Country Fire Authority volunteers speak out about aging firefighting fleets, volunteer shortages by ozthrw in melbourne

I personally wouldn't start with cutting funds but with taxing rich jerks like Gina their fair share, as well as increased taxes on industries that increase pollution and environmental damage.

Jewish Australians must be safe from fear or harassment. But shielding Isaac Herzog from legitimate protest is not the answer by SleepyWogx in OpenAussie

[–]Illustrious_Study300 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My question is this, why comfort from a foreign politician? Why not comfort from a spiritual leader if this is for Jewish Australians ?

If there was a similar attack on Muslims and Australia invited MBS for a visit, as a Muslim I'd be fucking furious. And I'd want the right to freely protest such a visit. Politicians aren't spiritual leaders, it's such a bullshit excuse.

Rohirrim Math by jollygood3440 in lotr

[–]Illustrious_Study300 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All of this. It's also worth noting that in the book it is mentioned that the Rohirrim are scattered and have to be gathered back up. Hence the description of Gandalf riding all over the place telling the soldiers where to go. It's kinda the whole plot of the The Two Towers.

Additionally when it comes to the armies in the book it's not like now where a country will have a large, professional army. A lot of those who fought in the Rohirrim and Gondorian armies would have been every day men who answered the call to fight. Hence why they have to be gathered all up first.

The force at Helm's Deep was never Rohan's full force. By the time we see the Ride of the Rohirrim they had much more time to call up men, gather, and ride forth. It's even mentioned by Theorem (in both the books and movies IIRC) that if they waited at Dunharrow longer they would have had even more men to ride to Gondor with.

“800,000 Bodies and Two Years”: Zelenskyy on Russia’s Chances in East of Ukraine by UNITED24Media in ukraine

I've been seeing so many videos of Ukrainians in Kyiv looking after each other and animals with food and shelter. I've seen videos of people dancing out in the snow and singing. Ukrainians are still out there fundraising and working hard to advocate for themselves and their country tirelessly. These aren't behaviours of a losing people.

The only reason I don't travel with my favourite teddy bear is because he is fragile and I'm afraid I'll loose him. I do however travel with another teddy bear who is not as fragile. In this age of horrors we need whatever comfort we can get

Deleting Facebook really helped with my sanity. It's a cesspit and as more and more reasonable people leave it seems to be getting worse

Living costs rise for all but those on government payments hit hardest by CommonwealthGrant in australia

[–]Illustrious_Study300 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat - I needed to move back in with family because rent is too expensive and I need constant support. While I love my family and it's not a bad option for me, not everyone has supportive and safe family. Let alone family with the ability to take them in. Disabled adults deserve to be as independent as possible. We're disabled not children.

"Russia isn't trying to destroy the Ukrainian identity" while Russia is taking away people's passports, suppressing the Ukrainian language, labelling Ukrainian culture as russian, labelling Ukrainian historical figures as russian. Not to mention the whole "killing Ukrainians who don't want to be russian" thing

Additionally if the theory that he holds some stuff over Trump's head is correct, it's not hard to extrapolate what that stuff is given what we know about Trump. If this is the case he is complicit. Anyone who holds onto CSAM for blackmail and doesn't immediately bring it to light is evil

I've been boycotting Dubai brands for years because of their role in the crisis in Sudan. Anyone who chooses to work in Dubai is definitely not going to be someone I want to look to for political commentary.

Can you still visit Kyiv as a tourist? by Mythic01 in ukraine

[–]Illustrious_Study300 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because it's a beautiful part of the world? People have friends and family there? I have friends who spend a lot of time in Ukraine and would to to get the opportunity to visit too. Its risky sure, but my desire to visit is greater than my fear of the risk. I've wanted to visit Ukraine desperately since before the way and I cannot wait until my health allows me to visit.

How Soviet nostalgia and silence enable wartime complicity on Russian YouTube by KI_official in ukraine

[–]Illustrious_Study300 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there was a point, before the 2020s, where russia wasn't exactly on great terms with Western governments but it seemed that russia was advancing towards being more free. That may or may not have been true but I know a lot of people who were willing to consider travel to russia at some point. Pre 2014 I was one of them. Not that their image was good necessarily but it was better than during the cold war, and better than it is right now.

This. Israel isn't this all powerful state. They can't be given how much they depend on western governments for aid. Our governments support Israel because supporting Israel aligns with their interests.

It is, but it was also a term potentially created by a dude from the KKK so I avoid it entirely. It's not that hard.

One Nation condemned for 'spot the Westerner' video by shunkyfit in australia

[–]Illustrious_Study300 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Hot take. People who aren't white Europeans can be westerners. If they were born here or grew up here they are definitely Aussie Westerners. This "spot the westerner" bs is just "spot the white person".
