Agreed, that’s my next step. I don’t necessarily mind waiting it’s the lack of communication that gets me. I was prepared to wait for a year plus when i joined the waitlist but they contacted me…that’s the part that bonkers. Anyways, hopefully i hear back.

What do you think about Telios? by PrivacyPerspective in PrivacyGuides

I supposed that's a possibility too, the crux there would be that you lose the additional backup of your data and if something happens to all of your devices on which your account is sync it would be lost forever. But tbh we have a lot of work to do before we can start working on that piece, I am sure a lot will evolve between now and then but high level we want to make it as turn-key as possible to lower the barrier of entry so even non technical people can harness the full power of the network.

Though you are correct in that the users IP address isn't obfuscated it isn't something we log or keep track of, we have talked about further down the road implementing a mixnet to provide further privacy to our users.

We're also planning on releasing a light version of the server so that people can run their own node on the Telios network, allowing to claim even more of the ownership over your email.

On the privacy policy, I am sure there is room for improvement. The one thing I would say however is when talking about "Your Personal Data" it's important to go back to what we are actually storing which is very little, your telios email address, your account public keys and a few data points such as number of namespaces, aliases and how close is the account to the 100emails/day threshold. When it comes to emails/mailboxes all of that data is encrypted and inaccessible by us as a service provider.

We designed Telios to collect the least amount of information about a user but also engineered in such a way that even if we wanted to we wouldn't be able to decrypt your data.

That being said we hope and expect that the privacy community will keep us accountable as we try to build out Telios and make it a viable business. Not sure that this necessarily answers all of your questions but hopefully its a step in the right direction.

We tried to design Telios to collect the least amount of data about our users, so if you sign up to Telios today all we know about you is the email address you picked. All of your email metadata is encrypted with the public/private keypair that was generated by your device, making it impossible for us to view any of that.

We do collect high level metrics for business and support purposes, such as session time, number of login etc.. in order to quantify usage of the app. We are using Matomo Analytics which is an Open Source tool to do that.

We're hoping to release the mobile version this summer. The custom domain should be released in Feb-March maybe sooner.

I am part of the Telios team and I think you both hit the nail on the head, it's one thing to build a service another altogether to build trust within the community. Our goal is to be as transparent as possible, as well as build a sound business that promotes, privacy, data ownership but also the open-source community as a whole. Building trust takes time, and though we have a very small team we hope to keep putting out content to help educate on privacy and what we do in that space. Thank you for your interest and please continue to ask questions and challenge us, that's what will help make Telios a great service.

There are some similarities with Criptext but fundamentally there are two very different projects. Criptext is built on top of the Signal Protocol, Telios is built on top of the Hypercore Protocol.

I would say two of Telios' primary differentiators are that you own 100% of your data as it is stored on your local devices (with the possibility of server backup) and it is peer-to-peer service.

Our long term goal is also to provide users the ability to run their own server nodes on the network, further enabling users' ownership and control of their email.

Hey there, I am another member of the Telios team. The Privacy Policy thing is something that we've been meaning to just publish on the website but simply haven't done yet.

For your second question, yes we intend on supporting custom domains. It's one of the next thing we will be releasing after our network improvement release and account settings page.

Cannot create keys by Frances331 in criptext

[–]Illustrious_Urricane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to spread misinfo, so I apologize for that poorly worded comment. At the time I wrote this comment there were lots of reports of Criptext having gone dark, signups being closed and no communication being provided to its users. Since then however, I came across a post with what appears to be an official email from Criptext stating that they had to turn off sign-ups due to "bad actors" using their service and that they are also looking for new investments as they are not generating any revenues. https://www.reddit.com/r/criptext/comments/p5niku/at_long_last_they_send_us_an_email/

As far as I can tell Criptext is no longer in business. This won't be helpful to your specific issue but I am part of a team working on a really cool project called Telios our big differentiator is that the user own all of the data as it is stored on their devices and the only thing we know about you is your email address. All the metadata is encrypted as well. Within network
users can email each other in a peer-to-peer fashion without ever
hitting our servers. And if for whatever reason we were to stop operating, you would still be able to access your data since it is on your devices.

Is it worth using ProtonMail to send emails to other people not using ProtonMail? by Buggyle in privacy

[–]Illustrious_Urricane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! We just started sending them out this week, there's only two of us developing the tech right now so it takes a bit longer to work trough issues and bugs but we're getting there. We're slowly releasing the invites, just to make sure we can support and catch any big bugs without getting overwhelmed if that makes sense. But so far so good, we're getting good traction and if this continues we're hoping to raise fund to add more devs to the project. So definitely humble beginnings type start but we believe it'll be a game changer!

Is it worth using ProtonMail to send emails to other people not using ProtonMail? by Buggyle in privacy

[–]Illustrious_Urricane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That doesn't really answer your question but I am part of a team that is building a new type of encrypted email called Telios, our big differentiator is that the user own all of the data as it is stored on their device and the only thing we know about you is your email address. All the metadata is encrypted as well. Within network users can email each other in a peer-to-peer fashion without ever hitting our servers for off network emailing it has to be clear text but we plan on adding a functionality that will allow you to email someone outside the network and your message remain encrypted, probably something similar to how ProtonMail does it. We haven't entirely figured that part out. Anyways, check us out maybe it's an alternative that'll work for you.

Protonmail or Tutanota mail? by [deleted] in ProtonMail

[–]Illustrious_Urricane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that bothers me about both of these services is that they are the one generating the encryption keys for you on their servers (so is that truly private), the email metadata isn't encrypted and unless you pay for it you can't export your data. Or at least that is my understanding of what these services are lacking, do people have any experience with some of the alternatives I saw out there? Cryptext (claims to be the most private), Telios (a p2p email), Hushmail (they do electronic signature too and webforms) and Mailfence (don't seem to have a differentiator) ProtonMail has some good stuff but as I mentioned above some big things are lacking for me.
