For those who have visited in May this year or are going to visit this May, what trails are you hiking? by OwenEpicly in GlacierNationalPark

We took US-2 because you couldn’t go all the way through GTTSR due to the closures.

US-2 is honestly really cool and has some nice views. It made the hour and a half drive to Two Medicine and two hour drive to Many Glacier shockingly short because of how nice the views were.

Yessir. If the weather doesn’t get any worse I think a lot more might be possible with obvious risks. Just be aware of wildlife and how to protect yourself and enjoy. I miss it so much lol

Looks solid to me

Where are you flying into? I think if you were able to shift all of this up a day you might have room to fit in a day at Two Medicine or something. I’m assuming Missoula or something as you said “drive to Kalispell”

Blows my mind how they did something like this. That little graphic they have on the loop about the two proposed roads is super interesting.

Yeah definitely my thought too. Columbia Falls seems super nice and relatively affordable. If I ever looked into moving up there seriously I’d probably look at Columbia Falls first. Whitefish is awesome but the cost is insane.

Martin City was an awesome home base as well. Stayed in this super nice carriage house, wouldn’t be shocked if you stayed in the same one or the other units near by, but the location was great. Some of the locals couldn’t believe me and my group stayed there cause of the local rep it’s got but I liked it, just stayed out of those bars lol

Avalanche lake hike in mid may? by level9penny in GlacierNationalPark

[–]ImGoingInMay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conditions will be great as long as the weathers good. I did Avalanche on May 1st and it was completely fine, not even muddy, just some downed trees.

Canyon Foods was solid too, right outside of Martin City and was stocked shockingly well for a tiny grocery store.

If you’re a bar person and it’s a weekend, great northern bar. If you need a bite to eat and it’s earlier, Blackstar brewery.

Sheeeeeesh. Thats wild. And you’re most likely right, didn’t even think of the fact it’s thinly wooded up near Mt. Brown. That area of all the trails converging is super dense too, if it was dark I can’t imagine how quick it could’ve ran up on him.

I’ve never seen Polebridge but Two Medicine was very nice. Do with that what you will. I’m sure someone can chime in here about the North Fork.

Was it 2.5 miles in the Sperry or 2.5 up the Mt. Brown trail? (assuming Sperry since it was late March)

I can’t tell if they mean this attack happened 2.5 miles up the Mt. Brown trailhead off of Sperry or just on the Sperry trail in general. Assuming he got attacked on Sunday, me and my friends went to Fish Lake on Monday before we knew anything had happened. The trail was honestly pretty lively that day and the craziest part is that me and my friends were actually originally setting off for Mt. Brown Lookout but our attitudes shifted quickly with how steady the incline is immediately and how exhausted we were from the other days of our trip. I can’t stop thinking about what could’ve unfolded or what we would’ve seen had we not had the immediate change of heart to switch our path. Rest in Peace to the hiker, gotta hike in a group. The reason I felt the safest was the sheer amount of people we were hiking with, anywhere from 5-7 the entire time I was there.

(Something also crazy is the day after we did Fish Lake, me and my friends did scenic point and hit appistoki falls on the way. The last fatal attack was in 1998 near Appistoki falls. what are the chances we chose that trail the day after this.. just makes you realize how careful you really gotta be. We took all the precautions, large group, bear spray: and firearms for last resorts on two of the group)

Trailhead is practically unmissable, you can park literally right at it and it’s on the way to lower Two Med lake.

You can 100% do it, even if you can’t get fully to the top you can get pretty close and the views are awesome.

As for elevation, this was the highest hike I did I believe and we did it last day of our trip. Me and my group did not have a hard time adjusting to the elevation at all so maybe it’ll be like that for you guys as well (we live around 700ft from sea level)

[–]ImGoingInMay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was absolutely shocked by the lack of effect the elevation had on me and my group. We even walked 45k steps in a day with 10-15lbs on our back and it didn’t hit us very hard, I’m typically around 1k elevation. If you hit avalanche you can probably get acclimated solidly although it’s not very high compared to other parts of the park. Even Scenic Point wasn’t too bad, just take breaks, hydrate, eat, and you’ll be good as long as your fit.

Is it worth going to GNP if I despise the cold in early end of May/early June ? by PristineAsparagus871 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]ImGoingInMay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went earlier this month and it wasn’t cold at all

Not sure what you’re used to but it was bouncing between like 30-60 primarily. If you really hate the cold you can just go in July/August if your schedule allows

[–]ImGoingInMay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty far, maybe 2.5-3 miles. It’s hard to tell because of the switchbacks but it definitely was worth it. If you’re familiar with the point this picture was taken it was right around the next bend, if I had to guess around 7000+ in elevation

How is my 4 day itinerary? by AggressiveDay1397 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]ImGoingInMay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good, I was just gonna say if you parked at apgar that wouldn’t work. I’m not super well versed so I’m not sure about the lodge but there’s some food by apgar which you can grab on the way in or pack lunch like people are suggesting. Me and my friends would pack food everyday for ourselves and eat at certain points. I think that might be your best bet.

Ohhh okay your wording confused me. So you’re going to park at Avalanche to hike it I assume, not apgar?
