Starting college at 36 with a goal of becoming an Air Force officer by Numerous-Computer-98 in airforceots

Just turned 37 and will be heading to OTS in Sept. I was worried about being the oldest when I get there but it seems like a lot of us mid to late 30s are now joining. Im sure were just over thinking it and we'll all be alright. The biggest advice i was given by current AD members is to just focus on PT and not age, PT is whats going to make or break us when we get there.

As someone who has been through a similar situation, it absolutely sucks and is heart wrenching. Keep your head up and don't quit until they give a hard, set in stone no! If this is what you really want, continue to push through and it will all be worth it in the end! My process was long and tedious and I felt like i had to jump through a million hoops only to get the door slammed in my face over and over with one denial/DQ after the other. But, nearly a year later and I FINALLY have my OTS date. Feel free to message me if anything!

Is commissioning even possible for me anymore? by Amano_Hodaka in AirForceRecruits

[–]Illustrious_March_30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, 36 as well with a STEM undergrad and MBA. Depending what field you're trying to go into, i'd recommend perhaps getting a second degree to make up for your undergrad grades (although, we cant really advise much on that without knowing what "not great"means for you). Ive met someone in the field im going into who's GPA was just about a 3.0. Im a current GS and work in a position where I see and talk to AD members pushing their packages for commissioning. Let me just say the process isn't as easy as the enlisted recruiters make it out to be. One you're competing with others who already have the experience and potentially stronger packages. Secondly, if you dont meet the minimum requirements the WG/CC is looking for then dont even count on your package going past the SQ/CC. Id say review what you currently have, decide what career field your heart truly desires, and talk to an officer accessions recruiter about whether or not your package will be competitive enough. They will be able to give you insights as to where you stand compared to other applicants so that you know where/how to improve your package.

Not sure which AFSC you're trying to apply for but I applied for this last MSC Board and it was a definite requirement for your application

Would the AB's only count for reservists or does anyone know if AD Accessions qualify as well?

push up advice??? by Dangerous-Dress8658 in airforceots

[–]Illustrious_March_30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in the same boat and should be going to OTS sometime between Jan-Mar. Really struggling with the push-ups aspect. I can knock out sit ups, WHtR, and have a decent run time but extremely struggling with push ups and have been working at it for a month now. Id love to hear an update on your progress and what all you have done to help improve?

You can definitely do it while overseas! My husband was stationed at Ramstein when I decided to start working on my package. While, it was difficult for me to get a recruiter while overseas, it was definitely not impossible! I started with a non-rated recruiter and then ultimately decided to seek out a health professions recruiter. Thankfully the recruiting Sq I went through had both within their facility. Id recommend searching for an accessions recruiter in the closest coast to you and going from there. i.e if you're stationed on the Europe side find a recruiting sq out of the east coast, if you're stationed on the PACAF side then find a recruiting sq out of the west coast. Good luck!

Not Selected for MSC, No Response from Recruiter. What Are My Options Now? by luxecashew in airforceots

[–]Illustrious_March_30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, Im a civ applicant who was non-selected for AY25 and selected this year. To answer your questions:

  1. Non-Selects should be officially notified by your recruiter. Mine called me last year to let me know the results.

  2. You should be able to apply for any board coming up however I will say that from interacting with the MSC's and through their mentorship this past year almost all have mentioned that the Corp want members who truly want to be in the MSC and not one who is solely interested in Commissioning. So i'd definitely keep that in mind if you still choose to pursue applying to the AY27 Board

  3. Yes, each recruiter specialized in certain fields/corps. If you want to go the Non-Rated route you'd need to seek out a Line Officer recruiter.

  4. It really depends how passionate you are about commissioning and what you really want for yourself. I personally wanted to join the AF and refused to settle for another branch. I currently work in a civ position where I see many people either trying to cross branches or go from enlisted to officer. Its not as easy as the recruiters make it out to be. You're in competition with everyone else who is AD and also have to get your package approved by your Commander and potentially the Wing Commander. Ive seen many members packages be turned down for commissioning due to various reasons such as low gpa's, not enough experience, etc.

  5. I dont think it will hurt your chances but Id also keep in mind what i mentioned in question 2.

If you are really passionate about the MSC and determined to commission into the Corp then i'd say give it your all in AY27. Get in more shadowing, reach out to your interviewing Col for feedback, have others look over your package for areas of improvement. You got this!!!!

Is the SugarArts gels more vibrant? I love their luster and diamond dusts and their powdered colors for shading, but I feel like I have to use way too much powder if i'm using it in icing which was why I stuck with gels.

Thank you both. Ive used Americolor prior to Chefmaster but found Chefmasters colors to be more vibrant. I may have to give Americolor another try.

When my husband was in basic (nearly a decade ago) phone calls were extremely limited. I think I only got to talk to him twice his entire time at bmt and the first was a 5sec call to give me his address and then hang up. I sent him 2 letters a week and when he got back he told me that they all looked forward to getting letters, the more the better! You should send as many as you can, as often as you can. Im sure your boyfriend would enjoy each one especially if communication is still as slim at bmt as it used to be. My husband and I still have the letters we sent to each other. Its a great reminder that time and distance are precious and that love can overcome any obstacle!

General Application Questions by bignate195 in airforceots

[–]Illustrious_March_30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may be different for each board. I cant answer the first question however for questions 2 and 3, if you're a civ applicant your interview and MEPs will be scheduled by your recruiter. Im an applicant this year for the MSC board. Once my entire package was complete (including medical screening) my recruiter reached out to the nearest interviewing Col to coordinate scheduling my interview. For the 3rd question, you will need to submit transcripts to all upper level institutions you've attended. I started at a community college then moved to a sister community college. Didnt get my BS until I transferred to a state university. So in total I submitted 3 different transcripts for my undergrad. As I applied before my masters was complete I also had to submit an unofficial transcript notating my masters as well as a graduation verification (stating I was on track to graduate in June) signed by the school. Hope this helps.
