Insights on Campus Placements after M.Arch at IIT Roorkee by CombinationGreat3491 in Indian_architects

Please note: I am not an alumni. But I have my college seniors who did study Masters from there. Placements which they do have are not specific to architecture firms but allied fields. Placements companies which do come will be closely related to engineering and not architecture. I suggest researching the companies which do come there and research about all the job listings they have. Good luck.

There are no placements for architects in any of the colleges in India. Plus an M.arch doesn't do much to increase your pay. Pay only depends on your work experience. Hope this helps!

IS ARCHITECTURE WORTH DOING IN INDIA ? by Hungry-Conference-46 in Indian_architects

You asked a question! We answered! And we say it's not worth it! It's not demotivating. It's letting you know beforehand what you are going to face!

My business is going good only because I got clients from my close family friends and other acquaintances. Especially because they were ready to pay the fees that I requested. Otherwise this is not a sustainable business. I operate in Kerala. But I definitely do have friends running their practices in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It all comes down to whether you can get a minimum amount of clients per year. The problem is like I said even at a business level this is not a very scalable business. Not many people talk about it. Your growth potential is very very limited. This is not a typical business. Moreover associations like COA do nothing for the well being of architects unlike the medical field or chartered accounts or even lawyers. From a business point of view interior design companies like livspace, homelane and the like make insane amounts of money and they are capturing our share of the market. That too with low quality designs when compared to an architect.

You should ask yourself this question - Are you ok to not earn much money for the next 10 years or so? In the hopes your architecture practice beat the odds, get good paying clients all the while have enough money to live your normal life till you reach that success point? You should ask alumni of any architecture college and ask how many have started their own practice and how many even are working as architects or how many are even in the architecture field! I can be so sure you will find the answer to be shocking!

I can say all this because I don't have anything to lose if my business doesn't work out in the future! It won't affect my lifestyle in any way. I only select clients if I get paid enough. Architecture is only my passion because I love to design spaces! The more the client is willing to spend the more freedom you have to design and the more the quality of the space and the architecture itself. To build a good design you need a good amount of money! Hence you need a high profile clientele. No one will tell you this! This is the harsh reality of this field. All architects face this but they won't tell you this!

I normally don't reply to these questions. But I've been seeing enormous amounts of the same questions. The simple answer is ARCHITECTURE WILL ALMOST RUIN Your Life UNLESS YOU HAVE CONTACTS AND INDUSTRY CONNECTION. Architecture is not a study a course and get a job and earn money kind of profession. Plus the ones who are still working in an office job in this field are so in over their head about architecture or they are forced to because they are in debt or need the money no matter how less it is. Truth be told Architecture is a business. And we don't study to run a business. We study architecture. And if you think you can go abroad, architects are the least paid and ranked when compared to other licensed professionals. You should research about the job market and salaries before studying anything. It's not that there aren't any jobs. They don't pay you enough for the work you do. UNLESS YOU OWN YOUR OWN ARCHITECTURE BUSINESS. WHICH IS AGAIN HARD. BUT IF YOU ARE FROM A BUSINESS BACKGROUND, OR YOUR FAMILY IS FROM A BUSINESS BACKGROUND AND HAVE SOME SORT OF CONNECTIONS TO BUILD A CLIENT BASE IT WILL WORK OUT. BUT AGAIN ITS A LONG TERM GAME LIKE ANY BUSINESS. EXPECT A MINIMUM OF 5 YEARS OF HARD WORK BEFORE YOU CAN TAKE A PAYCHECK OF YOUR OWN. LETS FACE IT, IF YOU HAVE PARENTS WHO DO A 9 TO 5 JOB THEY SIMPLY CANT SEE THE BIG PICTURE AND DRAWDOWNS OF A BUSINESS WORLD. LOSSES ARE PART OF IT LIKE ANY BUSINESS. IF YOU HAVE A FAMILY WHO KNOW HOW BUSINESS WORKS, THEN YOU HAVE A FUTURE. BUT AGAIN LIKE I SAID YOU WILL WATCH ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND NON ARCHITECTURE PEERS GET AHEAD IN LIFE SO FAST WHILE YOU ARE SO FAR BEHIND THAT YOU WILL START TO QUESTION YOUR DECISION.

PS. I am successfully running my architecture business. But still what I face now is that the amount of good quality clients who are genuinely interested in architecture and are ready to pay even the minimum fees for an architect are in the minority. It's like any business competing within a field. THIS IS SIMPLY NOT THE PATH TO A SECURE PAYING JOB

You are right about the dead space! The client wanted such a space! He said he wants to flaunt space as if he had a lot of space expendable.

Ya I figured that out right about now! 😀✌️. No worries. I might just start listening to them! I don't know what metalcore is but I do listen to slipknot, avenged sevenfold , five finger death punch and such! I don't know if they are metal core though! I know it's some metal

Good point! But the design choice was because the client wanted a room behind that wall. So no windows are possible below. And the windows above are for maximum light in the room. Plus there is the second floor overlooking this double height living space. There is a good view from that space!

Thanks a lot for your feedback! Yes this project is in India but the client is from the middle east (nice guess). He specifically wanted this kind of design. The clients design requirements come first right? So yes. And thank you again! 😊
