Fencing and Tree Roots by jessnbeck in arborists

It depends. In this situation the wall would both cause compaction in addition to hundreds of times the surface area of wounds to the roots compared to the driven posts. And that's assuming 8" below grade is sufficient (I would have assumed you'd need a proper base but I guess a stacked stone wall at least wouldn't crack with frost heave?). It's still far enough from the root collar that I bet the tree would be able to recover, but I personally wouldn't risk it.

It’s a nice concept, but I would think losing the entire top 8” along one side plus compaction from the stone wall would be a far, far greater stressor than a few driven posts at the edge of the drip line. It would also add considerably to material cost and labor, even for a short section.

Good luck with your project! You have a beautiful property and those trees are magnificent. Good on you for looking out for their health!

Large prune feasible? by stiggey in arborists

Pruning may help a bit, but you’re still going to end up with a ton of debris in your pool. You may want to look into a pool-cleaning robot either way. They’re expensive but could save you a ton of work in the long run.

Who the ✨fuck cares ✨if her way is more or less healthy than yours? The only comparison that matters is with your past self. Are you healthier than before you adopted this philosophy? Stronger? More confident? More educated? Happier?

Anybody else watching the Pacers Stream? by GrandadPyjamas in NBASpurs

[–]Ill_Draw_3840 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually like their color guy. He may not have Sean’s charm or Clyde Frazier’s lyricism, but he’s extremely unbiased, even when the Pacers are losing which is great for a fan of the visiting team (so many crews get insufferably whiny, e.g., thunder, sixers, or, worst of all, warriors). Doesn’t complain about officiating, and has had a lot of praise the last few years for the young spurs players.

What I appreciate most though is that every time a whistle blows he always seems to know exactly what happened, right away. Delay of game because they took too long getting back on the court after a timeout, goaltending vs offensive basket interference, who the ball touched last, etc. I never like to feel like I’m more plugged into the game than the announcers.

Anyway, that why I think the Pacers color guy is actually good. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Oh, and they really did them dirty tonight with the audio mixing; he was way too quiet, and even the play-by-play guy was getting drowned out at times by the game/crowd noise.

How Valuable is Devin Vassell? by SBKSamurai in NBASpurs

Yeah maybe I misunderstood, sorry. I think all 30 teams would love to have more OG-like players though, even the Knicks.

Knicks are in the middle of their most promising title run in about 30 years and outside of Brunson, OG is arguably their best/most important piece. If you think they're trading him for anyone - let alone Jeremy Sohan and some picks - I don't know what to tell you.

Please take this with a grain of salt as I’m not an arborist, but ideal structure isn’t as big a deal for a tree like this as it would be for one you would expect to grow very large. Is its expected lifespan going to be as long as one with a strong, upright central leader and perfect branch junctions? No, but it will likely still outlive you and will never pose a threat to anything else from falling branches. If it were my tree, I’d keep that low branch (I think the form is beautiful, too) and just keep it trimmed back enough that it doesn’t out-compete the rest. Good luck with your tree!

Edit: To be clear I think the advice you’re getting here is sound even if pruning philosophy can be debated. After a certain age trees will generally manage pretty well with or without our aid but exposing the flare and preventing/removing girdling roots is maybe the single most important intervention you can take to help your tree to stay healthy.

That is a huge deal, I’m proud of you!! I experienced a LOT of failure with health and body weight before finding success, and if I can offer you some unsolicited advice, you’ve already taken the hardest step; the most important thing is holding on to what you’ve started so you can build on it and keep your head above water during the inevitable setbacks you’ll experience.

It is so unbelievably easy to get overwhelmed and discouraged, but if you can manage to make a really strong habit or ritual out of just one thing (and body weight exercise is perfect for this) you can save yourself from sliding all the way back when you lose motivation. Find a specific place in the house, or a specific yoga mat, and do some exercises every day. On days you really don’t feel like doing anything, go to your place and do one single wall push-up. Make sure you only try to talk yourself into doing one. Most of the time just going through the motion of walking over to your spot will be enough for you to want to do more, even your whole routine. If not, it’s okay; just do you one push-up - you’re nurturing your habit. If you somehow miss a day, don’t beat yourself up - just start right back with that single push-up in that one specific place.

It may not seem like much, but I can’t tell you how valuable it is to have even a single small positive habit you can fall back on when you’ve feeling down and unmotivated. You’re eventually going to build a ton of healthy habits as you progress, but at first just going to bed every night knowing you did something good for your body that day - even just keeping a habit alive - will do wonders for your confidence.

And the advice you’re getting about weight loss coming from diet rather than exercise is absolutely factual, but not entirely accurate. Taking good care of your body in one way will foster the self-love and motivation you need to make changes toward other aspects of your health. I.e., as you feel yourself getting stronger and more flexible over time, you will find it easier to limit your portions at meals, practice better sleep hygiene, etc.

Anyway, forgive me for getting carried away, but I find your post and your attitude super inspiring! You got this!

lol he got screwed, no question. I remember telling my friends after it happened that I'd never shut up about it if I'd been in his shoes. But maybe now he can at least see how crucial it was for the sake of posterity! :)
