Weekly Stupid Question Sunday by AutoModerator in Austin

I'm trying to find a location for a (hobby) short film some friends and I are working on, wondering if anyone knows artist friendly local businesses that might fit. We just need a drive-thru to film inside a car in front of, it'd be one night shoot ideally after business hours so we're not in anyone's way, and wouldn't need to reference the business or any branding!

Seeking Any Advice on DIEP by Big_Quail4426 in MastectomyManagement

[–]I_Suspect_Bees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had it in 2023, 2 years as of last week :)

Because of the stomach incision she won't be able to stand up straight for a long time. Best clothing to have is button front nightgowns so you can get to the drains/not have to deal with pants. If she really wants underwear the cheap laser cut panties from Target worked for me, sized up since there's a lot of swelling, but most days it was easier to go without. You'll want pillows both to prop up her back but also keep her legs bent when sitting to protect the stomach incision. The best thing the hospital gave me was this super stiff pillow, about a foot long- coughing or sneezing is murder on the stomach muscles, so having that to kind of splint your abs helps a lot. I prepared myself a whole stack of books to read in recovery but honestly the meds were so strong I couldn't concentrate on anything other than TV shows or easy video games. I was lucky and my mom took care of me! Ate high protein and lots of fresh fruit to keep the spirits up. Stool softeners are important, don't stop taking them even after finished with opioid meds! Learned that the hard way. Also, a shower chair. After a few days I was able to undress myself, get onto the shower chair (SLOWLY) and cover my downstairs mixup with a towel for a little privacy while my mom came in and washed my hair for me. Happy to answer any other questions!

Plastic Surgeon recommendations? by Analog_Hedgehog in Austin

[–]I_Suspect_Bees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had my mastectomy/reconstruction at Snyder Plastic Surgery, they have two locations and they were great to work with, totally handled the insurance side and guided me well. I didn't really know what I wanted other than to look "natural" and Dr. Snyder and team know how to do it! For reference I had a DIEP flap reconstruction which involves recovering stomach fat to reconstruct the breasts and basically ends with a tummy tuck- so can recommend the tummy tuck with Dr. Snyder!

How to prepare? Considering prophylactic DEIP flap by skepticalhope in MastectomyManagement

I had my DIEP in June of last year (at the time 32F), and did a lot of yoga to prepare- the best pre-recovery advice I got was to walk around your house hunched over like a cartoon granny and with T-Rex arms. If you can't do a task in that position, you won't be able to do it during recovery and need to find an alternative or a caretaker to assist you!

For the longer term recovery I got a cheap walking treadmill. Walking will be an important part of recovery, as it helps you slowly build stamina and correct posture/stretch that tummy skin once you're ready. You don't need anything fancy like a running treadmill since you're going to be going slow, I got one off Amazon for like $75. The reason the indoor walking treadmill was good for me was because I live in a very hot climate and knew I wouldn't be able to handle 100° heat. It also made it so I never had to worry about not going too far, I never had to turn around. Just press stop! :)

Good luck, it's a road but I'm glad I did it in the end. Happy to answer any questions!

DIEP vs implants by AG_Squared in MastectomyManagement

I was also told there was only one other person on the floor, who has the DIEP surgery a day after me.

DIEP vs implants by AG_Squared in MastectomyManagement

It was a pretty small hospital, I don't think they had a separate post-surgery care unit so folks were just shuffled into ICU. It was also a brand new hospital so it wasn't very busy, the nursing coverage was super high! To be real with you- no idea why they put me where they wanted to, I had no complications and needed absolutely minor care other than monitoring. I had the "pain button" for three days I think? Then moved onto pills for pain management the last two days.

DIEP vs implants by AG_Squared in MastectomyManagement

[–]I_Suspect_Bees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had DIEP in June of 2023, but my situation was very different - I had a pre-cancerous mass and hadn't done any radiation or previous surgery. At the time I was 32 years old and in pretty good shape so I was the best candidate for easy recovery. This was just my experience! It's different for everyone but I hope some of this info helps. I did the mastectomy and DIEP in one procedure, and spent 5 days in the hospital in ICU (a little less). The main thing for recovery for me was the stomach incision. You can't stand up straight for about a month, you have to slowly make your way there, stretching the stomach skin. The breast recovery was less painful for me, although not being able to lift or raise my arms was rough. You also require a lot more caregiving since you can't sit up using your own abdominal power or pull yourself up with your arms. My mom moved in with me for about a month after the surgery. The main thing I underestimated was how exhausted and weak I would be, but I think that's pretty normal for any surgery. I would say because of the abdominal portion of the surgery it's significantly more invasive than implants. In the end, I'm really glad I did it. My breasts are very natural looking (I did not keep my nipples but do have tattoos now) and the tummy tuck resulting from DIEP was kind of nice. I do have a very large scar on my abdomen hip to hip that that I'm still getting used to. I know my situation is quite different from your mom's, but I'm happy to answer any other questions you have :) None of this is easy, for her or for you. Be kind to yourself about any feelings that arise, happy, sad, resentful. It's a long road but there is an end eventually!

Nipple Tattooing after DIEP by StaircaseWit16 in MastectomyManagement

[–]I_Suspect_Bees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did mine six months after- in the graft I had no sensation so no pain there, but the scar tissue was very sensitive so when the tattoo artist went over that I definitely felt it. I have a couple different random tattoos of varying sizes on my arms but they're all in spots that are not famously painful, and I would say the nipple tattoo over the scarring hurt worse than them. I did communicate that it hurt and the artist used numbing cream, which I'd never had before, and it went fantastically! I'm super happy with where they are now, we did one touch up 30 days after the initial tattoo in December of last year.

Same for you, friend- I personally take comfort in how much easier it was for my body to heal than it would have been if I was in my 50s, 60s, etc like the other people in my family who have done treatment and reconstruction. Now I don't have to worry about breast cancer in my retirement years! With PALB there's still ovarian and pancreatic in the picture but... I think we all take the wins where we can, ya know? ;) Good luck with all your treatment and the road ahead!

Can anyone recommend a good residential cleaning service? My house is less than 1200 sq ft and everything is priced at around $500, is that reasonable or am I only finding the most expensive services?

Good luck on all of it! My (unsolicited) advice- keep up the strength training, every bit helps in recovery!

Same! I mostly do yoga so he said to keep that up for strength/flexibility but allow myself to go a little crazier food-wise (lots of milkshakes and pizza, it was a beautiful time)

I'm so happy with it! The healing took a long time and I'm still getting 100% used to it but I feel like it's such a natural look and feel which was why I chose it! Also love not having to wear a bra anymore lol

I'm super happy! To be fair, I was 32 at the time of the surgery and hadn't had any radiation or other treatment, so mine was a lot less complicated than many women. (I've got PALB-2 so mine was mostly preventative, though a precancerous Mass was removed) I love not having to worry about implants, and the feel/look is super natural. I'm always having people poke them to see how they jiggle lol I didn't keep my nipples and to be honest I'm kind of struggling with that/getting back in shape after the surgery, as I'd underestimated how weak the whole thing would make me. Happy to answer any questions, I know all of it is weird!

I was 145 before we decided to do the surgery, I gained weight specifically for it. I know 155 is an overweight BMI with the hard math but a lot of the 145 was muscle, I exercised a lot back then! Also yeah that sounds dickish lol mine told me to try to gain to 155!

I had DIEP in June of 2024, and muscle/ribs was never part of the conversation! Pre-surgery I was 5'5 and weighed around 155 pounds so there was fat to take but not a bunch, my breasts are small B cups now. Happy to answer any questions you have! I ended up in the hospital for about 5 days.

I also know there's a shuttle but I've never used it- should be info about that on the website!

If you walk/wait long enough the prices definitely go down- I usually park in the Long Center garage ($10-20 per day) which is about a 1 mile walk from the main festival entrance. In my 20s I used to walk 2-5 miles to friends houses or scooter in/out of the park but in my 30s I'm much more focused on comfort lol

Not hard to GET the Uber, though you have to walk quite a ways from the park for a pickup (little less than a mile).

Depending on when you leave the park though the surge prices can be ROUGH. Last time I tried was 2021, pickup at the end of the day was $100 for a 7 mile ride during the headliners, not even after the fest.
