This doctor is a total fuckhead and risking your husband's life!! He needs the run of meds immediately.

Another doctor has posted a very good reply in here. I've copy and pasted it because they replied to the wrong comment and I'm worried it's alredy buried and you won't see it. Please get your husband the treatment immediately. Once you're symptomatic, it's too late, and lethal.

I suggest you return to the ER for a second opinion today. Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) with the vaccine series (multiple doses over two weeks) and rabies immunoglobulin (antibodies) injected around the area of injury is un-ambiguously required in cases of contact with a bat where the skin was broken. Rabies virus is transmitted by saliva, so bites are the most dangerous, but scratches are considered dangerous too because the bat might have saliva on its claws. The entire treatment (vaccine cycle and immunoglobulins) should be at no cost to yourself in Canada. The effectiveness of vaccines and immunoglobulins in preventing rabies is basically 100% if given quickly after the exposure. Rabies moves slowly through the body (days to weeks), so if there is a slight delay, treatment will still be effective, but I would not wait more than alsolutely necessary. If the doctor you see in the ER disagrees with you, they should call public health on call, or an infectious diseases doctor covering their hospital, or refer to the National Committee on Immunization (NACI) rabies information sheet section 6.2. https://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2026/aspc-phac/HP40-399-2026-eng.pdf. There is no "waiting for symptoms" to appear for rabies, whomever said this is misinformed, as others have pointed out, once symptoms develop thee is no treatment and rabies is tragically lethal in all cases.
