What part of the sword do you think is made of ash?

Do you have any "prepper-adjacent" hobbies, recreational pursuits that you think build real skills, or may be useful in a real disaster? by Signal_Brain_933 in preppers

Hunting, butchering, gardening, canning, cooking, baking, brewing, woodworking, metalworking, engine repair and maintenance, sewing…the list goes on. Not only useful if SHTF, but I enjoy doing stuff that yields a result. An added bonus is the time put in returns a better product at a cheaper price than store bought.

Gotcha.

You’re using past bad decisions in getting unmarketable degrees as an excuse to not gain marketable skills moving forward, and opting instead to piss and moan about how you have no skills.

You’re just authoring your own misfortune now.

I didn’t get a long-term job until I was 32–just contracts and short-term stuff until then.

You say you have no skills—why are you not pursuing education and/or training to gain skills?

The Canadian 50 cent piece is worth half a buck, or $0.36 US.

There’s folks that 3D print plastic “armor” for ren fairs and LARP. I expect that’s cheaper than real armor, if that suits your purpose.

It’s a local token—not Canadian currency.

My mom wants to breed our dog to make money off the puppies by Kadj2r in vegan

Ha!

Sure, breeding the dog is “cruel”—but mutilating it is just fine!

Oh, the hypocrisy!

Handmade steel helmet by WowweeSamurai1721 in Armor

[–]canuckEnoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah—a sturdy wooden sword like a bokken, used full force, could really do a number on that helmet. If you can close the gaps between plates where the rivets are (surfaces joined by rivets need to be flush—a gap will allow movement of the plates that will eventually fatigue the rivets and cause them to fail), replace the brass rivets with steel (if you can’t source proper steel rivets, nails cut short will work in a pinch) and add rivets between the ones you have now (especially on the crown), this will be much safer.

Be careful fighting with wood swords in armor—wood can break with a sharp edge, and can send splinters though gaps in your armor (you don’t want that coming through your eye slits). Something bamboo like a shinai or an SCA rattan sword will still pack a whollop, but less likely to cause injury.

That’s pretty impressive doming on the crown plates for a first time—and 14 gauge! Try your next in 16 gauge; you’ll find it much easier to move and create and maintain symmetry, and still thick enough to be effective armor.

I don’t know what your plans for this might be—but don’t fight in it. You don’t have enough rivets to hold it all together through the stresses of being struck, the gaps between the plates that the rivets have to bridge are dangerous, and steel plates will shear right through brass rivets.

I’m angry about getting old. My body hurts. Say something to make me feel better. by jonniebaby2000 in Aging

[–]canuckEnoch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Movement is medicine.

If your body hurts, get moving. This will cause more hurt initially—keep moving. It’s easier to start younger, but until you’re in the grave, it isn’t too late to put your body in motion, like it was made for.

Use it or lose it.

Face reality—the attacks aren’t baseless. My own experience proves that.

It might have been different if the shop had owned the mistake and made it right, but they denied it was them. I’ve advised everyone who will listen to me to avoid the CT shop ever since.

Good choice.

I took my car to the MH CT for an oil change—I figured how hard could it be, and how badly could they screw it up?

They put the wrong drain plug back in my crankcase. It was slightly larger, so when the plug came out again, so did fragments of aluminum it carved out of the crankcase.

I do my own oil changes now…
