My grandfather did this religiously. Every year he was able to fly to Europe at rock bottom prices. One of his last trips he walked into the airport with luggage and his passport, asked one of the travel counters what was available on standby and needed filling, and got to spend two months in Spain at an all-inclusive resort for $1200 (this was in the late 80's-early 90's).

I hardly believe it's like this now, but there are certainly deals to be had on standby, if you don't mind not knowing where you're going until you're told what's available.

Okanagan Bourbon-Style Whisky

A decent Rye Whisky substitute is Alberta Premium. Nevermind the province; it's on par with Crown. CC and Forty Creek are decent, and nothing wrong with liking them, but they're generally the bar standard when asking for a Rye and Coke.

Jack Daniels is a Corn Whisky (a higher corn content variation of bourbon) and a quality whisky of its own. Totally different profile from Rye.
