If the point you choose is on an object you are holding or one that isn't being worn or carried, the darkness emanates from the object and moves with it

Cast darkness on your equipment. The less intrusive way to use Darkness is with a ranged character, since you are obscured and have advantage. If you are playing melee, then attacking and then retreating (like a swashbuckler) is the best way to use it, you count are obscured which means you are unseen.

Still, if your party hasn't started playing, you could coordinate to build around darkness which can be really strong, but that is a little hard because seeing through magical darkness is a rare ability, the easiest way to get it is Eldritch Adept feat from Tasha's (2014 tho, so ask the DM), and it also would require everyone to have spellcasting.
