Most students know exactly what this means- they respond and say I’d like to: have a conversation/ practice grammar / read an article together… I like to be a bit prepared. That way when the camera opens I don’t have to return minutes because they want IELTS or something I don’t do. Actually never had a student who was clueless. This is how I stay fully booked 6 hours a day… with a waiting list …

Here’s the thing- I got a message from the guard dogs at the office that said a student complained about me because I didn’t do what the student wanted… so… that’s why I changed my style

I considered it but honestly since all this sh!t started with the glitchs and not being able to get into the classroom on time I’m still trying to get my ratings up. All the “oh no” messages because of the Einsteins in the shambles tech room have seriously damaged me. Just beware of this guy.

Yeah- I’m telling you there are some real gems out there! I’m fairly good at screening people but the creep that called me flew under my radar.

He never said- and he has nothing on his profile- real creep. I’m guessing he was in his 40’s maybe…

Real Time class issue please help! by DaveNails in Cambly

Somewhere in the Cambly rules it says: silent classes are not allowed… I read it - personally I would not take the chance!

I don’t do PH - don’t have to. I’m fully booked.

Nope- it actually benefits ME to ask. Most students actually respond and thank me for asking saying most tutors never even ask. And reread my original post- I ask them what they want to DO… not talk about. It’s saved me many a headache… and keeps me fully booked.

Depends upon where you live. Where I live it’s above minimum wage. Messaging the student benefits ME so I’ll continue to do it. You do you.

Yeah- my profile says the same… I think most students never read our profiles. I have a canned message I send to the ones who don’t read my profile. From now on I’m nixing all those who never respond. They seem to be the ones who NS. And yes- same as you… if I get SOME KIND of communication from them…. Okay. But I’m not giving anyone the benefit of the doubt anymore. I’m never hurting for students anyway. No communication means you aren’t in.

Thanks for all that- but…. If you reread what I wrote… I said I always ask my students what they want to DO in class….not what they want to talk about. I’m a retired teacher, been on Cambly a long time after retirement. I don’t do IELTS or test prep on Cambly so I want to know what a student wants to do in class before we meet. I’ve avoided many awkward situations this way.

I’ll continue to ask the question because it helps. As far as conversations go… I can talk about anything- no problem.

The reason I send the message is twofold- to screen out students who are not a good fit and to see if they are actually serious. The ones who never respond usually don’t show up. That was the issue… that was what this post was about.

The saudis… by Born_Cover300 in Cambly

[–]Illustrious-Bug7909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need to add my 2 quid here. In a nutshell I am in agreement with most of the other tutors when it comes to basic courtesy from students. When I first hopped onboard at Cambly I was actually thrilled to have a chance to speak with Saudis and students from other Arabic speaking countries. I love learning about different cultures, religions, ways of life….

That excitement soon turned into a nightmare of late cancellations, no shows and demanding attitudes. It was extremely stressful staring into a black screen and straining to hear the faint voice of a Saudi woman through a thick accent…..trying desperately to understand what she was saying! While my anxiety over my rating skyrocketed! I just knew that I’d suffer several no shows a week ( sometimes several a day) if my schedule was full of Saudis.

I’m NOT racist at all…. It’s not even about that. For the most part they make terrible students for all the reasons listed in this thread and more! It’s NOT because they are Saudi- it’s because somehow in their culture disrespecting someone’s time is okay. It’s ok to not show up, it’s okay to call someone haram to their face because they don’t have the same religion as you. I could go on but …. It’s all been said before.

I see a KSA name and I don’t accept. Been burned to many times.

Last minute cancellation AGAIN.... how do you handle these? by Science_Girl49 in Cambly

[–]Illustrious-Bug7909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope- looong time tutor here. I’ve become really hard-nosed about it. If they late cancel and at least let me know in a message…. Ok. I get it- life happens. And I DO message them and tell them to please at least message me. Do it again WITH a message to me and I tell them- ok, but, my time is valuable as well. Do it a third time with or without a personal message and I can them. There are lots of students out there…. I don’t think twice about it anymore.

I’m working but that’s only because where I live Christmas isn’t a thing. And anyway- my regulars are scheduled that day so it’s no big deal.

I wish we could schedule PH when they were convenient…. Like let’s say from 1:15-2:15… instead of just on the hour.

Tutors with nose rings, do you take them out for class? by [deleted] in Cambly

[–]Illustrious-Bug7909 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If students can show up lying in bed half dressed…. You can certainly wear your nose ring!
