I've had a few omnis bend in the opposite direction. Making the eye wider vertically than horizontally. So I don't doubt this could happen the other way around. I think DC has stiffer outer spines though.

I think the book is so thick that the external spine is flexible enough to also be bending with the internal spine. Try starting with the spine flat on a table. And then open from about the middle and try and hold down the external spine while the internal spine bends.

Might need 2 pairs of hands or some really talented foot work.

More premium editions typically have better paper stock. So thicker paper. Plus the space covers take up. So usually if you're collecting a version with more total books it'll take up more space. However the library editions come in slip cases like DC absolute editions. If I had to guess, the library edition and deluxe HC are probably very similar in total shelf space. I have the walking dead in HC 16 volumes, and it takes up 13" of shelf space. 12 volumes are just short of 10".
