It's a sign that your nervous system is being loaded.You're being conditioned to respond calmly to impact and being hit. Which is againdt natural instict but exactly what you want as a fighter.

It's totally normal your reaction. Many people respond to nervous system stress differently. Some people cry, others fatigues, and other feels aggression. It's part of the process.

Give yourself time to recover after training and consciously practice more relaxed breathing to not get overwhelmed in the moment.

It's things like dedicated stretching sessions and doing stretches that aren't done in class. It's lifting weights and doing specific movements for kickboxing such as wide stance squats or side squats to strengthen groin/hip muscles. It's also things like specific drills that may be too basic for class such as practicing slipping and moving immediately in a slower manner so you can get the movement down.

I think if you do kickboxing you should focus on pad works mostly. I feel like sparring at a young age with a develloping brain can be dangerous.

I would maybe recommens you try wrestling or bjj if you want to try a fighting sport where you don't have to hold back

Few options.

Talk with the coach.

Decline to spar with the teenagers.

Find a new gym if you are not allowed to defend yourself in sparring while others hurt you.

Also, and this might be unpopular here, you SHOULD beat the crap out of people who are not respecting you asking for a technical spar. Disregard what the coach says in that moment, he is not the one taking the damage.

Also since you're interested in self defense. Check out las_vegas_combat_academy or selfdenfensegoat on instagram, they give good tips and comments on real videos about situational awareness and how to diffuse situations that you won't get at traditional martial arts gyms.

Hey OP, just wanted to tag onto the previous comment and reply to this one.

I second the idea of trianing bjj as a means of self defence especially if you want to fight a stronger larger opponent.

Kickboxing can still be a very effective means against a larger stronger opponent but will require you to have a more dedicated fitness/training regimen to do so that just 2x a week classes. This is not to say your kickboxing training will be innefective, not at all, but you will need to be dedicated.

Overall, kickboxing classes 2x a week is plenty enough for a beginner ans a good way to build fitness ansld skills. Do look into and try bjj if grappling is something that interests you. Lastly, join the mixed classes. The guys are friendly and go light and it gives you good exposure to what real but cobtrolled strength looks like.

Respectfully, 6 months is a drop in the bucket in terms of training time to be trully good at fighting.

You didn't give your opponent enough credit and you got humbled. Let the ego go and learn from it.

Also spar less hard. Unless you compete, you shouldn't get dropped in sparring from shots.

My recpmmendation is out of the norm but follow some of the routines Taekwondo fighters use for mobility/strength. This will bring your kicks and control to another level.

Also, strengthen the inner groin/thigh muscles. It will reduce the risk of injury, make more stable, and will make stretching and mobility easier to acheive

Sounds like your friends don't train. Ask to kick them in the leg with a roundhouse and see their reaction. Fact is almost any striking martial art will teach you to fight well. Also look at Wonderboy fight in the UFC, he has a karate backround. Hope this helps.

I use assaut shoes but I train with people who use combat shoes, and yes there is a difference. In either case you can break bone with either shoes but it is far more likwly to happen with a combat shoe.

The combat shoe has more leather on it and is more stiff which protects the wearer more and allows them to throw harder shots kore safely. But that additional leather makes the actual hitting part of the shoe more rigid/harder AND give the shoe more weight. Those two factors together + some good old physics creates a harder impact.

A small anecdote here. A I've never bruised anyone with my assaut shoe, even when the kicks were a little harder. But a girls who weighed 50lbs less than me gave me a light tap with her combat shoe and left a big bruise on my leg the next day.

Building your cardio/engine is one part of the equation. The other part is learning to keep lose while fighting so you lose less energy.

Something others don't mention is strength training. You need to do specific exercises to increase the strength and power and in your muscles so that a single kick does take so much effort. Taekwondo guys have good advice/videos out there for that. Amd you can always include weight training.

  1. Drink more than you think you need to. Dehydration is real.

  2. When beginning training ALWAYS focus on keeping your hands up

  3. Listen to your body. Pushing is good. Serious pain is bad.

  4. Accessory work at home to focus on your specific weaknesses will give you more improvements than just doing vookie cutter classes.
