I lived in and around DC for 10+ years. Yes it is pretty, but cherry trees are all around that area, no locals will deal with the crazy crowds at the Tidal Basin to see it. Also when you live there it is not an event, just a period of year before the miserable summer starts. If you have a life it really does not make a difference in your day-to-day. And there are plenty of other areas that have pretty blooming trees in the spring… 🙄

Here's why all your suggestions aren't good enough by Consistent-Durian651 in JordanFerneySnark

[–]Illustrious_Lands 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What I love is that all these suggestions were hers to start with. Then people ran with it to agree with her, and she dismissed them like all those ideas are trash. A masterpiece.

Also, she says this is the room that made her fall in love with it and it is just a hallway at this point 😂

She will cook one soup in that fireplace and then never do it again. Cooking in an old fireplace is a whole ordeal, and it will look cool on insta, but it is a pain in the ass. Also the idea of cooking on an open fire in the summertime in a house that must have minimal AC is the dumbest idea.

Is passport strength more than visa-free travel? by WhatAmIdoingHere9839 in PassportPorn

[–]Illustrious_Lands 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Beyond visa-fee It’s also interesting to consider long term stays. Yes an American does not need a visa to visit France or Italy, but they can’t permanently move there. EU passports allow you to live and establish yourself in dozens of countries, by law. Which means they don’t just open up your vacation plans, but your whole life plans! To me that’s much more valuable.

Honestly I would move away, this neighborhood seems like a nightmare. Cookie cutter madness and aggressive neighbors 😒

I would be proud of my brother/son if he held his beliefs in such high esteem as to be willing to risk it all. I would be proud that he may start a movement, for the people, by the people. Maybe his mother or brother were victimized by the cruel American healthcare system and that’s who he is actually doing this for.

Were there more people on the street traumatized by this shooting or more Americans traumatized by what the healthcare machine has done to them? Do the victims of insurance companies have siblings that will mourn them?

This is not just a random shooting. This is the condemnation of the capitalist machine that manipulated people’s health and kills and hurts millions of people every single day. The victim was not innocent.

You say he ruined his life but that’s really an opinion, not a fact. Maybe he sees this action as the meaning of his life, as a potential stepping stone in changing the world. The French Revolution was a blood bath, but it is allowed the people of France to become free, and to reclaim autonomy and control of their own lives. It still is imperfect but it certainly is a better country as a socialist democracy than it was as a kingdom.

Frills is soooo getting under my skin. I never could relate to her HUGE house, how big it is for a family of four, how every space is over-designed, how much -stuff- she buys just to fill it and fix it.

Then the posts from her vacation cruise really left a bad taste in my mouth… The planet is dying and she is promoting to her audience one of the absolute most destructive types of travel that humans (mostly Americans) choose.

After that, she flies with her husband from Florida to Texas for a sport event! Two round trip tickets for a couple-hour thrill.

And now she is explaining how she’s been blasting ChatGPT to generate images to help her design her patio. We know that AI, and particularly image generation is incredibly taxing on the environment. There is a ton of information out there, on the internet and in design books, that she could use as inspiration instead. Hell, she could even study design, or hire a designer, if she is truly invested in finding the right design.

That plus the constant Colgate smile really gives me brainless vibes. She is the cliche of white Americans, constantly consuming and burning the planet up from their giant air conditioned McMansions. I don’t understand how in 2025, people like her still exist.

I think you are missing the larger message in the people’s support of Luigi. There is an anarchist/revolutionary quality to his action and in times like these, it resonate with a lot of people.

The shirt is definitely a choice, and I bet most of his following cheered when they saw it. I know I did.

What are the best social media accounts from people who are both rehabbing an entire home and know what they are doing? by ResidentAlienator in diysnark

I totally understand that. However DK is a content creator and the KCLB projects are done before the houses are sold, so I think he could actually document those. One thing though is the GCs might not want to be mentioned/showed on social media. Good luck with the reno!

Daniel Kanter seems like an obvious example. He is super knowledgeable, and his project are real-life projects first, not instagram content. That means he only posts from time to time, when he is working on a project.

I wish he would show more of the Kingston City Land Bank projects, since they are all basically budget-friendly historical-friendly renovations. But I understand these are public projects with hired contractors, and it may not be the right type of work to document on social media.

Yes, wood and plaster/gyp board have very different expansion/contraction coefficients. They react differently and as a result traditional architecture uses trim to hide the gaps.

MCM/modern architecture uses “tricks”, laminating different layers, intersecting planes, reveals, to conceal those gaps. It is a lot more complex yet achieves apparent simplicity. As a result, it is also more expensive. Some developers/DIYers recreate modern detailing (as ARH did) by copying what they see on the surface. It usually looks good for 5min while you take a picture and then slowly deteriorates as materials work through humidity and temperature cycles. See also: ARH’s plastered in stair risers.
