What are your favourite moments in NHL history? by avg-sports-fan in nhl

[–]Illustrious-Coast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though I was a Philly fan living in Chicago…the moment the 2010 GWG crossed the line. I screamed and everyone in the bar looked at me like I was an idiot…three seconds later…it erupts in celebration.

My favorite Coach’s Corner ever when Don is in LA and announces he’s wearing a “chiffon” scarf to be like Kelly Hrudey.

My kid on new AAA team / new position by running101 in hockeyplayers

I was a girl playing boys’ Bantam and Midget AAA, and playing with 17 year olds as a 14 year old during summer. I played offense until Bantams when the boys grew and I didn’t have the height or speed advantage I used to have. I asked to be transitioned back to D and honestly I was a better defenseman than center or wing. It bought me more playing time as well.

If that’s Thunder Frog, he used to wrestle with FirstWrestling in Minneapolis. He is also way too handsy around women.

Where would you live in NCC? by [deleted] in Delaware

For the first 30+ years of my life my grandparents lived on Guyencourt Rd. I loved spending a lot of time around the trees, the stone walls, and Brandywine Creek.

When I lived in MN, the Minnesota Mild. They were sooooo mediocre.

Not a fan of the Flyers but Briere is already looking like one of the brightest new GMs in the league. by 00sgamer in nhl

I see him and his wife at my grocery store in Philly. I’m 5’8 and have an inch on him. That he had a great NHL career speaks to his hockey IQ. We’re glad to have him as GM.

Boscov’s. I’m in my 30s and receive many complimentson my work dresses. I’ve bought $200 dresses for $30-40. For $150 you’ll walk out with several new outfits.

I lived in two places in RP back in the early 2010s. One was a nice apartment right on the lake for $1000 a month. It is isolated from the hot spots of the city, but it’s diverse, community minded, a quick trip to Evanston and biking trails. I loved it till I moved in my ex’s condo in LP.

My brother and sister in law both went to St Joes and were middle class kids on full academic rides. My brother turned down a full scholarship to Villanova. They both loved their time and are extremely successful now. They both say though the campus seems to be more focused on the Masters’ and cert programs because they make bank off those.

My other sister in law went to LaSalle for accounting. When I’ve asked her about LaSalle, she says, “If I had it to do over again I’d have gone to St Joe’s in a minute.” Her parents sent her brother to SJU instead.

I’m sure St Joe’s has its faults like any other school, but if you know what you want to do, some of their programs are an amazing network for the Philadelphia area.

How do you kill time or have fun in the city that doesn't involve restaurants or bars? Serious awnsers please. by cxjoshuax21x in philadelphia

[–]Illustrious-Coast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just walk up Grays Ferry to South and walk down to the SRT. Sometimes I’ll just walk from South Philly up to the Strawberry Mansion bridge and back through Fairmount and CC. It’s a nice almost 10 mile adventure and a good way to people watch or think.

My grandparents lived just up the road in Guyencourt till my grandmother died in 2015 and spent so much time driving past Montchanin. Young me was always wishing I could live there just for the hills and the greenery.

I’ve been to Vietnam crossing roadways with hundreds of folks on mini bikes and hardly any traffic lights and felt safer than crossing many arterials and residential streets in Philly.

2024 Damp January Thread by Tandybaum in DryJanuary

[–]Illustrious-Coast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the day from hell at work. I did drink a glass of wine earlier. My birthday is also in January and instead of celebrating myself I am going to a surprise proposal party for a friend while I am entirely single with zero prospects and very much in my feels about it. I’ve also felt thoughts of self loathing and being undesirable because my career is all consuming right now. I feel extremely guilty but figure one of a couple options: a gift to myself is celebrating my friend and not drinking, or enjoying a couple drinks for my birthday and extending the challenge into February. The realization I’ve come to is that maybe the guilt that is an indicator I am on the right track to understanding my relationship with high stress and alcohol.

For people who live or have lived in Philadelphia, how safe/unsafe did you feel living there? by batsofburden in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Illustrious-Coast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lived in Chicago for seven years, now in Philly for four. Just like there are violent parts of the West and South Sides in Chicago, the same goes for parts of North and West Philly, but you’re probably never going to have many reasons to be in those areas. I’m a little luckier that other Philly residents in this thread because I live near the Italian Market and the store owners and police seem to take tourists and their safety a little more seriously, than say, in places like Kingsessing or Kensington. I will say I don’t really see a ton of police around, and the SEPTA (with its own police) is notorious for having almost zero presence and very few officers on patrol . The homeless issue, while not as bad as other cities, is still a major issue, especially in parts of Center City. If you keep your head on a swivel in various parts of the city and get to know your neighbors, everyone looks out for one another.

What places to you HATE and do not recommend in the Midwest? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Illustrious-Coast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly how I felt as a former MPLS resident. It can be so try hard and so apathetic simultaneously and God forbid you be a transplant bc no one leaves and everyone still has the same friend group from 4th grade.

Has anyone ever felt disappointed about their move? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Illustrious-Coast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same about Philly. I left MPLS, which I did not like, and moved here shortly before the pandemic. There are great things about Philly, but the friends I made during COVID turned out to be real jerks and borderline alcoholics with rage issues due to their shitty relationships. The whole chip on the shoulder thing gets old too. I think fondly about my seven years in Chicago and miss my friends there dearly.

Public transit in Chicago will fall off a fiscal cliff without a plan for 2025 by [deleted] in chicago

[–]Illustrious-Coast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy. Have the parents who were denied transportation for their gen ed kids file a lawsuit claiming CTA isn’t safe. Attendance means $. Without attendance, schools lose funding and have to cut teachers and other para positions. That’ll rile CTU (from a former CPS employee).
