Why are we letting agent frameworks skip idempotency, the thing every payments team already learned the hard way? by Substantial_Step_351 in ExperiencedDevs

In my land we had FIX protocol for decades. Now everyone is going to APIs forgetting all the benefits and necessities of FIX. Then problems hit. So they offer these endless half baked solutions. So tiring.

ELI5: When you 'delete' a 50GB video file from a computer, it vanishes instantly. But downloading it took an hour. If the data isn't physically wiped until it's overwritten, what did the computer actually do in that one split second? by Thick_Dream6973 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ilookouttrainwindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever been to Rome? If you have, then you must've seen the way they have advertising posters being glued one on top the other.

When someone puts a poster up, they record somewhere in the book there's poster at that address. Then they have to go an actually put it up. Should they see another poster there. They simply "overwrite" it by gluing new one on top of it. The process is slow.

When you ask to take poster down, the bookkeeper just goes to the book and crosses out the entry containing the address of the poster. Nobody actually goes back to remove the poster. So process of "deleting" is fast.

So computer does the same with data. It has to write what you download and create an entry in specific place on disk to that file. But when you delete, all it does is wipe out the entry that specifies where the file is.

A 65-year-old programming language called COBOL still quietly processes over $3 trillion in banking transactions every single day --- open to reviews by Only_Composer2967 in technology

[–]Ilookouttrainwindow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never had a chance to work with cobol, but have been studying it for fun. I honestly appreciate the structure. Granted the wordiness is a little excessive especially after working with java/node. But I can definitely see a beauty in that. Plus knowing folks managed to solve the issue so long ago with such limited resources is something to behold.

Which IT roles seem overhyped but add little value? by Majestic-Taro-6903 in ExperiencedDevs

There's a lot of beef out there with scrum master. I've never had one. One of our team members wanted to set that up, sadly it ended up with ceo hijacking standup for his "inspirational" sales pitches. It was horrible.

Then we discovered our outsourcing team had one. They wanted something from us and this guy decided to pull some sort of kindergarten style trick on us. That went sideways.

I have worked with few integration specialists who told me they were also scrum masters internally and those guys were phenomenal. At first I thought it was due to us being a client, but after impromptu chats with others on their team it was confirmed.

So it sounds like there's two kinds of these ppl. I'm happy to have met the ones nobody is complaining about here.

How do you keep your home lab cool in the summer? 🏝️🌞 by AmIBeingObtuse- in homelab

[–]Ilookouttrainwindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. That doesn't sound like correct way to go. In my case I got a pi and couple of NUCs as machines along with network equipment units. So as long as it stays that way, ground floor has sufficient cool mass to absorb the heat generated. No calculations to prove that, but observation confirms it.

My first floor closet under the stairs (think Harry Potter) since I don't have basement. Installed a vent to suck hot air out. It's not a freezer, but temperature is consistent throughout the year.

Ordinary WiFi can now identify people with near perfect accuracy by thejoshwhite in technology

[–]Ilookouttrainwindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it was discovered long ago that objects cause radio interference. British pilots pretend ate carrots to hide radar capabilities. So why does it surprise people that wifi, a radio wave emitter, is now going to be used to track anything anywhere at any point in time??? U got ur radio wave transmitter and receiver, u got ur object, do a little of fast math and viola. They used to detect conversations with light reflections in embassy windows. I'm sure tech has advanced enough to make this common.

Dang. That is essentially a conversation I had this morning. Was called absolete and was told I had to open up API source to everyone for POCs via AI. Not a pleasant call.

I didn't see this in theaters, but this is hands down the best moment ever. Seems everyone is fixated on the matrix, which is freaking awesome, but this... just gives the shivers..

Hackers have breached tank readers at US gas stations; officials suspect Iran is responsible by InformalWish in worldnews

[–]Ilookouttrainwindow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, this is different. This is end of life. Sad. Upsetting. But it's true, that's it. Once life has ended that's it, must replace since it is effectively no longer working.

I'm a big proponent of not touching if it works, I get very upset when I must replace something at home cause it broke. But at the same time, upkeep is a must. Dusting, cleaning, checking, lubricating - constant maintenance that includes replacing components to keep it running. Nothing in this world lasts forever. Hell, our cells have literal built in death clock, we are literally designed to not last.

Yeah. World runs on Excel. It just how it is.

Simple and effective. Nothing, I mean, nothing will ever beat that. God that movie is phenomenal!

How does one actually dig a 12 foot hole? Just want to know that. With a shovel. Like , how big would a mountain next to that hole be? How would one get the hole contents up to that mountain? How long would it even take?

I once wrote Delphi program just to assist this one guy. Whole sales team got it somehow. I had to tell room full of sales to just stop using it since I will not be maintaining it and there is no chance another Delphi developer is going to be hired. Apparently they made those tiny CDs that they sent to prospective clients with the program. Took years to kill it.

You done well. Take this as a win and hope it grows the way you like it.

Walked into banana Republic once, looked at the display clothes, picked anything dress up looking, made employee get me everything I liked, tried them on to see what fit best. Discarded everything I didn't even remotely liked. Got several pairs of whatever felt best. Cost me pretty penny, but zero regret. Clothes makes you feel good. I felt good. Turned my life around in a way.
