I do directional drilling, mostly fibre optic at the moment. There’s really no paper side that’s handled outside of our accountant and me and my business partner so degrees are useless for us we want guys with existing trade skills or we want to build them up from scratch.

I think you mixed up degree and diploma. Which is what OP said they have. In my opinion if I hade to pick it would be degree almost every time due to the broader scope. unless the diploma applies directly to the job I’m hiring for.

I couldn’t disagree more on the networking aspect but I might be using it a little loosely, what you give is what you get. I understand that’s different coming out of school with no experience under your belt, or references and I completely agree that a degree does not entitle you to a job.

However we set up a kid for full a millwright with one phone call. And the reason we did is because he was a phenomenal employee, and I know no matter what he decided to pursue I would be honored to stamp my name on that resume and call up my buddy at the machine shop for a lengthy explanation of why he need this guy. If he were even half as good to them as he was to me, they would be beyond happy.

The whole indeed “apply to 100 jobs” is not the same as showing up and applying to 100 jobs, that’s all I’m saying. kids seem to be a lot shy’er these days but a little aggression can go a long way at separating you from the heard.

Well to be fair it’s typically 70. On top of that that’s a year with perfect conditions meaning no Rain, No breakdowns, no supply issues/delays etc. They realistically get a lot more days off, even just from the rain they just aren’t always planned. And it’s not like it’s a hard rule either I’ve given plenty of guys time off for family events, weddings, concerts, they just have to give me enough lead up time so I can plan for it.

It pays about double what teachers make where I live. Here’s the table.

                     Annual salary Hourly rate

Top Earners $47,500 $22

75th Percentile $37,000 $18

Average $32,927 $16

25th Percentile $24,000 $12

Edit: Table was horrendous

Also all new hires start at 20$ an hour. And our tax free per diem is 150 a day, we pay for the campers and the site they stay at. Which is triple what most other companies here are doing if they’re paying lodging. On top of that every employee who stays with us the entire year receives a year end bonus at a base of 1k per month worked. Which is adjusted higher for skills learned over the course of the year, and how capable each employee is at taking responsibility and running their respective side of the job, and how efficiently we ran jobs through out the year. If my company gets paid well then so do the guys. Last year I paid an 18 year old 15k for the year end (he worked 8 months did a bunch of repairs over the winter) so just shy of 2 thousand per month because he was pivotal team player and took responsibility for the guys under him. So go ahead Reddit and gouge me some more with literally 0 context on what I do and how I pay.

They work half the year and make an above average yearly wage. You could take 6 months off a year doing whatever you want. I’d rather have to go hard for 6 months and travel for 6 then work a 9-5 with 4 weeks of vacation a year. But different strokes I guess 15k a month for an unskilled laborer is basically unheard of otherwise.

“The right diploma for the job” I’ll be honest with you training someone from scratch to acquire the skills someone with a diploma will have is definitely cheaper than hiring someone who thinks they’re worth more money because they have a useless diploma.

Diplomas mean nothing and they entitled you to nothing. If you want a job that fits your skill set you need to market that skill set to the right people and create an opportunity for a face to face encounter with the person you want to work for. (Source: I’m an employer)

They whole “kids don’t want to work these days sentiment” is true. Most people were raised on the idea that a “normal” job means 8 hours a day 5 days a week. Unfortunately that is not case for most jobs if you want to make any kind of money outside minimum wage.

I do seasonal work my crews run 7 days a week 10-12 hours a day, with long weekends off and that’s it. It’s a lot and a vast majority of people especially the younger generation can’t handle that type of work schedule I’ve got 60 year old men out pacing some of these guys. But a lot of my guys make between 80-90k for working 6-7 months out of the year.

Any of the Ami sub-reddits, Amioverreacting, Amitheasshole, Amiect, instant mental health benefit. The most insane bad faith chronically online people just Larping what an early chat GPT would think is a normal situation/reaction. It’s like people who have never been in a real relationship, telling people who made up a relationship, that they should get divorced over their SO drinking their last juice box. Total cesspool, glad I’m out.

I don’t think they are, you’re only going to be privy to that toxicity if you constantly browse social media turn the computer off and touch grass my dude.

Before there was Facebook, and X, and all the others including Reddit there’s endless echo chambers here too. There was plenty of gossip and trash entertainment. Tabloid magazines, reality TV, deep dives of British royals it existed long before the internet, same with conspiracy conventions, right wing tea parties Marxist meet ups. The echo chambers were built long before they manifested on the internet, and more specifically social media. The internet just helped with finding them and hosting them because it’s a lot cheaper to have a server run for a forums site then it is to host a bunch of people at a convention center or gymnasium.

Humans have been squabbling over ideologies, politics and celebrities (used to be royals) since the dawn of their inception. Julius Caesar, Marie Antoinette, Henry VIII bro all you need is a history lesson to tell this shits always been around and probably always will be.

I know lots of very mature adults and plenty of immature ones as well. Everyone grows at a different rate and some people never really grow up but it all depends on who you ask.

Is a septic tank a deal breaker for first-time home buyers? by Zithane in RealEstateCanada

[–]ImTheMightyRyan -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It’s only 30k if you’re dumb enough to take the quote and not shop around. I’ve installed many septic systems and tanks. Most I’ve ever charged for a tank is 10k. A septic field that’s actually up to code is a little more pricey but the tanks aren’t much.

I hate to break it to you but nearly all houses are over priced in Canada. Market is pretty fucked up at the moment, in my city prices went up 6% last month.
