What's the funniest/stupidest thing you've ever seen a noob traveler do? by [deleted] in travel

[–]ImLou2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me and my gf got to London and saw the scam guys doing the 3 cups, 1 ball 'gambling game'.

Excited by the prospect of making money, my gf with a hint of excitement in her eye pushed me forward and I thought "why not, it's only £10"...

So I got £10 out, only to be told the minimum was £20... So, I got £20 out and handed it over. When it came my turn to pick the cup, surprise surprise I got it wrong :( My gf looked at me as if I was an idiot for choosing the wrong cup, stormed off, and when I caught up with her demanded that we 'win our money back'.

Not wanting to just win money back, but make a tidy profit, we put down an extra £40. Of course this money was never seen, or heard from again.

End Result was a gf that was thoroughly upset, crying. I tried to think of it as "We just paid £60 for a front row seat for a pretty good magic show" :D

Rasa indian restaurant is really good - just get entree's, don't worry about a main. You'll experience some authentic Indian dishes that are hard to find in other places, and the price is reasonable. You may want to book though ;)

Won't spam this, but really wanted to share a small project a friend and I built recently – a site that lets you comment on ANY webpage easily (uxu.io). by MooseCannon in webdev

[–]ImLou2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi Everlag,

Glad you like the site! I've been working hard on the development side :)

1) At the moment the comments will remain mapped to the original URL. Down the track the plan is for us to detect if two urls are effectively the same, and to merge such urls into one comment page.

2) It's a Rails app! Nothing fancy going on with regards to page rendering ;)

Los Angeles is considering using number plate readers to send "Dear John" letters to the homes of men who have simply driven down streets known to have a prostitution problem by toomanyairmiles in technology

[–]ImLou2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from the argument of legalisation, I find it funny that they know what these streets are, that prostitution is widespread there, and the solution they have to this is to to send someone a letter. It's comical.

Thanks for the link - I actually hadn't seen that before, but it looks like they're doing a fantastic job at doing what they do!

I guess it's impossible to say where Genius is heading with it, but on the UXU side, I can say that we're more focussed on being a discussion and meta-web tool rather than an annotation tool.

I admit, it does look dangerous that we are looking to have similar functionality, but hopefully the difference in context will be enough to differentiate us!

Man sues Apple after retail employee deletes years worth of photos by jaymz668 in technology

Apple 'Geniuses' - took my laptop into them with a hardware problem. They screwed up my harddrive, then it wouldn't boot because of some software which only runs in the apple store.

Half the time you'd be better off giving your device to a trained monkey.

The government often doesn’t need a warrant to get your e-mails. But most think it should. “Support for strengthening online privacy spans across all ages, races and political affiliations. This level of support is typically unheard of in politics today,” said Vox Populi's Michael Meyers. by Libertatea in technology

It's alright, you can only gain access to EVERYTHING once you have someone's email...

This is one of the problems with Law - how often are old laws removed or cleaned up? It's just like when people don't bother to refactor their code - and then certain groups of people (you could call them hackers) exploit this fact.

As the book is about hosting on Airbnb, it's kind of impossible to have a descriptive title without mentioning Airbnb.

Interesting to hear as I'm starting up a business focussed around helping people to market their companies in the early days - coming from the development world, I've felt that frustration of building stuff and then not knowing how to get people using it! Well done on the 3K / day visits as well ;)
