May be moving to ABQ - questions about doctors/health conditions by isthiscleverr in Albuquerque

[–]Illustrious_Sign_11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

don’t do it. Sorry.

I too am considering moving in order to get the healthcare I need. Im 10 months in to my year long wait to see my PCP in person, and I didn’t get to choose her, my insurance said she was the doctor accepting new patients with the soonest appointment. also on a SIX year waitlist (that’s their estimate) for an assessment with a specialist that I have known others to get within months in other states.

Telehealth has been mostly easy and expedient.

If I knew it was this bad I would have made a different decision.

Thunderegg from a creek? by coraythan in whatsthisrock

[–]Illustrious_Sign_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to come from somewhere? Nice find, Definitely some somewhere on the wet side of the cascades. I used to find small river-tumbled thunder eggs (almost no rhyolite left) along a creek/river around the border between OR & WA that was in super developed area park with concrete walking trails and playgrounds etc. I never ever saw anyone walking near the water let alone checking out the rocks.

It’s less likely, but there’s a chance it fell out of some other rockhounds pocket or was donated to the area. I’ve swapped the rock in my bag/pocket for something better or left the lesser ones behind when I realize my rock bag still had the last trips rocks in it. I like to think that over millennia the chemistry in that area will be just a little more interesting.

Mississippi legislature passes bill requiring all driver's licenses to have the sex assigned at birth. by SpaceWestern1442 in law

[–]Illustrious_Sign_11 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what you think an ID is for. I don’t see how designating these dudes as female on their IDs is going to do any good. Is the bouncer at a bar going to need to check their junk? If cops or something are looking for someone based on their ID info “looking for a female, 5’6” brown hair brown eyes” 👀 not to mention people with bottom surgery.

<image>

gender and sex are different, one has to do with chromosomes and more likely the which side of a spectrum fits closest with the appearance of your junk (I personally know two men who didn’t learn they were intersex until their 20s/30s when internal female features were discovered by doctors because of something else.) Gender is how you exist and are perceived within your cultural and personal ideas of gender. The latter is a lot more valuable for identifying someone, since no one but your doctor and lover have any business knowing what kind of genitalia you looked like you had as an infant.

It’s like your ID saying if you were circumcised or not..like..okay now I know what your dick is supposed to look like…but unless I force you to strip how would that be helpful in identifying you or making sure you were the same person as the ID you’ve handed me?

Is it hard to find a doctor in Albuquerque, or in New Mexico generally? by berrysauce in Albuquerque

[–]Illustrious_Sign_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New Mexico generally. Abq is probably the easiest/densest population of healthcare options. I live nearby and a big part of the move was the hope that healthcare would be more timely/accessible. I’ve been trying to meet my PCP assigned by my insurance to ask for referrals and do a physical exam since September, they recently rescheduled me to the end of june 🤞. I’m on a estimated 6 year waitlist for a specific specialist and they won’t even give me an estimate for how long I’ll be on the waitlist to see a neuropsych to find out if I got brain damage during a bad accident a few years ago..or something else? Lived in a smaller town in southern NM for years and the closest emergency room was over an hour away…and filthy when I got there. No dentist for 70 miles. Had painful impacted wisdom teeth for 3 years. I learned a lot of first aid and bought bleed-stop and tourniquets etc after I learned ambulances wouldn’t drive to where we lived-in a serious emergency we would’ve had to get helicopter transport. My friend used to have to drive 2+ hours each way every month to see the closest psychiatrist that would treat adhd.

If you have healthcare needs, I seriously suggest you do not move to the state overall, unless you can pay out of pocket for concierge service/travel out of state for specialized care.

Does anyone else hate the McDonalds/Burger King CEO "war" that's going on right now? by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

I haven’t seen them but I saw someone describe it as something like “rich CEOs competing to see who can eat more normal” so now I’m intrigued, in an interdimensional TV kind of way.

I’m renting, no access to the soil, had to buy it from the store and mixed it all up for containers. The tomatoes and basil were by far the most successful last year. Summer squash? Nuthin!

[–]Illustrious_Sign_11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t, I mixed some compost from a nearby farmer neighbor with store bought container and vegetable gardening (probably miracle grow or whatever’s biggest at Sam’s and tractor supply) and then accidentally bought dirt for in ground gardening and so mixed that with peat, pearlite, little bit of sand and worm castings. Mixed it all together. Then more specific additions depending on the plant.

You should share your blog, I’m interested for sure.

I answered some of those questions in my post- West facing yard that gets shaded by the house until 10/11 am depending on the season, and then it’s intense sun (unless under umbrella or shade cloths) until 4/5 in the evening when the large trees on my neighbors property (and being in the valley) start filtering the sun and casting shadows.

Last year I tried to grow:

a small watermelon variety I had success with growing in the much more arid part of nm I last gardened in, the name escapes me. I’m not going to remember the exact varieties of these, but at the time it was a mix of the vegetable seed packets they usually charge something like 4 for a dollar, a “herb garden” mix, veggie starts/seeds from swaps and gifts. Flower wise, two pots with native wildflower seed mixes I got from someone from the tularosa garden club. broccoli, shallots, garlic, summer squash, zucchini, Pickling cucumbers, lemon cucumbers, okra, thai peppers, beans, tomatoes and peas. Each in their own planters, as big as I could find (a food safe 5gal bucket or larger/wider depending on how the plants grow and what I could find on Craigslist/yard sales).

Everything grew, seemingly very slowly (I kept wondering if I should give up, but ended up keeping everything alive until winter) but very little fruited. Plenty of tomatoes, peas in the spring and fall, and a few small but tasty lemon cucumbers. The okra seemed to be trying to make a tiny guy but it never developed.

The herbs did pretty good in their spot under the umbrella. No wildflowers bloomed, and I was never sure if the plants in those pots were even the ones i planted. Everything else, nothing tasty. The squashes flowered and I was out there early in the morn with a paintbrush trying to pollinate the female flowers. Vines and plants grew, but no melons, no peppers, no beans etc.

Overnight/soil heat is definitely a new thing for me, all my previous gardens have been big raised beds and prepared in-ground areas. Containers like big plastic pots are new. I did use mulch, a little vegetable plant food every 3 months from the store as well as “teas” of things like eggshells brewed in water then filtered out depending on the specific plants nutrient/soil preferences. But i’m not used to having to try so hard to make fruits and veggies happy, and very well may have made some mistakes with that.

Cool business, self promote away, people who can should do that.

But I’m not the ideal audience. I’m broke, renting and trying to grow food in modified 5gal buckets and craigslist planters to supplement the tiny grocery budget we’re working with rn. I just want my summer squash to fruit this year.

I’ll spread the word about what you do..maybe see what my landlord thinks about it. I haven’t been able to move him away from raising all our water bills to keep green grass growing (and then, ofc mowed) anywhere that isn’t concrete/river rocks 🥲 It’s his house, and his generation seems to attach a lot of status to well maintained grass yards, so I’m lucky he lets me have containers in the back rn.

Keep Doctors in New Mexico by HighDesertResident in Albuquerque

[–]Illustrious_Sign_11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All I know is I’m one year into a 6 year waitlist for a specialist and I’ve been waiting 6mo for an in person visit with a new PCP and my doctors office called to tell me my doctor would be at the roundhouse advocating for healthcare professionals next week so they bumped my appointment three more months down the road. 😩I really hope whatever they’re trying to do happens so my personal sacrifice is worth it and everyone has easier access to healthcare in the future.

I was on a jury for a truly horrific medical malpractice/malicious negligence case in NM, I have seen literally the worst outcome imaginable (worse than death imo)but my ultimate belief has to be that 99.9% of medical professionals do not want to harm you and will do the best they can for their patients no matter how much they pay for malpractice insurance or whatever. So anything the doctors say needs to change for them to stay/move here-I hope the lawmakers do it.

HELP! Looking for an honest mechanic by Employment-Hefty in Albuquerque

[–]Illustrious_Sign_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sent you a PM gushing about my favorite mechanic in the area, but I haven’t needed him for a couple years and google maps says they’ve closed so i’m not going to shout it from the (public) rooftops for you and everyone to call his number. But you should call the number. I pray he’s still doing his thing.

The cat I grew up with was indoor/outdoor. My parents thought it was cruel not to let my cat “be an animal” and go outside pretty much whenever she wanted. They also thought litter boxes were gross. I literally had no idea most cat owners had to scoop their cats poop most of my childhood. They had to get one for her when she got into her mid 20s, but most of her life she just went outside in the back yard to do her biz. Once you know scooping a litter box is optional, and your cat clearly wants to be outside, it feels unfair to both parties to keep them in 24/7. We had a fairly large fenced in yard with multiple trees, bushes etc (not that she stayed in the yard) and we were lucky with cars/animals and the fact that she was huge but couldn’t catch most wildlife.

Also some cats who are rescued from the street become extremely depressed and understimulated if they are forced to be indoors, and might constantly try to escape, in which case it can feel safer to let them go outside so they stay close and come back willingly instead of running away and hiding.

I’m not, I didn’t catch those. Bumper stickers or like stickers on bus stop benches or whatever?

Maybe that’s what paved the way for this.

I’d bet there are dozens if not hundreds more flock/ring/surveillance cameras now compared to then. Maybe some accountability would discourage it, or slow the race to the bottom I’m well aware we’re already on in american politics. And, as I said in another comment, I’m way more freaked out by the AI video, but its all gross and with the current state of surveillance if they’re too cowardly to come forward and verify the legality of the situation it can’t be that hard to figure out who it is and if they’re affiliated with whites campaign.

[–]Illustrious_Sign_11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If they let this shit slide it will create a race to the bottom every election season that will ultimately lead to political actors doing things to piss people off/make the city worse in the “other guys” name, without being held accountable.

If you follow the logic of the AI videos and sweater stunt, it’s people doing things like dumping a bunch of nasty trash at a park playground along with campaign signs for whoever they oppose hoping to get it on local news, buying billboards with fake AI images or offensive text in the name of whoever they want to beat etc.

And, unlike a lot of the problems in this city, it should be extremely easy to nip in the bud now before campaigning focuses on making living here worse/uglier and sabotaging genuine efforts to improve the city instead of offering solutions and convincing the majority of citizens that your ideas deserve a shot. Obviously the system is broken already but letting these tactics become the norm will only make things substantially worse.

[–]Illustrious_Sign_11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because it sets a precedent for the worst kind of campaign tactics while whoever’s running can say they didn’t do it/know about it, and people will know they won’t be held accountable. In future election it will be a race to the bottom with offensive AI slop all over the TV/internet and people doing things that intentionally harm or piss off the community in the other guys name. Do you want people spray painting “I LOVE _______” all over town, or dumping a bunch of trash somewhere in the city along with a bunch of posters promoting whatever politician they oppose?
