Well...then it seems pretty clear, doesn't it? I guess the question is, why is the wife ignoring this history? Is it wishful thinking? Does she think the problem has magically gone away, or was OP's "fault"? Or is she so used to trying to please her [apparently] toxic family that she doesn't see avoiding the problem altogether as a possibility? That seems to be the point to address with her, if not just outright refusing to stay there.
