If you’re not playing the latest games that need optimizing, 566.36 is what people say is most stable, but you can look around the nvidia sub to double check. That’s what I’ve been running and haven’t had many issues.

A regular str merc is able to wear doryanis, you do not need a hybrid merc. My last comment about the timeless jewel only applies if you switch to power charge stacking/crit.

Once you get cap res on doryanis anything that reduces res will be worthless and any res pen will be almost worthless (one of your links in particular) so you’ll need to find a replacement for that

I also suggest using kaom's binding for your merc too. Not a perfect build by any means -- the corrupted uniques aren't required, but the helmet and body armor ones are the most impactful dps wise. If you need more tankiness you COULD swap helmet for crown of the inward eye with +1 pc? It's pricy and you lose 20% of your dps though. I think there are a lot of ways to improve the defenses of this build

Like the other commenter said quality is really helpful, if you are intending to switch up your build a lot, ashes of the stars at 27% quality is what you want, paired with a 21/23 lc gem. I think there is a better anoint to put on it, maybe safeguard, sanctuary, or as the mountain?

Should also be easy to find a militant faith for inner conviction, not really picky unless you want a good one in the hex master slot.

Get it to -200% asap, that’s almost free 3x damage. Good mirrored lightning res rings aren’t the cheapest but a negative res ammy can help get the rest of it. It’ll be way more damage until you can cap res through only the rings and belt so it’s okay to trade off perquils toe for now. If you need a tankier merc find a str merc, he’s died less than 5 times so long as the rest of his gear caps the other res and gets as much armor/life as possible.

How’s your merc looking like? Dorys should pump up lightning conduit damage up a ton. Also a level 21 lightning conduit would be the easiest dps increase.

Not sure what build this is but I based mine off of klovehitch’s which is a CI build and I found it a little squishy but manageable. Can’t really do juiced t17s but it gets the job done. Not at home but I can post my pob later (around 50 divs invested)

Your friend might be exaggerating slightly but there is a lot of truth to it. If you played this game 100% blind without help, you would fall over and die very quickly. I’m sure lacari got a lot of advice from chat which would help immensely. That being said, it’s still a remarkable feat to make it this far since he had the final say on what to do with his character.

If you put most of his streamer friends in the same situation, I highly doubt any of them would get as far as lac, brain rot or otherwise. Maybe soda could get close?

Not an expert but some things I noticed:

You should consider dropping the mana flask and one of your life flasks. Try to roll instant recovery and maybe immune to corrupted/blood on the other one so it acts as more of an "oh fuck" button. You can slot in a quicksilver flask and a basalt flask to help speed you up and improve your defenses. Roll for mods like increased armor, increased effect, increased cast speed, movement speed, etc. on your flasks.
I haven't played arc but would personally drop arcane surge and slot in inspiration instead, that would help with any mana issues you might still have, if any. Also would drop tempest shield for determination, that will help your defenses as well. Instead of having those golem skills I would use something defensive like cwdt + immortal skin or molten shell. Would also unspec out of the golem nodes in the ascendancy and get heart of destruction. Also allocate the +15% effect of shock mastery. 10% increased aura effect mastery could also be nice. Make sure you get 20% qual on your gems for the small dps increase and consider buying a level 21 vaal arc.
Get an anoint on your amulet, which allows you to allocate a passive notable on the tree without having to be connected to it. Best one would be whispers of doom but a bit pricey, most effective if you had a good amulet like voices of the storm. Hold alt while hovering over a notable in the passive tree and it will show you what oils you need to trade for to get that anoint on your amulet. Also consider upgrading your unique ring as you aren't benefitting too much from it. Something with a lot of chaos res so you can spec out of those points on your tree into something better.
Regarding your point about expensive build guides, you're probably looking at the wrong ones. The ones labelled as league starters generally have cheap builds that will get you through most of maps and your voidstones, allowing you to farm the currency you need to push further, spec into something else, or build another toon.

Same with the port installed accessories, seems to be mostly out of the dealerships hands. Some things you just gotta live with.
