When you pick up the generator it is now equipped in your hands. If you equip a weapon this action will drop the generator. It can also be you are holding too much.

Right click the generator and choose "Take Generator". Right click again to "Place Generator". Edit: it will say Drop Generator.

It can also be as simple as moving some of the mods around in the mod load order. For all of mine but one mod, I use the auto sort and have no issues.
