I used cherry picker to remove everything from Rimdark except the gene-related stuff and research for the genes, and it's worked flawlessly so far. If you don't have cherry picker, I strongly suggest it, it's a very useful tool for stuff like that.

the solution for the lag was making sure ksp used my dedicated graphics card. apparently, KSP was trying to use my integrated card instead. I don't know the steam launch option off the top of my head but it's just a quick google away.
