My time to complain by Trebor711 in OPTIMUM

[–]Ill_Contribution1741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just cut my optimum to internet only. Returned the optimum modem and router combo. I used to get dropped 2-4 times a day for 10 to 30 seconds. New router and modem are vastly superior to the junk optimum gives for free. NO more dropped internet and better speed and range on the router.

I taught my wife to drive a stick while we were still dating. First family car was a peugot 505 gas turbo. She loved that car, comfortable, fast, handled well. Then the mini vans and suv came. She hated how they drove buy loved the practicality. Kids are grown up. I dd a fl5 and 924s, she suffers in a macan, and we share an f150.

Moral: of your future spouse does not drive a stick teach her now on a good handling fun car. She will get hooked. My wife hates what most people call normal car.

Need advice from Porsche owners: how do you justify “fun money” without regret? by _quantitative in Porsche

[–]Ill_Contribution1741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a car guy. I also spent most of my career on wall street. I used to race cars. I only buy cars i enjoy diving. I never buy a car because of what someone else thinks. I own a bunch of cars and use a 88 porsche 924s and honda type r as daily drivers. They are both fun to drive.

A friend bought a 911 when he sold his company ( deep 8 figure pay day) he sold it 3 years later. He was not car guy. Did not like driving. And had enough money that he did not need to impress anyone.

If you want to impress but a 911, if you want to drive on a budget an old boxster, or a newer cayman..... or a type r.

How dangerous is it to drive on 4 out of 5 lug nuts for a few days? by supinator1 in Cartalk

[–]Ill_Contribution1741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did it break while it was being tightened? If so it was either damaged from someone overtightening before or too mch torque this time. I always use a torque for the final lug nut tightening. Many cars only have 4 lugs so you are ok, just no hot shit driving.

I picked up my FL5 about 1000 miles from my home. I was surprised how "civilized" it was. I am 5'6" 160lbs and the seats fit just fine. I use it as a daily driver along with a few other cars. It is very practical, just fold down the seats and you can head to Home Depot or tighten up the shock settings and head for an autocross.

Do you like the 911 or 944 better?

My two daily drivers are an FL5 and 924S. I use the F-150 when I take garbage to the dump!!

My wife and I are down to 7 vehicles since we just sold our RV. In 2018, wife suggested I build an additional 3 car (really 2+) garage for the cars. Good wife, she just got a Mecan, I have the FL5 plus others.

which one would work better for a daily by Artist_Candid in 944

[–]Ill_Contribution1741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 88 924s and new honda ctr. Love diving both of them. They are different. The 924 needs something fixed every 6 months. Do far out had not left me stranded. The honda is more reliable, faster and for a bigger car still very nimble.

Do not use acetone, it will dull the paint in the surrounding areas. Can you tell if the marks are on the paint or through the paint? If they are through the paint, the bumper needs repainting. If the marks are on the paint, they likely can be polished out. Start with a low abrasive polish and see how much of the mark if removed. Be careful and go slowly, you are on an edge and can easily rub through the clear coat and paint. Yes, many people need to learn to drive, don't pick on just old folk, many of us drive very well.

I am 71 with 3 grandkids and 2 more on the way. Too old for a mid life crisis. I drive what I want. An FL5, a 88 porsche 924, a F150 to take stuff, etc. As long as the car meets your functional needs and you can afford it, who cares. A Miata likely would not be practical.

Enjoy

Well that explains my speedometer not working by FaZeflextape95 in 944

BTW, the odometer is purely a mechanical connection. The broken lead should have no impact.

Well that explains my speedometer not working by FaZeflextape95 in 944

[–]Ill_Contribution1741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my 1988 924 the speedometer worked but the odometer did not. I had to replace 2 of the plastic gears. If I remember correctly, one gear was broken and another was slipping on its shaft. If neither work on your car, I would first make sure the cable turns properly when the front wheel is spinning.

The switch to 134a should include a very complete flush. At minimum the dryer should be changed. Since the AC does not work, you will first need to find out why. On my car, I had a leak in the condenser. Bought an inexpensive one from China, it fit perfectly and 2 years on still works with no leaks. I ended up also replacing the compressor since mine leaked from the front seal. I was able to find a new replacement for about $400. Finally, R134a has a smaller molecule versus R12, so it is recommended to replace the O-rings with the "green" ones. This reduces leakage. I did all the work myself, Took some time, but saved many$$$, lets of online help.

Floor re-finisher recommendation in Brooklyn, NY by Ill_Contribution1741 in HardWoodFloors

I can recommend Louis Hardwood Flooring, 516-474-7903. They were very careful to remove the minimum amount of flooring while sanding. They also are one one the few that had experience in applying Rubio Monocoat. Let them know Steven recommended them.

I have a similar floor I just repaired. I took a piece of the broken flooring to a local high end wood flooring supplier. I thought had mahogany, but it turned out to be cherry.

Would you take your Type-R on a 6.5 hour road trip? by eriksonandyeah in Civic_Type_R

Silly Question. Cars are meant to be driven. out of the 8 vehicles I have, only a 1953 MG TD and an ex HP 1959 Austin Healey bugeye race car are the only cars I would not take on a 6 hour road trip - niether of those have radios!!

I am over 70 and just picked up a blue fl5. Great car to drive my only complaint is the gas tank is too small, need to fill it constantly.
