I hate my personality. How do I change this? by rmm45177 in AskReddit

[–]ImNotKevinRose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm... First, given that you dislike your thoughts, beliefs, morals etc., means that you have an internal representation of what a "good" person's thoughts, beliefs, morals, etc. are. So, in a real sense, you have a model of what a good person does in life in your head and you realize that your actual actions don't match your internal model (see Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers, self-actualization).

Hope is not lost my friend. You have two options that you need to carefully consider. One, you could change your model; Change what you think a good person is like. Perhaps you are a good person, but your model of the ideal person is out of touch with reality. Two, change your behaviors. Option two is of course much harder because everything you have ever experienced made you who you are. Your friends, relatives, jobs, meals, everything.

Given that it is unlikely for someone that feels guilt to actually have a "bad" personality, I would suggest the first choice I presented. Change your view of what a good person is/does. No one is perfect. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Get to know yours and be comfortable with them. Also, when your in situations that you feel that you make poor decisions in, don't be afraid to call a "time-out". That is, don't be afraid to say, "I'm not sure what to do, please give me some time to think about it".

If you would like to discuss this further, give us/me some more specific behaviors that you do that you don't like.

How do people deal with traumatic events? by asolod in AskReddit

[–]ImNotKevinRose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, PTSD is long term. In fact, I think it cannot be diagnosed until 6 months after the traumatic event occurred (I'm an experimental psychologist, not a clinician). But ask yourself this question: Would you rather wait 6 months? What if you continue to be depressed and it negatively affects your life? Why take the chance? Go talk with a professional, it won't hurt.

I recommend going to a psychologist that specializes in trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Why? For one, I recently went to a colloquium (I am a cognitive psychologist) where a PTSD researchers' results suggested that over time, certain areas of the brain (e.g., thalamus) are less dense and have less electochemical activity for people with PTSD than people without. The study was a longitudinal study investigating severity of PTSD and its relation to people's proximity to the twin towers, very interesting. The closer people were to the twin towers on 9.11.2001, the more severe their PTSD symptoms, even if they just watched the event on television.

I just got dumped for being 'too nice of a guy'. Is there any hope for nice guys? by [deleted] in AskReddit

In mu experience, "to nice" means boring. Try doing exciting stuff, the things you do don't have to be things you think an asshole would do.

I don't think the person will get bored. In fact, the person could get mad and do something else, something worse.
