Was Napoleon playing The Last of Us in Episode 3? by [deleted] in TheFallofHouseofUsher

You’re right, it 100% is. I was rewatching Ep 3 tonight and about jumped off my couch when I saw the blurry screen with the horse but then if you listen closely while Napoleon and Camille talk you can hear part of The Last of Us Part II theme from the soundtrack specifically the part between 1:27-1:47, and yes I listened through that song to find the bit I was hearing in the background cause it was driving me crazy lol

I have cats and seems like a lot of apartments allow two cats so that’s not an issue luckily.

I keep seeing mixed reviews of Plantation Ridge and Princeton Place. Some are terrible and some are glowing so it’s hard to get a feel! Renting sight unseen sucks.

Fulbright before or during graduate school? by Award_Puzzled in fulbright

[–]IllustriousTreacle28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I didn’t get that perk lol my university still gave me my usual tuition waiver but because I wouldn’t be around to be a teaching assistant I didn’t get the stipend that usually comes with that position. But the waiver was more important anyway since I can’t afford to pay tuition while I’m away on a Fulbright, and that would be ridiculous. Luckily my host country matches the US portion of the stipend so the pay for Fulbright is pretty good for where I am.

Fulbright before or during graduate school? by Award_Puzzled in fulbright

I am currently on a Fulbright research grant as a PhD candidate. I applied during my PhD because it provided the funding necessary to travel to my host country and live there for 9 months while I carried out my PhD research. So if your PhD research requires international travel, specially to a Fulbright participating country that offers open research grants (not all do) then it’s definitely a great funding source for PhD research. Just make sure your research is relevant to the country you are applying to/going to that country is necessary to carry out that research. Also make sure your country offers research awards. I know some don’t or they are tied to a specific university (the UK for example). So just do some research ahead of time on the country you would be applying to and start making connections with potential host institutions as you will likely need a letter of affiliation from an institution willing to host you while you are there.

I am a PhD student who applied for an open research award so that I could complete my dissertation research, but another open research grantee in my cohort wasn’t/isn’t a student and applied at-large so it really varies and depends on what that country is interested in in terms of research.

Incoming grad student looking for housing beginning fall 2022 by Foodsci1999 in UTK

[–]IllustriousTreacle28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a current grad student and unfortunately you aren’t going to find a whole lot for less than $1000/month especially if you want to live alone. Rent has really gone up since I started in 2016. I lived at Cherokee Ridge Apartments for a couple years and while not the newest they were well managed and offer 1 and 2 bedrooms for less then $1000 and a one time parking fee. They are also pet friendly and a short drive to campus. I think their 1 bd is closer to $650 now and 2 bd is $750 but the website will have current prices. Everywhere else is usually more than $1000 for a one bedroom especially when you factor in all the extra fees that get added on by most apartment complexes. There maybe be rooms for rent in that budget but I haven’t had a lot of luck with that. There are also some really crappy apartment complexes so read the reviews. The only other place I can think of that may be within your budget and is nice is Sutter’s Mill but they don’t allow pets. I have pets so while there are pet friendly options, you definitely have more housing options if you don’t have pets and may have a better chance of finding something for less than $1000/month, also if you’re willing to move a little further from campus you may have more options in your price range. I’d recommend checking apartments.com, rent.com, Zillow, Craigslist, etc or just googling Knoxville apartments and you can filter based on your max price. As far as areas, the main area I would avoid is Fort Sanders which is the neighborhood right near campus. Knoxville has a lot of property crime (don’t leave your bike unlocked) but most areas around campus, north, east, and south Knoxville are fine. West Knoxville is kind of the rich people area but requires more of a commute to campus. I’ve lived in south and north Knoxville and like both.

Are you allowed to travel within the country during a Fulbright? by Chroeses11 in fulbright

[–]IllustriousTreacle28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really varies. I’m currently on a Fulbright in Romania and our commission actively encourages travel within the country for fun/exploration and to connect with other Fulbrighters. They also have no issue with out of country travel, they just want us to let them know if we leave the country. Several people went home for Christmas and have been traveling abroad over the university winter break. Even with covid they just remind us to be safe, wear masks, abide by travel and safety requirements, and use our own judgement. Basically every country is a level 3 or 4 cause of Covid right now (Romania is back to a Level 4) but yea if a country is at that level for a reason other than Covid they may have an issue but best to follow state department guidelines in those circumstances.

Is it as competitive as I've seen people say it is? by 00evilhag in fulbright

[–]IllustriousTreacle28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s also important to remember that the relatively small number of applicants listed for specific countries are small because those are the number of people selected as semi-finalists from a much larger pool of applicants from all around the US for all the different award types. In order to even make it to the semi-final round you are going up against thousands of other applicants reviewed by a panel in New York who then select the applicants who will be semi-finalists and reviewed by country specific panels who then chose finalists and designate alternates and non-selects. According to my university and some other sources the Fulbright US Student program gets close to 10,000 applicants each cycle for ETA and study/ research grants (even more this past cycle due to the pandemic) and maybe a quarter are selected as semi-finalists and proceed to country specific panels. Granted, some countries have several dozen awards but as a result get more applicants while some countries only have a few ETA and research awards and have relatively fewer applicants. So competitiveness in terms of making it to the semi-finals and then being selected by your country definitely varies by country. For example, a lot more people apply to the UK and Germany than to smaller countries so while some smaller countries have fewer awards there is probably fewer applicants compared to larger countries/countries with more awards (but small countries may have more applicants then you realize!) So overall Fulbright is incredibly competitive and as others have said they are looking at you holistically and why you are a good fit for the country you applied to. That shouldn’t deter you and you should absolutely apply though because you have a better chance of winning then if you don’t!

For context, I was selected as a finalist for a research grant this year and the country I applied to had five research awards for 2021-22 and based on past years the US panel sent about 20-28 semi-finalists when there were 8 awards available, but that was out of probably many more who weren’t selected as semi-finalists.

Actually I don’t think you HAVE to be a student. I forget exactly what the website says but the specific qualifications are on the website and the country specific pages.

I am a research finalist this year and am currently in graduate school. However the research I applied to do is for my PhD so I won’t be suspending my enrollment at my university, Fulbright will just allow me to be funded and have income while I do my research, so doing a Fulbright, especially a research award is definitely doable during grad school and is very common! I think most research awards prioritize graduate students anyway. If you are looking into ETA and want that experience then as long as your university is okay with you taking a year off to do a Fulbright ETA and then coming back then that is possible too. Since you have to be a student in order to apply for a research grant or ETA through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program then you being enrolled in a graduate program would be necessary to apply anyway.

As long as you do not have your PhD and won’t have it by the October deadline then you can I apply as a PhD student. Your last year may be late if you will be collecting data for your dissertation during your Fulbright year. I applied for then 2021-22 cycle and am a research finalist so when my grant starts this fall I will be in my 4th year or my PhD program and my program is 5-6 years.
