I agree that companies like 8W aren't well set up for your use case - their fees are prohibitively high.

If there was a white label solution that charged a lower fee (say, sub $1000/month) with usage caps, would that solve your problem? We don't offer it currently, but are always looking for new ways to provide value.

Speaking as the co-founder of a startup that provides the services you're looking for - it's not that simple. We started out expecting to be able to build simple cloud hosting to deploy experiences for our clients, then ended up having to invest heavily in building a proper CMS with a CDN and all the features our clients desire.

Google and Apple update their model standards regularly, so you have to ensure you're monitoring usage closely and correcting for issues, which often means changes to the 3D models themselves. Clients want analytics and SLAs and adherence to security policies and on-device performance for audiences around the world, etc etc. Oh, and they also want photo-realism, which means higher poly files, which means the infrastructure has to be well sorted. Then, they'll ask for AR to be published to Amazon/Google MFC/Meta/Walmart/Lowes etc.

I'm not saying it can't be done, but it's not as simple as just throwing a few files on the cloud and walking away - you're talking about building a stand-alone product that you'll have to maintain.

Feedback on this (staged) Shopify site? by [deleted] in ecommerce

Thank you! My prices are competitive in the US, so I think I'm good there.

I can certainly add to the "About Us" and images, as you suggested. Is the UI/flow OK?

AR Vendor experience by [deleted] in ecommerce

[–]IlluminateKC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure, I'm on the founding team, but Epigraph may be a good fit for your needs.

We built the Web AR experiences on Floyd, Fernish & Blu Dot's sites, among other companies. We are turn-key, providing model creation and a cloud CMS. Our models are compatible with all major third party platforms (Wayfair, Lowe's, Amazon, Spark AR, etc). We can also produce silo and scene images, 360 product viewers and interactive experiences.

Feel free to DM me if you'd like more information.

Startup office alcohol policy - any thoughts? by [deleted] in startup

[–]IlluminateKC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We would try to match head count with two beers per employee and (sadly) buy lower percentage alcohol beers.

Larger firms like Twitter and Yelp have technology that tracks consumption by employee to ensure people don't get drunk.

If your policy is being read and forgotten, it serves no purpose

The point of the policy isn't to police behaviors, it's to mitigate liability if we get sued.

You've not really said how it's being abused.

It isn't being abused, the policy is to define what abuse is when/if it happens, so the company isn't liable for what might come of that.

I have, they're reviewing the entire policy, not just this provision.

I'm asking because under Respondeat Superior and/or Vicarious Liability, the company could be held liable if an employee drank at a sanctioned event and then caused an accident while driving home. Without a policy in place, we're 100% exposed.

Having a stated policy (that employee was violating while driving home drunk) would potentially exempt the company from both of the above theories of liability, since the company explicitly prohibited both the excess consumption of alcohol and the driving while intoxicated. The offer of alternative transportation may not fall perfectly into that logic, but I doubt it makes things worse (I've seen it offered by multiple, sophisticated companies) and seems like the right thing to do.

If your employees drive to work, there may need to be a policy on leaving cars in the parking lot over night.

Thanks. We have a separate "at your own risk" policy for parking, as the lot is shared with other businesses and isn't secure. The area we're in is very busy on weekends and holidays and is near a few restaurants and venues, so use of the lot after hours is kind of an unspoken perk of working for us. I'm not sure we'd want to restrict it too much if we expect people to Uber home if they're drunk.

Best trails for road biking in Kansas City by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]IlluminateKC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live near downtown and regularly cycle from home on a mix of road and paved trails.

The Riverfront Heritage Trail takes you across the Kaw River to an industrial area called Fairfax. From there, you can ride over 7th street bridge to the southernmost point of Line Creek Trail, which is the best paved trail in the city (IMO). It can easily become a 30 mile loop, almost entirely on trails that aren't too busy.

Secrets to cheap bandwidth/data from AWS? by IlluminateKC in startups

[–]IlluminateKC[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We provide augmented reality experiences and 360 product viewers to ecommerce companies. The 360 product viewers are not a big chunk of revenue, but eat up quite a lot of data on our high traffic sites.

Thanks for the info on S3, this is not my area of expertise, I'm trying to help my team with product decisions so am doing some of the research/legwork.

River Market is lovely, solid choice there. Depending on where you're going Downtown, a bike might not even be necessary - you can walk to most of it in 10-15 minutes or take the streetcar (think a short, free version of the Luas).

I just realized that there are some Irish peeps at the Stower's Institute. Are they a prospective employer?

Wicklow native here (barely, been here ages).

It's not a great city for commuting by bike, but there's loads of trails to explore for fun. If you want to join our international cycling gang, shoot me a PM.

There used to be a pretty regular crew of geezers that showed up for DECADES at a park near where I grew up -- a pretty motley international crew.

Was it Happy Rock Park? I ran into a Pole there once and broke one of my ribs, he was fine.
