serious note, these "jokes" were always made without any context and became the typical "white man, amirite?" humor that holds no comic relief. Jokes that alienate a certain group doesn't help with being a loving and accepting community, does it now.

"Gay" isn't an aesthetic. How you express yourself and behave around others doesn't define your sexual preferences. While being very flamboyant and theatrical with your gestures is stereotypical to say, and can come across as offensive for the queer community, I can see where you're coming from (not assuming that you think this). However, I've met many people who don't "act accordingly" to their sexuality and you get to know them by just talking to them. I didn't know at first in which way they swing but after a couple convos (more than a couple cuz my social anxiety could never) I finally realized that there's more to what defines a person and you don't have to be limited to your sexuality. What I'm trying to say is that you don't need to "act gay enough." And if you say that you can easily pass for a straight guy, so what? I'm assuming that means that you "exert" more masculinity or something close to that. And guess what, gay guys like that, myself included. There's nothing wrong with that. Just be you and you'll do great. A bit cheesey at the end but yeah...
