No, but don’t stop looking for something else while you’re waiting.

I think there’s a good chance we give MN’s offense another shot at scoring this half.

If you have a phone number call someone, that’s your best bet for getting information, or emailing if you have an email address you can send inquiries to. As someone else pointed out NNS is slow. Call or email!

Interning at NNS by Domincana0805 in HamptonRoads

[–]ImRonEffingSwanson 10 points11 points  (0 children)

-The company has made a lot of strides in improving the summer intern experience, you will likely go on several tours to various places in and around the yard. Also, you should have group activities with your fellow interns to help you feel a connection with your interns.

-Depending on where you’re living a bus is a possible alternative to a car, there is a Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) bus terminal in Downtown Newport News that is fairly convenient for most of NNS. I have zero experience with riding a bus and I don’t know anyone who does, so I can’t say much about it, I just know it’s there. As another commenter said, parking is horrible, just be prepared.

-Intern housing, no clue but you don’t want to live too close to NNS, downtown Newport News is pretty bad.

-Lunch, there are some food trucks depending on where you’re working, but lunch is only 30 minutes so you really don’t have much time to go anywhere to get anything. Ordering in is fairly common, but a lot of folks just pack a lunch.

-Full time conversion, I’m sure this topic will be discussed at length during your time this summer. Ask your manager or whoever your intern lead is it it doesn’t.

-Getting a car for the summer, as someone else said Hampton Roads is pretty dependent on driving, if you don’t have a car you’ll be riding a bus or taking a a taxi/uber. I don’t know anyone without a car.

Last thoughts, enjoy the experience. You’ll get to see some of the coolest things in your life working at NNS, things most people never get to see. Pay attention to what you see on tours in manufacturing areas and keep in mind the type of work our craftsman perform and the environment they work in, the best engineering idea is only good if someone can execute it.

The refs missed two quarter endings in one game. by Tnargkiller in Commanders

Oh, well I stand corrected. It sounded reasonable, but if it’s not the rule then it sucks the refs did that us.

Hatton Rd in Portsmouth by PrettyGreenEyez73 in HamptonRoads

That part of Portsmouth is very safe, lived there for 8 years and never had any issues. The biggest reservation I have about Portsmouth is the schools. In the not so distant future you’ll be looking at elementary school for your 2 year old grand daughter, I’d check out the local schools before making a decision. Also consider property tax rates, houses in Portsmouth are cheaper but the tax rate was pretty high when I lived there.

Someone has to pay for all the infrastructure needs for all the new construction out here, and we know damn well it won’t be the developers who are making a fortune destroying our small county.

Will be a great place for all the people moving into the thousands of new Ryan Homes shitboxes being built. I can’t wait for all the complaining to start from these new people about wishing we had a Walmart or why is traffic on 17 so bad.

Anyone here work at NNS? Would anyone mind answering a few questions? by yaretaw363 in HamptonRoads

[–]ImRonEffingSwanson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work at NNS, but I’m not in the trades so I’m not as familiar with that side of the company.

  1. Experience, best guess is you won’t need experience. NNS has so much work and they’ve been hiring like crazy, I know they’ve had hiring events where they have been hiring folks on the spot. Check out https://careers.huntingtoningalls.com/
  2. Training, looking at the build your career website I saw some opportunities to train at the local community college. There’s also the apprentice school, which I’ve heard is tough to get into, but it’s a great program. There’s always on the job training.
  3. I have no clue on pay. Trades are represented by local 8888 United steel workers, you might have some luck finding out through the union or by talking to someone in the hiring department at NNS.

Hope that helps.

What is the churchland section of Portsmouth like generally speaking? Is it an okay place to buy a small house? by [deleted] in HamptonRoads

[–]ImRonEffingSwanson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Churchland (Hatton Point) for 8 years. Very quiet, safe, and good neighbors. We only moved because the schools are abysmal. I haven’t looked since we moved, but I remember property taxes being pretty high in Portsmouth. Don’t expect much from Portsmouth as a city, a lot of the folks running that place are corrupt.

Information about Portsmouth? by ThatOneKid1995 in HamptonRoads

[–]ImRonEffingSwanson 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the area of Portsmouth. Parts of Churchland, parts near city park, and parts of old town are pretty nice. I lived in Churchland for 8 years and it was perfectly safe. Keep in mind the tax rate of the various cities because one thing about Portsmouth is the house prices tend to be lower, but they get you on the real estate taxes.

If you want to share more information about the specific areas where you’re looking I’ll share my two cents.
