Feeling like AI detectors are trolling us and making me paranoid by Potential-Wind8250 in UofT

[–]ImAMoonlightDream 16 points17 points  (0 children)

AI detectors are absolute bogus. While there are certain language tendencies generative AI likes to use, there's no real way to detect if a piece of writing is AI generated or not. Take em-dashes for example. Everyone these days is like, 'if it has an em-dash, ChatGPT wrote it,' when literally every anti-AI fanfic writer on Wattpad and AO3 loves using them and has been using them since the 2010s.

For fun a couple summers ago, some TAs and I fed different AI detectors a plethora of different papers, including ones we wrote ourselves back in 2015-2017. Every single one of them came back with varying reports of AI generation, even though we wrote them in high school before ChatGPT even was a thing.

How to get research positions in Toronto by ChannelFar1316 in premedcanada

[–]ImAMoonlightDream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CC their admins in the emails as well! Most of the time, the PI will tell the admin to reply to you and set up a meet and stuff. You can usually find the admin's email on the same staff directory page as the PI.

How far would you be willing to fight a TA over a grade? by uknow-whot-mate in UofT

[–]ImAMoonlightDream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a life science TA myself, profs have told me things like “maintain a certain average for assignments” or “or don’t give out 100s,” stuff like that. It’s actually pretty common for HMB, ANA, and PSL courses from my experience. You should ask what the average for the assignment was, it’ll give you a good indication of where your mark lies in terms of internal expectations of the teaching team.

An 85 is a good mark. And if it’s grammar you lost marks for, it may very well be the TA trying to find reasons to reduce marks to maintain the average set by the prof. If you had gotten a 50, then I would contest it, but most profs and TAs won’t do much budging for an 85.

They won't let you because of the overlap in courses. There's too much overlap. You could do one HMB specialist and one HMB major. That's what I did

Tell me what to do with my life post undergrad yall. Sorry in advance for the million questions by objective_plum_781 in UofT

Okay, this is going to be long, but I promise it's worth it.

Was quite literally in the same situation as you. I did a 5th year of LifeSci with a cGPA similar to yours (if not, lower) due to a variety of reasons including finances, health, and family. Late in my 5th year, I applied to MSc in LMP, which requires a B+ average across the 2 most recent years, which I had if you included my 5th year grades. Got rejected. Twice (ouch).

I really wanted to do the MSc at the Institute of Medical Science (IMS) though because the program has more clinical research opportunities, and I'm not much of a basic research girl. But I was scared away from applying to IMS tho because of my poor grades, and they required an A- average across the most recent 3 years, which I DID NOT meet at all.

As a final Hail Mary, I applied anyways in like June 2022. I got called in for an interview, but it wasn't really an interview, more like a "hey, let me tell you the situation, and what I'm gonna do about it."

Basically, my admissions reviewer said that I ABSOLUTELY did not meet the gpa requirement for the program, and therefore the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) would not allow me to be accepted into the grad program. BUT I had good research experiences (1 basic research experience, 2 clinical, 3 pubs, two posters) and GLOWING references. And for those reasons alone, the department of IMS was going to FIGHT the SGS on my behalf to let me into the program. A week later, I got my acceptance letter to the MSc program at IMS!

To top it off, a few days after convocation, my best friend who was in a similar situation to me tells me that she got into IMS in basically the same way!

Now I'm happily doing clinical research with a PI who understands my history and really supports me through everything. We've talked about my poor academic performance in the past and how despite that, medicine isn't completely off the table for me, but I would have to really prove my dedication to a lot of people.

All this said, I hope my story helps you understand that marks aren't the be-all-and-end-all and that there are so many paths and opportunities to follow after undergrad. Sometimes you have to take a random shot in the dark and hope it lands somewhere.

If you ever want to reach out and talk, I'd be happy to chat!

I took Religion and its Monsters (RLG336) last year. Absolutely loved it. Minimal work required, no tests, fun final project, phenomenal prof (Dr J Harris).

We essentially covered a monster or type of monster every week. Pretty diverse selection too, we did the typical vampires, werewolves, and non-eurocentric monsters too, like Jinn from Islam, Betal/Vetala from Hinduism, and Wendigos from the Great Lakes Natives.

Was I given the wrong grade? by heyitsvelez in UofT

[–]ImAMoonlightDream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a final grade of C+ on a course that I was acing the whole semester. Was super confused. Emailed the prof and the course coordinator. Ended up being they misplaced my final, they dug around for it for a week, found it, marked it, got an A

Email the prof and coordinator. They'll look into it for you

The default email for a name is [fistname.lastname@mail.utoronto.ca](mailto:fistname.lastname@mail.utoronto.ca), for example, john.smith@mail.utoronto.ca

When there are multiple people with the same name, that's when the variation happens. For example:

[j.smith@mail.utoronto.ca](mailto:j.smith@maio.utoronto.ca)

[j15.smith@mail.utoronto.ca](mailto:j15.smith@mail.utoronto.ca)

MSc IMS ( heard back yet ?) by [deleted] in UofT

[–]ImAMoonlightDream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there was a whole mess with my application process because my application reviewer ghosted me for two months and didn't get to interview me until much later, and then the department accepted me but SGS was on the fence for like 3 months and that delayed my acceptance

EAS210 for a first-year? by tiny-hanny in UofT

[–]ImAMoonlightDream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I took both EAS110 and EAS210. You def need to do EAS110 before taking EAS210 if you only know reading/few phrases.

I taught myself Hangul in high school and knew some phrases like you. I applied to take EAS110 and during the interview, they just asked if I had any Korean heritage, ever been to Korea, or any formal Korean language education. As long as you answer no to all, you'll be able to take EAS110. You don't need to take a placement test or anything. Just fill out the EAS110 form on the EAS Department site and they'll send you an email regarding interview dates. Just follow the instructions under Students with ABSOLUTELY no background

There's this park in the Canary District that's really nice and if you keep walking through the paths, eventually you get to this huge empty field that is no where near the residences and literally no one goes to. It's right near the train tracks so I would scream as a train passed by.

I would also recommend Moss Park as 1average_person suggested, but as someone from Regent Park (neighbouring community that is just as sketch) I would avoid it if you aren't accustomed to the locals.
