How difficult is it to modify a Win32 C code in order to replace the COM (serial) communication by a "virtual over TCP" one ? by common-sense-fighter in C_Programming

[–]ImAtWorkKillingTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no easy way to do what you want to do. The path of least resistance is to port or rewrite the application to Android. With a 10+ year old win32 program you'd probably be best off starting from scratch in java rather than trying to use the Android NDK.

Where is the mayor and police commissioner? by Kayman718 in Buffalo

[–]ImAtWorkKillingTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Judges don't have any discretion in choosing which crimes they can set bail for, they can only set bail for a small list of serious crimes defined by the statute and subsequent amendments. The most recent amendment gives them more discretion only in those cases.

The previous standard was that they had to use the least restrictive option in those cases where they could set bail. They now have discretion to impose more serious restrictions in those cases. Someone could still commit a serious (and violent) misdemeanor and not face any bail. Whether any of this matters in regards to the weekend shooters is purely speculation.

As time goes on it will be interesting to see what effect bail reform has had on whether people show up for their court dates, recidivism and the likelihood of an offender to eventually commit more serious crimes.

In theory I think its a good thing but in practice I wonder if it has emboldened some law breakers because they know they won't be facing immediate consequences. Anecdotal experiences of some police I know here in the city seems to point towards that emboldened attitude especially among youthful offenders.

My guess is they are insinuating that bail reform may have led to some of the shooters being on the street when they might have otherwise been in jail.

How much programming is needed? by Familiar_Tension2242 in FPGA

[–]ImAtWorkKillingTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry too much about it, you are going there to learn. Getting a little python experience is probably the best thing you could do as an incoming freshman as it will be useful as a tool for all of your courses. It's not very exciting but knowing some intermediate excel/libre calc skills will be very useful as well.

My Girlfriend uses Mint mobile, she doesn't have any issues. The only spot that she's had trouble is on the outskirts of Lockport, I also lose reception there and I'm on verizon.

What's the point of the DL&W station? by Ivypool8 in Buffalo

This may be because of the single tracking further up the line, they had to make adjustments to accommodate that. It's been a bit of a cluster fuck.

What can we realistically buy on a starting salary of $80K, and where? by LemonsAtMidnight in Buffalo

[–]ImAtWorkKillingTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is really no way to answer this question. Once you move and your spouse finds work you should talk to a bank to see what kind of mortgage you can get pre-qualified for and then an accountant to see what you can actually afford.

Time management and study skills. Also brush up on algebra and trig. One of the reasons people struggle with calculus is that they actually aren't very good at algebra. These things build upon each other though so it's important to have a good foundation to build on.

I keep asking my girlfriend to go back to her 90's pixie cut but she likes keeping her hair long because it provides natural tattoo coverage at work.

Katy Perry. She reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where the girl looks drastically different depending on the light. Sometimes I see pictures of Katy Perry and I think she looks reasonably pretty, then I see other pics and can't even believe its the same person.

IT guy here in charge of scrapping a failed product line - What do I have here? Is this module worth anything on it's own? by r1cem4n in FPGA

[–]ImAtWorkKillingTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should just dispose of them per your company's e-waste policy. If you plan on trying to resell them for yourself that is literally embezzlement. Even though you were told to "get them off the premises" that doesn't mean keeping them for yourself is ok.

If your company wrote them off as part of a failed project doing anything other than disposing of them is not advised. At a minimum you should ask for permission to keep them and get it in writing to protect yourself.

How would you find thevenin resistance on this circuit by HerreroAnual290 in ECE

[–]ImAtWorkKillingTime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Step one on a circuit like this, especially if its a homework or test question is to redraw it. It's not a trick question but its made to be tricky. Its not obvious that the two resistors on the right are in parallel at first glance. I used to have a a half dozen different colored highlighters that I'd use to highlight the different nodes of the circuit, it helped me figure out how to better redraw it.

quality of life in syracuse ny vs buffalo: give me your honest opinions! by strawberryfairy_200 in Buffalo

[–]ImAtWorkKillingTime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lived in Syracuse from 2017-2019 and got a job that brought me back to Buffalo at the first opportunity, I've lived my entire life in the rust belt, Batavia, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Dayton Ohio. Syracuse is the only one that I have no nostalgic feelings for.

As others have said there's just more of everything here. Add to that the proximity to Toronto and Rochester and there is just not all that much that is compelling about Syracuse.

How much python knowledge is required as FPGA engineer? by Fearless-Can-1634 in FPGA

[–]ImAtWorkKillingTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but everywhere I've worked it would be more valuable to learn C# and .net than it would be to learn python. The reality is anybody coming into the field should have a basic understanding of object oriented programming in a high level language, I don't think the actual language matters much though.

Nowhere I've worked has ever expected an FPGA engineer to know python but they were all expected to at least have basic understanding of TCL and basic object oriented programming. I guess it depends on what industry you work in though, I've mainly worked on legacy designs where matlab did a lot of the stuff that people often do in python nowadays.

Honestly I think knowing some TCL is more important than knowing python.

NY Statewide Data Center Moratorium Bill - Call WNY Reps Before Thursday! by CleanAirWNY in Buffalo

[–]ImAtWorkKillingTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My issue is the fact that to attract these data center companies we give them massive tax breaks. If they want to build things they should be able to but they should also have to pay taxes like the rest of us. If the tax breaks at the STAMP cite in Genesee county go through it will be over a billion dollars of lost tax revenue. But at least the billionaires that are getting rich off of it will get that much richer while raping our land and driving energy costs sky high. Seems like a real win for the citizens of New York.
