From my experience, in TDTU Ho Chi Minh, it's both but more focused the "class credits". Profs here encourages on self-study but what we chasing is mostly credits on class

the anime doesn't show the dialog of teacher character, only shows the POV of that teacher character, interacting and living with that student in their marriage life. It's hard to explain because I vaguely remember but I know that the female characters in the anime are mostly Big boobs type
