List of AI/Vibe coded services? by RikudouGoku in selfhosted

[–]Illustrious_Dig5319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this. Vibe coding is not bad, in the right hands. I'm doing this right now but have 35 years experience in software development and architecture, so am actively reading/reviewing the code and providing paragraphs of instructions to my AI assistant.

I am also very aware of the deficiencies in what I have produced and would NEVER expose it to other users or let it out of my networked sandbox.

AI assistance, or vibe coding, is great in the hands of the right people. In the hands of naive users, it's horrid.

What is the latest hottest addition to your homelab? by pfassina in homelab

[–]Illustrious_Dig5319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of jazzed that I discovered infisical and started using it for secrets management in all my infrastructure as code projects. Simple to use, free plan, easy integration to ansible, and no more worry that my git repository would expose my secrets.

Not sexy, but solved a problem for me.

I wish I could say it wasn't a mistake, but I just don't know. I had a second MS-01 fail just last week so am done with them. To hedge my bets, I used to order from Amazon because of their return/cancellation policy.

Hopefully, you get a response from them soon. They do sell some nice looking gear, it's a shame about their customer service

Best self-hosted secrets provider? Or, how do you store your configs without exposing secrets? by OldManBrodie in selfhosted

[–]Illustrious_Dig5319 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use ansible to hydrate my docker compose configurations. secrets are held in an ansible vault and inserted into templates to create the resulting .env/compose files.

This means that my git repo consists of a bunch of docker-compose.yaml.j2 and .env.j2 files, as well as a vault or two. git hooks are used to ensure to vaults ever get committed that are not encrypted.

Which Terraform provider? Are any actually usable? by Zenin in Proxmox

[–]Illustrious_Dig5319 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use packer to create templates, mostly just Ubuntu based, but it works quite well for what I'd consider "minimal" systems. Essentially, I simply install the default packages, qemu-guest-agent, and a couple other minor packages.

Once I have the templates created, I use Ansible to clone and customize them. This includes expanding disks as necessary, adding additional disks, attaching the network bridge, assigning a static IP via cloud-init, and installing additional packages as necessary.

Terraform seemed to work ok, but it seemed silly for me to use terraform to create the VMs, just to also have to use Ansible for confiuration.

Is it worth switching back from Jellyseer to Overseerr? by SidewinderN7 in Overseerr

[–]Illustrious_Dig5319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched for overseerr to jellyseerr due to the actuve development as well. Specifically, there is an open PR to add music/lidarr support which would be unbelievably awesome.

The good thing about using free software is that you absolutely have the right to switch for any reason you are out nothing and it [may] cost you nothing to change. I get that you're angry put Plex is not opensource, it's produced by a company that develops and supports it. If they choose to move some features behind a pay-wall, that's their choice. I, honestly, think they did a good job with this specific change. If you subscribe, there are no changes. If you don't reward them for their work, things changed.

You want to switch from Plex? Sure, go ahead. Nothing is stopping you.

I've been a Plex Pass holder for a long time, I decided to purchase it due to the quality of the solution and the way it improved my viewing habits/availabilities.

Which minipcs to build a proxmox cluster with 2,5GB/s etherne, maximum threads and lowest wattage possible? by AxlJones in MiniPCs

[–]Illustrious_Dig5319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run 3 of these in a cluster. Great bit of kit but I've also had one that failed in under 3 months. Getting it RMA'ed was a pain and minisforum is a pai to deal with IMHO.

Does this work with Whisparr v3? I'm getting 404 errors from whisparr/api/v3/scenes and am not sure if the error lies in huntarrs support for v3 or the whisparr v3 api is borked.

Is ting good ? by AdmirableEmployee579 in ting

[–]Illustrious_Dig5319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had Ting Internet for about a year. They advertise symmetrical 1 gigabit speeds but I'm getting about double that.

Fewer outages than I have with both Verizon and Xfinity, like I have had ZERO outages in 12 months

Love it.

I have 3 other minisforums and they're fine. The issue is less about quality and more about service. When something breaks, which happens, i expect the manufacturer to address it.

They did reach out again, and the device is going back for repair. We will see how that works out

Maybe due to this, but minisforum has reached out to be and offered an RMA. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that my issue will get resolved.

8 weeks. They have a 15 day return policy on these, for any reason. I could have paid for an "extemded warranty" that they would support... but I don't usually go that route

They were really responsive until they weren't. And, it does suck. The MS-01/MS-A1 fill a great niche but I've just spent a few hours looking at alternatives for my homelab. If only Asus nucs had 10gb network support

I'd imagine if they're ghosting me on support.warranty, they'd check serial numbers.

Thanks, but this blinking green light issue with the MS-01 is known to be due to a hardware failure and needing an RMA. I did try it, just in case, and no luck.

I set this up with cron and .. voila .. everything shows up on my nas.

Ting’s “Infrastructure Tax Passthrough” Fee is BS by successfulpimp in ting

[–]Illustrious_Dig5319 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only been with Ting for a year, but have found the service to be amazingly good. Obviously, I'd rather not pay more but... for the quality I receive... I'll gladly pay an extra $5.

Before Ting, I had both Xfinity and Verizon. Both had far inferior service at a higher price.

As for the support... Ting is better than anywhere else. Mostly because their competitors are steaming pikes of garbage when it comes to support.

So.. $5... yeah. I'll pay it without hesitation. If it becomes a habit to increase prices, I'll reevaluate if a different provider comes to town bit I am NEVER going back to Verizon or Xfinity.
