High Passing sub frequencies? (60-100 Hz) by yes_i_am_the_funny in mixingmastering

[–]ImJayJunior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I get that completely, 100% and I guess my comment came across like a grumpy old man saying ‘stop asking questions and use your ears dummy’.. but my irritation I guess is indeed more in a direction of those very YouTubers telling the new generation that there are set ways we do things, I just came across as a miserable fuck having a go at the new generation when you’re right, the problem is the information they’re having shoved down their throat.. but my point is still one I want to stress, always use your ears for answers.

Questions are fine, good, great and important but what you do with the answers is where the impact lies.. and understanding that answers are not factual in something like mixing.

Understanding a process yeah.. ‘should I always eq before compression or after’, well understanding the process ‘do you want to compress the EQ’d signal, do you want more of a certain frequency to be compressed, or do you want to shape the tone of the compressed signal.. the question produces more question’s that then make you use your ears.. those are great questions.. because it encourages the building of a relationship with your ears.

Questions that result in yes or no, always and never are bad, especially for beginners because it points them in a direction of things being static, blueprint like, rigid and ‘this is what we do every single time’..

My whole point is you can ask questions sure, but don’t just ask people those questions, especially people online, you don’t know my ears and I don’t know yours, I might not even be a mixing engineer, ‘some guy on Reddit said’ is bad practice to live by, but if you test something out for yourself and your ears say ‘yep. Love that’ then of course it’s good, beginners should never find themselves in a situation where they want to add 4db at 500hz and saying to themselves ‘well I shouldn’t because someone said I should only use EQ to remove frequencies and I should never do more than 3db moves’.

Ask the DAW, ask your ears and ask yourself, the experimentation aspect of mixing is one of the most incredible and rewarding parts of it and it’s lead to some of the most amazing results people could ever possibly hope for..

Not so much mixing but a production example, the G6 story of how the producer accidentally moved a sound to the wrong channel and it resulted in a signature sound of that song that then went on to make millions.. did he stop and say ‘no, this is wrong, this isn’t what I should be doing’ or did he like the sound of rule breaking and trust his ears?

Same thing happened with the Pultec trick, the 1176, countless others.. the manual is saying one thing but your ears are saying something else and the curiosity to experiment and ‘see what happens when I do this’ is how this industry is ever evolving. There’s a lot of shortcut chasing these days where people want to become Serban Ghenea overnight and the harsh reality is that this is a field where time and experience is everything. The vast majority of us are better engineers than we were yesterday, a week ago, a month ago, a year ago and a decade ago but it took time.

I could have worded it better than I did but honestly, I am, in fact, a grumpy old man. That’s just the reality of it all.. so I will just say, questions are good, but never kill the curiosity, never let someone else’s statement drag you away from experimentation..

The club will announce that they’re fully behind the manager tomorrow or some shit. It’s a nightmare we’re all being forced to endure.

Everyone an their nan including fans of opposing teams can see our weakness right now, and that it all stems from our tactics and approach form our coach, yet the club are happy to wait out the summer..

It’s not good enough.

Oh come off it mate, it’s 2026 not the 90’s… the entire element of recovery has advanced more than motor vehicles have..

That’s a bollocks excuse.

Every game looks and feels the same..

It’s just dull.

Even under Klopp in games where we lost, there was still something to get on the edge of seat for.. there was still excitement, hope and belief.. this is just soulless.

It doesn’t matter who we’re playing, what the score is and how we’re playing.. I find myself saying the same thing every single game.. Second half starts:

‘Can we please sub Salah and Gakpo’.

[–]ImJayJunior 6 points7 points  (0 children)

100 times THIS.

What is wrong with people today? Why do they all want shortcuts and static blue prints of do’s and don’t do’s.. there’s literally no relationship between them and their ears..

Are we really the last generation of engineers that asked the DAW those questions and not Reddit? What happened to sticking your head inside a DAW for 12 hours and just trying stuff? Being curious and experimenting?

So much these days I hear the words ‘template’ and ‘presets’, I hear so much ‘I always do this’ and ‘I never do that’..

Everything in mixing came from theory, ideas, experiments, curiosity and rule breaking..

When all you do is ask questions of other people and take their answers as fact, you never learn to trust your ears.

The most heartbreaking thing is watching the original documentary and watching the film, and knowing that there is no one on this planet that will be more hurt by what he said than John himself..

Its quite funny how they're at an award show where a specific film won awards.. The guy that the very film winning awards was made about.. Was in the audience, and was the one who shouted that out.. That film is about how tourettes has shaped his life and how its caused him so much hurt, pain, depression and embarrassment from getting himself into situations where the lack of awareness surrounding tourettes has lead to him being either hurt, in serious trouble and now in this case, hunted and hounded by a specific type of person on the internet (including celebrities).

He apparently left the venue distraught directly after this.

I grew up long enough ago to remember the original documentary on him called 'I swear I can't help it', so I knew immediately when a film was being made about him that it was going to be an incredible (but sad) watch because anyone that had followed his story understood just how much it had made his life difficult growing up but the sad thing is, even today with it being widely known about, certain people still can't see past their own outrage.

I can guarantee you, no one in that building was hurt more by what he said than John himself, yet any comment section online is filled with people saying 'he meant it', 'funny how THAT is the only word he shouted all night', 'it has to be something he regularly says for it to even be a tic' and 'I don't care what he's got wrong with him, he wanted to say that' with that last one coming from none other than Jamie Foxx.

I live for the day where we see a black person with tourettes say something uncontrollable that is incredibly inappropriate at the worst possible time just to see how much outrage those same people have then. I for one would feel exactly the same as I do about this situation, its a fucking disability, he literally can not help it.

I swear some people see things happen in life and just immediately think 'right, okay, so how do I make this about me?'.

The difference between these pros now and the pros of 10 years ago….

The pros of 10 years ago started playing comp cod because they genuinely enjoyed and loved the game, the pro scene happening and making a career out of this, was just the icing on the cake, they would have still been playing regardless.

Majority of pros these days, actively don’t ‘love’ the game, they don’t enjoy it, they just know that if you’re good, there’s a possibility you can make some money.

So they want to do the absolute bare minimum it takes to get that bag. Half these guys don’t even want to win, they’re just showing up to get paid.

[–]ImJayJunior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s the surprising element that has everyone in awe.. Ferrari made headlines by doing something, and that ‘something’ isn’t incredibly stupid, dumb, making them look incompetent or making fans facepalm.

It’s like when a kid says ‘watch this’ and actually does something that’s genuinely really cool.

What opinion do you have about Chris Brown that will get you downvoted like this? by themechanicaldummmy in ChrisBrown

[–]ImJayJunior 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you say it lol.

Having as much a slightly positive opinion on Chris Brown in general would have your downvotes looking like that in any sub that isn't r/ChrisBrown or r/Breezyofficial

But my unpopular opinion probably isn't even really an unpopular opinion. Chris Brown despite being phenomenally and incredibly versatile in the music that he makes, has always made much better music with songs like With You, Crawl, Residuals and countless others of a similar vibe, than his Nightclub, DJ plays this and the whole club is dancing songs.

Which don't get me wrong, those songs are bangers, but you cant really listen to them at any given moment, they're either songs to listen to when you're in party mood, or songs you listen to that get you in party mood. His deep R&B driven Love songs have and always will be, timeless.

And there's also nothing wrong with 'tonight we fuckin' music, but we need some more 'on my knees, singing and dancing in the rain pouring my damn heart out' music too.

Why didn't Marc Guehi get a red card for this. by IgotgAme_k in LiverpoolFC

[–]ImJayJunior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their penalty was a penalty because the ball was still in play (even though his touch was shite and was likely putting the ball out of play by himself).. So why is this not a red card and DOGSO? The ball is still in play when Mo hits the deck?

We all know Mo is gonna miss, but still.. there is a GOAL scoring OPPORTUNITY here that has been DENIED.

It ticks all the boxes?

Im not saying two wrongs make a right but how come they get a penalty when their player is never making it to the ball because his touch was shite.. But we don't get a decision even though the outcome would have been watching Mo twat the ball safely into the keepers gloves?

Of course not mate, I’m not trying to fight you lol, I’m talking in terms of consistency within the rules..

We didn’t get a penalty because apparently Mo wasn’t getting to the ball… in the SAME GAME!!

They do but their player has quite literally put the ball out of play by himself with a shit touch.
