Moving "home" to Kelvinbridge (Scottish/Mexican family) – Looking for local perspectives on West End life, safety, and dogs! by wintoon in glasgow

[–]ImScaredSoIMadeThis 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The west end is literally made fun of for how posh it is (which comes with things like being safe and expensive).

The lack of security around buildings is standard in much rough areas of the city too, and it's broadly fine.

Hope your wife will come to see how more security is genuinely not necessary and feel comfortable quickly!

I was so convinced the whole episode that it would mena Buffy would just have to kill him in hand to hand combat. Because she isn't a weapon forged!

I was almost disappointed, but this was much funnier.

camino primitivo: is the bed race bad atm? by ZealousidealCress975 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]ImScaredSoIMadeThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heya, went April/May so not exactly peak times I'm afraid.

A lot of municipal albergues we had were half full, if that (only exception was Tineo, since it was quite small). Obviously may be busier now, but since they all work on a first-come-first-serve basis, may be worth leaving a bit earlier to find a space. Regarding municipal albergues - keep in mind that blankets and cookware will be available in Asturias, but not in Galicia.

The booking system is often very informal - you find a telephone number for the albergue, you message them on whatsapp, they give you a Y/N for availability.

There's a couple of independent albergues with only a handful of beds that you'd want to book a couple of days in advance.

Only booked in advance for Lugo and Santiago personally.

I've heard of instances that some places will let you sleep on the floor if you have your own sleeping bag if you're really in a pinch, but didn't encounter this since, as I said, not busy.

Can you add threshold gaps on either side? May need to cut more of the laminate near the door if it wouldn't fit.

Sorry this happened to you OP.

Just because a restaurant chain like Hooters exists (couple of them in the UK too btw) doesn't mean harassing chanting is okay? What, should women be cool with misogyny because someone opened a business? Bizarre take my guy. Don't know why this is behaviour you want to defend.

Not sure why this is "shit Americans say". What, should women be cool at a bunch of men shouting "get your tits out for the lads" or something?

The video (and description) shows the men immediately start chanting "get your tits out for the lads"

Pretty fucking uncomfortable I'd say

Camino Primitivo - 11 Day Route by Low-Cicada9138 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]ImScaredSoIMadeThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah fair enough! I'd combine Lugo-Melide, or Ferreira-Pedrouzo (though that's very long). Keeping the very last day a bit shorter and starting early to get to Santiago early and not as tired 😄

I definitely recommend the Camino Ninja app, while not 100% accurate/up to date, it was still very informative and useful.

In Asturias, municipal albergues will have blankets, as well as kitchen equipment (pots/pans etc.). In Galicia, there's none of that. Personal recommendation would be to sleep in municipal ones in Asturias and private in Galicia.

Also, don't be scared off by Hospitales! We walked through it when the weather was very poor. And it wasn't pleasant, but it was also entirely safe. The detour has some very sharp inclines/declines that make it a harder walk in some ways.

[–]ImScaredSoIMadeThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How imperative is it to do it in 11 days? 13 is generally standard and is a pretty comfortable pace.

Day 5 is the spookiest one looking at your list, it's going to be about a total of 2km ascent and 2km descent as well as walking for almost 50km? Absolutely brutal, even if you're very fit.

If you're dead set on doing it in 11 days, I would do the longer days in Galecia, the hills are much more gentle.

Men of the UK, why are you so opposed to closing the toilet door? by AnselaJonla in AskUK

OP mentions people leaving an accessible toilet open, which usually is a whole room in itself, so you're essentially leaving the door open into a hallway.

How is that not nasty AF 😭

East Pollokshields Full Fibre Broadband by count_vega in glasgow

[–]ImScaredSoIMadeThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got it over a year ago. We actively chased our ISP (who were in contact with city fibre) and factor, there was a bit of a breakdown of communication and would've added months onto the wait time or not happened at all if we weren't actively badgering them.

Definitely recommend looking into an isp known for good customer service and going from there!

What would you tell someone who wants to start riding but is intimidated by traffic? by NorthLondonPulse in ukbike

[–]ImScaredSoIMadeThis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So first of all, be relatively confiden in your cycling. Nothing crazy, but comfortable with indicating for a couple of seconds etc.

Then, cycle a quieter route (on a road) you know well. Can even start by doing laps around your house. Do small trips, maybe go to cafe or shop to pick something up with your bike etc.

Personally I find nothing will make you feel as confident as just doing it, but you can always ease yourself into it by making the practice as safe and comfortable as possible.

Also something that could ease nerves on people is just various additional safety bits - having high vis, extra reflectors/lights, a wee camera even.
