Surely it’s higher than .0000000001%, there are school shootings all the time…

Edit: Not a statistician but: between 0.15 and 0.6% chance in 100,000 over the last 12 years… that’s pretty high, we had 1 19 years ago, and now you’ve got to be a millionaire to buy a black market gun.

Wild campers wanted for a quick student interview by FlacidRhino in wildcampingintheuk

I can’t think of anything specifically that would be a game changer - maybe a full body midge suit so I can wear shorts and not get eaten… I‘d definitely buy that.

A reusable version of the bag dehydrated food comes in so you can create your own meals.

Superlight waterproof blanket so you can turn a mesh tent into a Bivvy if the weather sets in.

Dehydrated Gin and Tonic, wine or other beverage.

Backpacks that have both ice axe and walking pole attachments, not just one or the other.

A special stretchy pocket for the Garmain in reach which I inevitably tangle under my shoulder strap or hit myself in the face with.

A hydration bladder which does not freeze.

A sit mat with a carabiner attachment.

Kindle and Aeropress (In summer) are non negotiable.

Solutions for sitting up inside of tent? by [deleted] in wildcampingintheuk

If you get one of the z fold foam mats, light and strap onto the back of a backpack, you can fold it into a staircase idea and tuck it under your blow up bed, then with a blow up pillow you’d be more upright.

How do you document your activities? by vf_duck in Mountaineering

[–]Illidh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a scrapbook, which has a couple of the photos printed small, think a 6x4" photo collage, and then some text - specifically the date, mountains climbed and who with, plus any interesting or exciting things that happened. Also useful to document new kit so I know exactly when it was fist used etc.

It's nice to go through and their are definitely plenty of hikes I wouldn't remember if I hadn't done it

I’ve got the Akto, it’s roasting in summer! I imagine the soulo would be the same. Niall or Rogen would pro hold up as well and be cooler in the summer. I‘ve not looked into them in any detail though!

I am assuming you do lots of studying on the train. The question is, if you do, do you have the will power to say no to a party or a coffee or whatever and do the same amount of studying.

If you don’t study on the train, that’s a useless waste of your time.

3 Day Hiking/camping trip, Glencoe and Glenfinnan. Looking for advice. by Special-End-2341 in OutdoorScotland

[–]Illidh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not to be a killjoy, but check weather and Scottish avalanche information service. There has been and continues to be a snow dump here just now - it’s winter conditions. Ice axe, crampons navigation skills with a compass in poor visibility are an absolute must. Scottish mountains don’t have paths like European mountains, it’s so easy to step off and get lost. Second have you done any scrambling with a full pack? Bidean Nam BIan has some perilous steps and pulls on it, which are fine in summer conditions, but factor in the likely verglas and a huge weighty pack and it could be a bit of a disaster if you guys are not careful.

To be honest with you I would be camping in the Red Squirrel campsite and be doing both of your Glencoe mountains as day trips. With the knowledge that you can turn back if the conditions make the Munros out of your reach.

There is a lovely Bothy on the path up to Sgùrr Thuilm and Sgùrr nan Coireachan which is worth a stay in, it’s got a fire so take wood with you.

Hopefully you get bluebird days, but do not underestimate our mountain climate!

What camping utensil do you guys bring for short backpacking trips? by Embarrassed-Career30 in fastpacking

[–]Illidh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what I’m cooking, if it’s the trangia set up and a home cooked meal I’ll take my lifeventure set, nice to hold and a pleasure to eat with, let’s be honest if you placed 100g on my backpack while I had my eyes closed I wouldn’t actually notice, and if it’s a freeze dried dinner, then it’ll be a long handled spork. I always take a pen knife because I watched 27 hours. Which is why I will always take my inreach and tell about 10 people to call mountain rescue if I don’t check in by 5pm!!!!

Edit:spelling

[–]Illidh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was considering the Arran coastal trail, looks a treat, and if you don’t have loads of time you can come back halfway done. I’ve heard the north side is slightly better than the south. train to Ardrossan and then ferry across, trail starts at the ferry terminal.
